Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNo. XLRI’s HRM programme does not guarantee better returns than Business Management (BM). The institute publishes strong placement results for the combined PGDM-HRM and PGDM-BM cohort, but the latest headline salary figures do not separate the two programmes. You can use them as a benchmark, not as proof that HRM has a higher return on investment or that any graduate will receive the median package.
The practical decision is whether a specialist HR career justifies your total cost, opportunity cost and financing risk, or whether BM’s broader management pathways are worth choosing. That requires your own payback model and a programme-separated placement report—not a single CTC number.

What XLRI charges for PGDM-HRM and PGDM-BM
XLRI’s flagship two-year residential programmes are formally the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Human Resources Management) and Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Business Management). They are often described as MBA programmes in search queries, but the current fee notices refer to PGDM(BM) and PGDM(HRM).

|---|---|---|
| Annual academic fee | Approximately ₹15.25 lakh per annum in the admissions overview | Current published reference; XLRI says fees may be revised |
| 2026 prospectus wording | Approximately ₹15.3 lakh per annum | Use as the newer planning figure, also subject to revision |
| Two-year academic fees | About ₹30.5–30.6 lakh, calculated from the published annual figures | This is a calculation, not a separately published all-in total |
| Hostel and mess | Charged separately | Obtain the applicable schedule before calculating your loan |
The ₹30.5–30.6 lakh estimate excludes hostel and mess, travel, daily living expenses, insurance, applicable taxes and interest on an education loan. Consequently, tuition alone is not the denominator for a meaningful ROI calculation. XLRI’s fee notice also reserves the right to revise charges, so an offer-year fee schedule matters more than an older estimate.

What the latest placement numbers prove—and what they do not
XLRI’s latest official placement announcement for the 2024–26 graduating class reports the following combined BM-and-HRM results:
| Measure | Published result | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Median salary | ₹29 lakh per annum | Combined flagship cohort; not an HRM-only or BM-only median |
| Average for the top 10th percentile | ₹49.2 lakh per annum | Average among the highest-paid 10% of the combined cohort |
| Average for the top 25th percentile | ₹44.18 lakh per annum | Average among the highest-paid 25% of the combined cohort |
A combined median cannot establish that HRM outperforms BM. It also is not a guaranteed offer: a median is a distribution statistic, and compensation is usually reported as CTC rather than monthly take-home pay. The placement FAQ says the data are audited under the Indian Placement Reporting Standards and include mean and median starting salary, batch percentage and job details. Before comparing returns, ask for the current report’s BM-versus-HRM split and confirm what proportion of each batch is included.

Why there is no verified HRM-versus-BM ROI winner
A fair comparison needs the same year, definitions and programme boundaries for both courses. The currently published headline does not provide a separate HRM median, BM median, mean, offer distribution or programme-level placement rate. Without those values, claiming that HRM has better returns would turn a combined result into a programme-specific conclusion.

- Median is not a promise: individual outcomes vary by prior experience, role, location, sector, interview performance and the offer accepted.
- CTC is not take-home: bonuses, stock, retirement contributions and other components may not arrive as spendable monthly cash.
- Placement coverage matters: request the percentage of the batch represented and the definition of “placed” or “starting salary.”
- Return depends on your baseline: leaving a job with a high salary creates a larger opportunity cost than leaving a low-paid role.
What HRM prepares you to do
XLRI identifies specialist HR pathways including compensation and benefits, learning and development, talent acquisition, HR analytics and HR business partner roles. Recruiters named in the institute’s HR placement material include Accenture TAP, Asian Paints, Bajaj Auto, Citi, Godrej, HUL, ITC, Mahindra, Mondelez, Nestlé, P&G, PepsiCo, Reckitt, Reliance, Sun Pharma, TAS, Vedanta and Zeiss.

That evidence supports HRM when you already want people strategy, talent, rewards, analytics or business-partner work. It does not show that every HRM graduate enters one of those roles, nor does it establish a salary premium over BM.
When BM may be the better investment
BM is the more natural choice if you value broad management optionality and are targeting consulting, product, finance, operations or general-management pathways. A broader target set can be valuable if you have not chosen a function, but breadth is not a promise of a higher package. Ask for BM’s programme-specific role mix and salary distribution before assigning a numerical premium to it.

How to calculate your own XLRI payback
Build the model before accepting an offer. Keep cash costs and economic costs separate so that a loan-funded decision does not look artificially cheap.

- Enter academic fees: use the applicable offer-year schedule, starting with roughly ₹15.25–15.3 lakh per year as the current published reference.
- Add non-tuition costs: include hostel, mess, travel, living expenses, insurance and any applicable taxes. Do not treat the ₹30.5–30.6 lakh academic estimate as an all-in total.
- Add financing cost: model the sanctioned amount, interest rate, moratorium treatment, repayment start date and total interest—not just the amount disbursed.
- Add foregone salary: include the income you would have earned during the two-year residential programme, after adjusting for a realistic raise or job change you might otherwise have received.
- Use a realistic offer: model expected take-home pay and variable compensation separately. Run conservative, midpoint and optimistic cases instead of using the top-10th-percentile figure.
- Stress-test the downside: calculate the months required to recover total economic cost if the offer is below the published combined median or if repayment begins before bonuses arrive.
| Input | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Academic fees | What does the official fee schedule for your intake actually charge? |
| Hostel, mess and living | What will two years in Jamshedpur cost beyond tuition? |
| Foregone earnings | What salary and benefits are you giving up while studying? |
| Loan interest | How much will you repay in total under the proposed terms? |
| Post-graduation income | What is your expected fixed pay, variable pay and monthly take-home? |
Admissions timing and programme scale
Indian applicants apply to both PGDM(BM) and PGDM(HRM) through XAT. XLRI’s official 2027 timeline lists registration from 15 July 2026 to 6 December 2026, the XAT exam on 3 January 2027, interviews from mid-February to mid-March, offers in April and the academic session beginning in mid-June 2027. The admissions overview lists 600 seats combined for BM and HRM. Both are two-year residential flagship programmes.
What the internship market adds to the picture
For the 2025–27 summer process, XLRI reports 583 students, 584 offers from 114 organisations, an average stipend of ₹1.6 lakh per month, a median of ₹1.55 lakh per month and a highest stipend of ₹3.5 lakh per month. These are internship outcomes, not final placement salaries, and they cover the reported process rather than proving a permanent-role advantage for HRM over BM.
A decision checklist
- Choose HRM if specialist HR work is your intended destination and you would still want those roles if the salary were close to BM’s.
- Choose BM if broader function and industry mobility is more important than an HR-specialist curriculum.
- Do not decide from the combined ₹29 lakh headline alone; obtain programme-separated audited figures for your intake.
- Compare total economic cost with expected take-home pay, not tuition with CTC.
- Ask how the placement report defines coverage, salary components, accepted offers and exclusions.
The Bottom Line
XLRI offers strong published combined outcomes, but no guarantee and no verified programme-specific ROI winner. HRM is the rational choice for a committed HR career; BM is the better fit for broader management optionality. Until XLRI publishes current, audited BM and HRM salary splits and a complete intake-specific fee schedule, treat the ₹29 lakh combined median as a benchmark—not a promise of better returns.
