X-ray fluorescence (XRF) mapping gave conservation scientists a new view of a badly degraded Roman wall painting from Herculaneum. The maps separated surviving colour-bearing layers and exposed an underlying sketch that was difficult to see in the remaining visible image. Reports from 2017 establish that discovery, but they do not establish a complete pigment list, a restoration, or a finished reconstruction of the woman’s original appearance.
What the elemental maps revealed
The subject is a wall painting of a woman from Herculaneum, described in a 21 August 2017 Chemistry World report as roughly 2,000 years old. Time and deterioration had obscured much of the image when viewed in ordinary light. Conservation scientists used X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to create maps showing where different chemical elements were concentrated. Those maps made two features visible that were not readily apparent on the degraded surface: separate colour layers and a sketch beneath them. The result is not a digitally invented portrait; it is a chemical map of material that remains in or below the paint.

The report’s central point is therefore about evidence hidden in the object, not about a completed restoration. XRF showed that the surviving paint is layered and that the artist had drawn an underlying guide before or during the painting process. It did not, in the sources available for this account, identify every pigment, reproduce the woman’s original colours, or document a treatment that returned the wall painting to its former appearance.

Why a chemical map can show what eyes miss
Visible light records the damaged surface
A normal photograph or direct inspection primarily records light reflected from the exposed surface. Abrasion, deposits, fading and later changes can make adjacent colours look similar or hide thin traces of paint. A faint line under a darkened layer may be practically invisible even though some of the original material is still present.
XRF records elements, not just brightness
In XRF spectroscopy, an instrument irradiates a tiny area with X-rays. Atoms in that material respond by emitting fluorescent X-rays with energies characteristic of particular elements. By measuring those energies and repeating the measurement across a grid, a scanner can assign an intensity value to each position. Plotting the values as an image produces an elemental map: bright areas indicate relatively stronger detection of a selected element, while dark areas indicate weaker detection under the same measurement conditions.
That extra dimension can separate regions that have similar visible colour but different chemistry. It can also reveal a line or patch that is covered by a thin, weathered layer when the underlying material still contributes a detectable signal. The Herculaneum report attributes the newly visible colour layers and underdrawing to this kind of elemental mapping.

Why the image is a map rather than a photograph
An elemental map is not a conventional colour photograph. Each map is tied to one detected element or to a defined combination of signals. Researchers compare maps with the visible painting and with one another to work out where layers or marks occur. The visualisation can use arbitrary display colours to make patterns easy to see; those display colours do not mean that the painted object literally looked that way.
What “portable macro-XRF” adds
The 2017 programme for the American Chemical Society’s 254th National Meeting and Exposition lists a presentation titled “Portrait of an ancient woman revealed by high resolution portable macro-XRF scanning.” The programme names E. Del Federico, C. Kehlet, N. Barbi, M. Gironda and R. Alberti as presenters. The listing supports the conclusion that a closely related project used high-resolution, portable macro-XRF on an ancient woman’s portrait.
Portable macro-XRF generally refers to an instrument designed to scan areas larger than a microscope’s point analysis while remaining deployable near an artwork. That is valuable for heritage objects that cannot be cut, sampled or moved easily. The ACS listing, however, does not provide the scan settings, map dimensions, detected elements or results for the specific Herculaneum image. It should be treated as corroboration of the approach and subject area, not as proof that it is the identical paper behind the news report. The programme is available as a PDF from the American Chemical Society’s 2017 meeting programme.

What is established—and what is not
| Question | Supported answer | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| What object was examined? | A Roman wall painting depicting a woman at Herculaneum, described as about 2,000 years old. | The age is a description in the 2017 report, not the result of a newly reported statistical dating study. |
| What method was reported? | X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy used to produce elemental maps. | The available account does not state the instrument model, beam conditions, scan spacing, or acquisition time. |
| What became visible? | Different colour layers and an underlying sketch that were not readily apparent in the degraded visible painting. | The reports do not publish a complete element-by-element interpretation in the material available here. |
| Were individual pigments confirmed? | Not stated. | An element can occur in more than one pigment or material, so a map alone is not a unique pigment label. |
| Was the portrait restored? | Not established. | Nothing in the cited accounts documents treatment, reconstruction or a final conservation outcome. |
| Is there a named quotation or numerical study result? | Not available in the cited text. | No verified verbatim statement or independently reported statistic should be attributed to a researcher. |
Why an element does not equal a pigment
It is tempting to look at a bright map and name the paint immediately. That shortcut is unsafe. A single element may be present in several historically used pigments, in a ground or preparation layer, in a contaminant, or in more than one mixture. Conversely, one pigment can contain several elements whose signals overlap. The measured signal can also include material below the visible paint because X-rays interact with a finite depth rather than stopping at the first surface molecule.
Layered paintings make interpretation harder still. A strong signal may come from an underlayer, while a weaker signal from the top coat changes how the combination appears. Researchers normally compare the spatial pattern of several elements, the visible image, reference materials and, where permitted, microscopic or laboratory analyses before assigning a pigment. None of the two cited 2017 sources supplies that complete chain of evidence for the Herculaneum portrait. The responsible conclusion is that XRF exposed chemically distinct layers and an underdrawing, not that it definitively named every colour.
How an XRF mapping examination works
The following sequence explains the logic of a portable macro-XRF examination. It describes the method readers need to understand; the retrieved reports do not publish every operational detail for this particular wall painting.

- Document the condition. Conservators photograph and record the visible surface, cracks, losses and areas where the instrument can be positioned safely. This baseline lets them distinguish a newly detected pattern from an existing visual feature.
- Choose a scan area. The team defines a region large enough to include the portrait and relevant surrounding paint. A portable head can be positioned close to the wall without removing a sample.
- Excite the material. The instrument directs X-rays at one point or a small footprint. Atoms in the paint emit characteristic fluorescent X-rays in response.
- Measure the spectrum. A detector records the energies and intensities of the emitted X-rays. Peaks indicate the presence of elements that the detector can resolve under those conditions.
- Raster-scan the surface. The instrument moves through a grid, collecting a spectrum at each position. The exact spacing and dwell time determine the balance between spatial detail, signal strength and total examination time; those values were not stated for this portrait.
- Build separate maps. Software assigns the intensity of a selected elemental signal to each grid position. The output is a set of maps that can be compared with the colour photograph and with one another.
- Interpret patterns conservatively. Continuous bands may indicate a layer, while a narrow line can be consistent with an underdrawing. Analysts must account for signal overlap, penetration depth, surface contamination and the possibility that one element has several sources.
This workflow explains why the method can reveal information without requiring a chip of paint. It also explains why the map is evidence for material distribution rather than a complete reconstruction of the artist’s palette.

An underdrawing is evidence of planning. A surviving line beneath later paint can show that the artist established a contour or composition before applying visible colour. In a damaged portrait, that line may preserve information about the intended placement of facial features, hair or clothing even when the upper layer has deteriorated. The report does not identify the sketch’s exact subject matter, medium or drawing instrument, so those details should not be inferred from the map alone.

The layered signal also changes how the painting is read. What appears to be a single surviving patch may represent several applications made at different stages. Chemical separation can therefore help distinguish original paint from an overlying or underlying region, provided the interpretation is checked against the object’s condition and other observations. The finding offers a way to study technique while leaving the physical surface untouched.

Conservation value without claiming a restoration
For conservators, knowing where material survives can guide future examination. A map can identify areas worth documenting at higher resolution, help avoid unnecessary sampling and show whether a visually uniform dark region contains distinct remnants. It can also provide a permanent record of chemical distribution against which later condition changes might be compared.
Those benefits are different from treatment. The cited reports do not say that the Herculaneum portrait was cleaned, stabilised, repainted or digitally reconstructed after scanning. Nor do they report a final conservation decision. XRF can inform such decisions, but the instrument itself does not repair a wall painting or prove what the entire original image looked like.
How to read future claims about the portrait
- Look for the exact object designation and location, rather than assuming every ancient woman’s portrait is the same Herculaneum painting.
- Check whether a statement comes from the 21 August 2017 news report, the ACS programme listing, or a later primary study with its own data.
- Separate “element detected” from “pigment identified.” A pigment assignment should explain the supporting chemistry and any complementary analysis.
- Ask whether a displayed colour is a real photographic colour or an artificial colour chosen to visualise map intensity.
- Distinguish evidence of an underdrawing from a complete reconstruction of the artist’s design.
- Treat claims about cleaning, restoration or the final appearance as unverified unless a conservation report documents them.
What remains unknown
The two cited sources establish the broad discovery but leave important technical questions unanswered. They do not give the exact instrument configuration, beam energy, detector, scan resolution, examined area, calibration procedure or data-processing method. They do not provide a full list of detected elements, statistical uncertainties or a map set that would allow an independent reader to reproduce the interpretation.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThey also do not establish which historical pigments produced each signal, how deep the underdrawing lies, whether later interventions contributed to any map, what conservation treatment followed, or whether a complete visual reconstruction was attempted. Those are not minor omissions: each would change how confidently a reader could connect a chemical pattern to a specific paint recipe or historical appearance.
The significance of the 2017 finding
The important result is methodological as much as visual. A portrait that appears severely degraded can retain a record of its making in layers below the surface. By combining non-contact XRF measurements with spatial mapping, scientists recovered evidence of colour organisation and an underdrawing that ordinary viewing did not readily reveal. The discovery demonstrates how conservation science can add historical information without treating a speculative reconstruction as fact.
For this Herculaneum woman’s portrait, the defensible conclusion is precise: elemental maps exposed hidden structure in the surviving material. They opened a route to better questions about how the painting was planned and built, while the exact pigments, treatment history and original appearance remain matters for further documented analysis.
