Their key difference is how you see the room: AURA uses optical see-through lenses, while Meta uses camera passthrough. That distinction can affect how directly you perceive your surroundings, but it does not establish that either device is safe to wear while walking. Both products are announced or reservation-stage hardware, not independently reviewed final retail devices.
At a glance: what is actually similar?
Both products move much of the computing away from the face and into a separate puck connected to the glasses. Their published glasses-only weights are close, and Meta’s announced US price is near AURA’s lower listed configuration. The puck’s weight is not included in the glasses figures below.

Optical see-through versus camera passthrough
AURA keeps the physical scene in direct view
With optical see-through, the lenses let light from the actual environment reach your eyes while digital content is added to the view. XREAL says this means the physical world stays directly visible rather than being shown through a camera feed.
Meta shows a camera view of the environment
Meta describes full-color passthrough: cameras capture the surroundings and the system presents that view in the glasses. This is a different visual pathway from looking directly through an optical lens, even when the passthrough image is in color.

- XREAL's Self-Developed X1 Spatial Computing Chip: Delivers Native 3DoF tracking with ultra-low 3ms M2P latency, ensuring stable visuals even during rapid movements. With the optional XREAL Eye, full 6DoF spatial anchoring. It delivers high processing power, seamless compatibility with devices, and distortion-free visuals through advanced stabilization.
- The New Optic Engine-X-Prism Optics: XREAL’s advanced lens and projection system—ultra-slim, precision-engineered optics that project a large, sharp virtual screen right in front of your eyes, while still letting you see your real surroundings clearly. With a best-in-class 57° FOV, Optic Engine 4.0 recreates the feeling of watching a massive 171-inch screen from four meters away—all in lightweight, compact design. Its advanced anti-glare design minimizes reflections and light interference, enhancing clarity and immersion.
- Experience True AR with 6 DoF, Spatial Anchor Anytime: Pairing with XREAL Eye, anchor your screen anywhere in your room, so it stays perfectly fixed in place—even as you walk around, lean in, or change your position. Unlike 3DoF, which keeps the screen at a constant distance relative to your head movements, 6DoF keeps your virtual screen locked to a real spot in your space for true spatial freedom and a more natural, immersive AR experience.
- REAL 3D – Turn everything you watch into an immersive 3D experience: REAL 3D Now Available on All One Series Glasses, instantly transforming all your content—from games and movies to apps and photos—into true 3D with a single switch. Experience richer depth and lifelike visuals across everything you watch or play.
- 57°FOV, 171'' Spatial Screen – More Immersive Visual Experience: Experience a virtual screen starting at 171 inches wide, filling your view with blockbuster visuals, thanks to XREAL’s advanced optics and industry-leading 57° FOV. Powered by Sony’s 0.55' Micro-OLED display technology and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, get swept into your games or movies with immersion that rivals traditional home theaters—without the size, setup, or space concerns.
The distinction matters for awareness, but it is not a safety verdict. Neither cited product information establishes that the glasses are safe for walking, cycling, driving, or other activities where attention to the environment is essential. Direct visibility should not be treated as a guarantee against distraction or missed hazards.
How the puck changes the design
Putting compute in a separate puck helps keep the face-worn units relatively light, but it means the glasses are tethered rather than fully self-contained. Meta says its puck also carries the battery and storage and connects via an optical tether. Meta claims up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback from the puck; that is a vendor claim, not an independent battery test. The available XREAL product details identify a dedicated compute puck but do not establish a directly comparable total system weight or battery-runtime figure.

- YOUR PRIVATE 147” BIG SCREEN, ANYWHERE — Plug the a01+ into your phone, tablet, handheld, or laptop and a giant 147” screen appears in front of you—for movies, gaming, or getting work done on the couch, on a flight, or in bed. A true portable display you wear, in a soda-can-sized 210g case that drops in your pocket.
- ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU — The screen follows your view with smooth, stabilized tracking and stays centered as you look around—nothing to anchor or set up, and no drift to reset. Press play and your big screen is simply there.
- 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.
- LOOKS LIKE SUNGLASSES, NOT A GADGET — A slim, sunglasses-style frame with a signature semi-transparent chassis and neon logo—light and low-profile enough to actually wear out.
- WORKS WITH YOUR USB-C GEAR — No Battery to Charge — Connects and powers over a single USB-C DisplayPort cable: iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, DP-capable Android phones, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Mac and PC. Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.
Software, controls, and what hands-on reports show
XREAL positions AURA around Android XR and Gemini. Meta presents its glasses around Meta OS, Meta AI, and a VR-oriented content and workspace ecosystem. Those descriptions indicate different platform strategies, but they do not establish long-term app quality, library breadth, or ongoing support.

Price and timing: close at the entry point, not identical
Meta’s announced US price of $1,299.99 is close to AURA’s $1,279 entry configuration, but AURA’s other currently listed configuration is $1,499. XREAL’s product page is framed around reservations, while Meta announced Spring 2027 sales. These are not equivalent availability states, and the published figures do not prove final retail pricing or shipment status.
Prescription support
XREAL lists prescription inserts on its product page. Axios reported magnetic prescription inserts on the Meta prototype. That does not establish third-party compatibility or identify a verified insert supplier for either product. Axios hands-on report

Which one is the better fit?
- Consider AURA if direct optical visibility of the physical scene and the Android XR/Gemini direction are priorities, and its reservation-stage availability suits your timing.
- Consider Meta’s glasses if Meta’s VR content and workspace approach, Meta AI, and its stated eye, hand, and voice inputs are more compelling, and you are willing to wait for the announced Spring 2027 sales window.
- Compare the whole setup, not only the glasses weight. Both use separate compute pucks, and the cited glasses-weight figures exclude them.
As of October 7, 2026, this is a comparison of announced and reservation-stage products, not a head-to-head review of final retail hardware. XREAL CEO Chi Xu’s June 2026 launch announcement described AURA as bringing AI-driven experiences to work and everyday life; that is the company’s positioning, not an independent assessment.
