It is a dated classification of units that a data provider counts as circulating. Exchange liquidity is the quantity and pricing that a particular venue, trading pair and execution route can provide at a particular moment. To estimate how much XRP you can buy without materially moving the price, examine spread, cumulative depth and modeled slippage for your exact order—not market capitalization or a supply headline.
Supply and liquidity answer different questions
When a buyer asks how much XRP is actually available, two measurements are often mixed together. Circulating supply asks, “How many units are classified as circulating under a stated methodology and date?” Liquidity asks, “How much can this order execute, at what prices, on this venue and route, right now?” Those answers can differ by orders of magnitude.

What circulating supply means
A circulating-supply figure is a classification. A provider applies its own rules to decide which XRP units count as circulating, which categories are excluded and when the figure was observed. The result is useful for describing the supply base used in calculations such as market capitalization, but it is not an inventory of sell orders.

What exchange liquidity means
Liquidity is venue-, pair-, size- and time-specific. An XRP/fiat order book, an XRP/stablecoin order book and an XRP/crypto order book are different markets. Each has its own bids, asks, spread and depth. A centralized exchange may show one set of offers, while the XRP Ledger’s decentralized exchange and automated market-maker pools show other execution opportunities.
Liquidity is also dynamic. Orders can be filled, canceled or repriced before your transaction completes. A displayed quantity is therefore an observation, not a promise that the same quantity will still be available when your order reaches the matching engine or ledger.
Why market capitalization is not executable inventory
Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying a price by a circulating-supply figure. It describes a valuation convention. It does not tell you how many XRP can be bought at that price, how much sits on a particular venue, or how far the price will move when you submit an order. Treating market capitalization as a measure of executable inventory confuses a supply classification with a market microstructure measurement.

Compare the same trade, not headline metrics

How to measure liquidity for a planned XRP purchase
Use a repeatable snapshot tied to the trade you intend to make. The following procedure avoids the most common comparison errors.

- Define the order. Write down the amount of quote currency you will spend or the number of XRP you want, and whether the order is a marketable order, a limit order or a route through an AMM.
- Choose one exact market. Record the venue, XRP pair and quote currency. Do not combine an XRP/US-dollar book with an XRP/stablecoin book without explaining the conversion and its costs.
- Timestamp the snapshot. Save the date and time, time zone and whether the data was captured before or after a major price movement. Liquidity comparisons without timestamps are not reproducible.
- Capture the top of book. Record the highest bid, lowest ask and the absolute and percentage spread. State whether the reference price is the midpoint, best ask or another benchmark.
- Calculate cumulative depth. Add the quantities and quote values available at progressively wider price bands, such as within 0.1%, 0.5% and 1% of the reference. Perform the calculation separately for asks, which matter to a buyer, and bids, which matter to a seller.
- Model your execution. Walk your intended buy through the ask levels, consuming each level until the order is complete. Divide total quote spent by XRP received to obtain a modeled average execution price, then compare it with the reference price to estimate slippage.
- Keep route assumptions visible. If a venue can combine books, use an intermediary asset or draw from a pool, identify that route and include every fee, conversion and transfer assumption.
- Recheck immediately before submitting. Orders may disappear or be partially filled. A fresh snapshot reduces, but does not eliminate, the gap between the model and the actual fill.
Spread is only the first cost
The spread is the difference between the best ask and best bid. A narrow spread can make a market look liquid at the first few units while offering little quantity behind that quote. Conversely, a wider spread can coexist with substantial depth farther from the midpoint. Always report spread together with depth and order-size slippage.
Depth should be expressed for a price band
“There is $X of liquidity” is incomplete unless the price tolerance is specified. Depth within 0.1% of the midpoint answers a different question from depth within 2%. For a buyer, sum the asks that fall inside each band and show both XRP quantity and quote-currency value. A book may have plenty of total offers but very little that is close enough to your acceptable price.
Slippage is order-specific
For a buy, modeled slippage can be expressed as:
(modeled average execution price − reference price) ÷ reference price × 100
The result depends on order size, the chosen reference and the exact snapshot. It is not a firm quote. A partially filled order, a canceled level or a competing order can produce a different result.

Why volume does not prove depth
Reported volume summarizes trades during a period. It can show that a market was active, but it does not show how many asks are available now or how much of your order can execute near the current quote. High volume can be concentrated in short bursts, in a different pair, or in derivatives rather than spot XRP.
Use volume as context, not as a substitute for an order-book snapshot. A valid comparison keeps spot and derivatives separate, identifies the pair and quote currency, and reports the timestamp and venue coverage. Visible orders can also be canceled, so even a detailed depth calculation is an estimate of conditions at the time it was made.
How XRP Ledger trading differs from a centralized order book
Offers on the XRP Ledger DEX
The XRP Ledger decentralized exchange represents a trade with an Offer that specifies amounts and rates. Matching starts with the best available rate. An Offer can be partially filled; any unfilled remainder may remain on the book. As transactions consume or cancel Offers, the book changes.

The ledger closes approximately every 3–5 seconds. The official DEX documentation cautions that transactions affecting the same book in one ledger can make final results differ from tentative estimates. The ledger does not natively represent market orders, stop orders or leverage. A buyer therefore needs to understand the limit-style Offer mechanics and the timing of ledger confirmation rather than assuming a centralized-exchange market-order model.

XRPL documentation states: “Because trades are only executed each time a new ledger closes (approximately every 3-5 seconds), the XRP Ledger is not suitable for high-frequency trading.” This is a protocol timing limitation, not a statement about the quality of any particular XRP market.
AMM pools are a different liquidity source
XRP Ledger automated market makers are integrated with the order-book DEX. The protocol can determine whether a payment or Offer should use pool liquidity, order-book Offers or a combination. A pool’s asset balances change with every trade, so its quoted rate changes as the pool becomes more or less balanced.
Larger overall reserves generally reduce the rate change caused by a given trade, but pool size alone is not enough for a comparison. Include the two asset balances, the pool’s trading fee, the proposed order size and the estimated price impact. The fee is an additional cost, and a trade that materially changes the reserve ratio can have much more impact than a small trade against the same pool.

XRPL auto-bridging can combine direct Offers with Offers that route through XRP when the intermediary route produces a better rate. The official example shows why the best displayed rate is not sufficient: a bridged Offer can have a thin quantity while a direct Offer has fuller depth. Compare the rate and available quantity across the entire proposed order, not just the first quote.
Order-book Offers, AMM pools and auto-bridged paths are not interchangeable with a centralized exchange’s order book. Present the route explicitly so a reader can tell whether the estimate is based on direct XRP liquidity, a pool, an intermediary conversion or a combination.

For a small purchase
Check the best ask, spread and the cumulative ask quantity at your maximum acceptable price. If the order is comfortably smaller than the displayed quantity near the ask, the modeled slippage may be modest, but still confirm the quote immediately before execution. “Small” is relative to the chosen pair; an amount that is insignificant on one venue can be material on another.
For a medium purchase
Walk the order through several ask levels and calculate the weighted average execution price. Compare at least two venues or routes using the same quote currency, order size and timestamp as closely as practical. Include trading fees, conversion costs and any transfer delay that could make the snapshot stale.
For a large purchase
Do not rely on the best ask or a single venue’s headline volume. Break the analysis into price bands, examine the full ask-side depth and model alternative routes. A limit order can cap the worst acceptable price, but it may fill only partially. Splitting an order can reduce visible market impact, yet it also exposes you to price changes between executions. Treat every modeled route as conditional until the fills are confirmed.
What can and cannot be said about current XRP supply
A 2025 SEC-filed exchange document provides historical context about XRP trading, supply and the relationship between market price, supply and demand on exchanges and in private transactions. It is not a current October 2026 circulating-supply estimate. No authoritative, consistently defined live supply figure or venue-level liquidity snapshot is established here, so this article does not present a current numeric supply or liquidity claim.
When publishing or using a live number, attach the provider’s methodology and timestamp to the figure. For liquidity, query each compared venue and pair contemporaneously and retain the order size, quote currency, route and timestamp. Without those qualifiers, a precise-looking number can be less informative than a clearly labeled estimate.

Buyer’s checklist
- Have I defined the XRP amount or quote-currency budget?
- Did I record the exact venue, pair and quote currency?
- Is the snapshot timestamped and clearly identified as spot rather than derivatives?
- What are the best bid, best ask and percentage spread?
- How much ask-side quantity exists within my acceptable price bands?
- What is the modeled average execution price for my full order?
- Have I included trading, pool, conversion and transfer fees?
- If the route uses XRPL, did I identify Offers, AMM liquidity or auto-bridging?
- Have I allowed for partial fills, cancellations and ledger timing?
- Am I distinguishing an estimate from a firm executable quote?
The useful answer to “How much XRP can I buy?” is therefore conditional: it is the amount your chosen route can execute for your specified order size, price tolerance and timestamp. Circulating supply provides broad supply context; liquidity analysis tells you what your trade can realistically reach.
