XRP circulating supply is an estimate of the XRP currently available in the market under a particular data provider’s rules. Total supply is the XRP that has been issued and still exists after destroyed units are removed. They are not interchangeable: escrowed XRP is generally excluded from circulation, while it remains part of the issued supply, and tiny amounts are permanently destroyed as transaction fees.
XRP began with 100 billion units. That is an initial-issuance figure, not a promise that today’s total supply is exactly 100 billion or that every unit is circulating. Whenever you quote a supply number, identify the measure, provider and date.

The four XRP supply terms you need to separate
Supply discussions become confusing because several labels describe different stages of the same asset. The most useful distinction is whether a number describes historical issuance, all surviving units, or units considered available to the market.

| Initial supply | The amount created when the XRP Ledger launched. | XRPL.org documents 100 billion XRP created at launch. This is a historical issuance figure, not necessarily the current balance. |
| Total supply | Issued units that still exist after any permanent destruction. | Transaction fees are burned, so the surviving amount can be slightly below the original 100 billion. |
| Circulating supply | A provider’s estimate of units available for general market circulation. | Methodologies commonly remove locked, restricted or otherwise uncirculated wallets. CoinGecko explicitly excludes escrowed XRP. |
| Maximum supply | A cap concept describing how many units could exist under a protocol’s issuance rules. | For XRP, describe 100 billion as the fixed initial issuance. Do not automatically use maximum supply as a synonym for today’s total supply. |

Initial supply is not a live balance
The 100 billion XRP created at launch tells you how much the ledger issued initially. It does not tell you how much is circulating today, how much is held by a company, or how much remains locked in escrow. Treat it as the starting point in XRP’s supply history.
Total supply falls when fees are destroyed
Every XRP Ledger transaction destroys a small amount of XRP as a network fee. Those units cannot return to circulation. Consequently, the total number of surviving XRP can differ slightly from 100 billion even though no new XRP is mined. The difference is normally small, but it matters when a source presents a highly precise total-supply figure.
Circulating supply depends on classification
Circulating supply is not a field with one universally enforced definition. CoinGecko states the formula as Circulating Supply = Total Supply − Uncirculated Wallets and says escrowed funds are excluded. Another provider may classify company wallets, exchange reserves, dormant addresses or restricted accounts differently. A circulating number therefore needs its provider’s name and methodology alongside it.

1. They may be measuring different things
One page may show circulating supply, another total supply, and a third the original or maximum amount. A number near 100 billion can be an issuance reference, while a smaller number may remove escrow or other wallets. Read the label, not just the digits.
2. The timestamps may not match
Some vendors update estimates continuously as wallets move and fees are burned. Ripple’s own disclosure is a quarter-end snapshot, reported on the last day of the quarter. A live vendor estimate and a dated corporate disclosure are not interchangeable observations.
3. Wallet treatment differs
Providers must decide which addresses are uncirculated. They may remove escrow, company-controlled holdings, vesting or restricted balances, but their address labels and rules are not guaranteed to match. Exchange wallets can be especially difficult: coins may be available for customers to trade even though the provider records them under an exchange-controlled address.
4. Escrow may be handled differently
CoinGecko’s stated methodology excludes XRP that is in escrow. A source that does not make the same adjustment can report a higher circulating figure. Always look for an explicit escrow rule before treating two numbers as comparable. CoinGecko publishes its methodology at support.coingecko.com/hc/en-us/articles/32294647667865-CoinGecko-Supply-Methodology.

How XRP escrow changes availability without creating new XRP
Escrow is a ledger mechanism that locks already-issued XRP under conditions and release times. Moving XRP into escrow does not mint additional units; releasing it does not increase the original issuance. The change is in when the units are available and how a data provider classifies them.
The 2017 escrow arrangement
In December 2017, Ripple said it placed 55 billion XRP into on-ledger escrows to make the amount that could enter circulation more predictable. The arrangement used scheduled releases, with unused XRP eligible to be placed into new escrow. David Schwartz, then Ripple’s chief technology officer, wrote: “To provide additional predictability to the XRP supply, Ripple has locked 55 billion XRP (55% of the total possible supply) into a series of escrows.” The dated explanation is at ripple.com/insights/explanation-ripples-xrp-escrow/.
The 55 billion figure describes the original 2017 arrangement. It should not be presented as the current escrow balance. Current balances change as releases occur and unused XRP is re-escrowed.

Escrowed units remain recorded on the XRP Ledger, but their release conditions prevent ordinary market use until those conditions are met. CoinGecko therefore removes escrowed funds from its circulating-supply calculation. Once XRP is released, a provider may classify it as circulating, uncirculated or otherwise restricted depending on who controls it and the provider’s rules.

Ripple’s June 30, 2026 disclosure
Ripple’s XRP page reports holdings at the end of each quarter and separates XRP in Ripple’s wallets from XRP subject to on-ledger escrow. Its figures dated June 30, 2026 are:
| Ripple-reported category | Amount | What the figure is |
|---|---|---|
| Held by Ripple | 37,656,053,914 XRP | Ripple’s reported holdings at the quarter-end snapshot. |
| Distributed | 62,329,587,596 XRP | Ripple’s reported amount distributed outside its held category. |
| Placed in escrow | 32,600,000,000 XRP | XRP subject to on-ledger escrow in that snapshot. |
These are Ripple’s reporting categories, not a standalone real-time circulating-supply estimate. Do not add or subtract them casually. Category definitions can overlap with a market-data provider’s wallet classifications, and Ripple’s disclosure uses a dated corporate methodology while vendors may publish a live estimate. - Record the provider. A figure from CoinGecko, an exchange, Ripple or another data service may use a different wallet list and formula.
- Check the timestamp. Note whether it is live, last updated at a specific time, or a quarter-end disclosure such as June 30, 2026.
- Read the escrow rule. Confirm whether escrowed XRP is removed from circulation and how released XRP is treated.
- Check fee burning. Total supply should account for XRP destroyed by transaction fees; the original 100 billion does not.
- Compare like with like. Use the same provider, date and definition when tracking a change or comparing market-cap figures.
If a page gives a precise number without naming its methodology or date, treat it as incomplete rather than as a universal fact.

Why circulating supply matters for market capitalization
Market capitalization is generally calculated as price multiplied by a chosen supply measure. The result depends on that denominator. A provider using circulating supply can produce a different market cap from a site using total supply, even when both use the same XRP price.
For a meaningful comparison, state the complete calculation: the price timestamp, the supply figure, the provider and whether escrow or other uncirculated wallets were excluded. Avoid presenting a market-cap ranking as objective if the underlying sites use different supply bases.
Supply terminology does not predict XRP’s price. It describes how many units a source considers available or surviving at a particular time. Price, liquidity and market behavior require separate analysis and are outside the meaning of the supply labels themselves.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
| Mistake | Why it is wrong | Better wording |
|---|---|---|
| Calling 100 billion the current circulating supply. | 100 billion is the documented initial issuance, while escrow and other uncirculated balances may be excluded and fees have burned units. | “XRP was initially created with 100 billion units; the current circulating figure depends on the provider and date.” |
| Adding Ripple’s held, distributed and escrow figures to derive circulation. | They are dated Ripple categories whose definitions may not match a vendor’s wallet methodology. | Quote each category with its June 30, 2026 date and do not infer a vendor’s circulation total. |
| Assuming escrow is newly issued XRP. | Escrow locks existing XRP; release changes availability, not the original issuance. | Describe escrow as a restriction on already-issued units. |
| Comparing a live estimate with a quarter-end snapshot. | The observations cover different times and may change as fees burn or escrow moves. | Align dates or clearly label the figures as different snapshots. |
| Using maximum supply as a synonym for total supply. | A cap or initial-issuance concept does not account for units already destroyed or currently locked. | Use total supply for surviving issued units and initial supply for the launch figure. |
A precise way to explain XRP supply in one paragraph
A careful explanation can say: XRP’s ledger initially created 100 billion units. Total supply means the units still existing after transaction-fee burns. Circulating supply is a provider’s estimate of what is available to the market, often excluding escrow and other uncirculated wallets. Because providers classify wallets differently and publish figures at different times, every quoted number should include its source, methodology and date.
