Status as of August 18, 2026: The Xiaomi 16 specifications came from May 2025 reports citing an unnamed Weibo source. They were never presented as a Xiaomi-confirmed specification sheet. Xiaomi’s current official product material instead centers on the Xiaomi 17, launched on February 28, 2026, with different official branding and specifications.
What the Xiaomi 16 leak actually claimed
Contemporary reports described Xiaomi’s next compact flagship as a phone with a new Qualcomm flagship processor, three 50-megapixel rear cameras and a battery larger than 6,500mAh. Some later rumor coverage placed the capacity near 7,000mAh. The claims appeared in reports from Gizmochina, Gadgets 360 and Notebookcheck.

None of those reports was a Xiaomi announcement, Qualcomm document, certification filing, retail listing or hands-on review. The correct wording is therefore “the leak claimed” or “reports said,” not “Xiaomi 16 has.”

The leak called Qualcomm’s expected successor to the Snapdragon 8 Elite “Snapdragon 8 Elite 2.” That was industry shorthand used before the final commercial branding was clear. It should not be treated as an official Qualcomm model name, and the reports did not establish the chip’s final specifications or performance.

Cameras: three 50MP rear sensors
The reported arrangement was a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP telephoto. Notebookcheck’s camera report further described a main sensor around 1/1.3 inch, but those details also remained unconfirmed leaks.
Battery: above 6,500mAh, possibly near 7,000mAh
The earliest claim was a capacity exceeding 6,500mAh. Later summaries suggested approximately 7,000mAh, but that larger figure was not an official Xiaomi rating. Capacity estimates can also differ by region and by whether a source is quoting typical or rated capacity.
Why three 50MP cameras would not settle camera quality
Megapixel counts describe image dimensions, not photographic performance. A buyer would still need the sensor sizes, lens apertures, optical image stabilization, telephoto focal length and optical-zoom range, ultrawide field of view, autofocus behavior, video limits and image-processing quality. Leica tuning and software modes can also materially affect results.

The leak did not establish sample images, stabilization performance, video specifications or whether all three cameras used equally capable sensors. A triple-50MP specification could therefore describe a versatile system without proving that it would outperform a rival phone with fewer, larger sensors.
Why the battery rumor mattered
A battery above 6,500mAh would have been unusually large for a compact flagship. It would potentially improve time away from a charger, but mAh is not a guaranteed screen-on-time measurement. Brightness, refresh rate, mobile reception, gaming, camera use, temperature and software optimization all affect endurance.
A larger cell can also increase weight, thickness and thermal-design demands. Regional versions may have different capacities, and fast charging requires a compatible charger and charging protocol. The original reports supplied no verified weight, dimensions, endurance test or charging specification.

The Xiaomi 17’s processor name is not proof that it is technically identical to the rumored “Snapdragon 8 Elite 2.” It shows that Qualcomm’s final branding differed from the shorthand used in early reports.
What the Xiaomi 17 says about the old leak
The later phone follows a similar direction: flagship Qualcomm silicon, a compact 6.3-inch format, high-capacity battery technology and a Leica-branded multi-camera system. Xiaomi says its battery contains 16% silicon and claims up to 29.2 hours of video playback; those are manufacturer claims, not independent endurance results. The official UK page lists 100W wired and 50W wireless charging.

That resemblance makes the Xiaomi 16 report interesting, but it does not retroactively confirm the old model name, the rumored processor label, the three-50MP configuration or the 6,500–7,000mAh estimate. A successor can preserve a design direction while changing the product name, hardware and regional specifications.

Do not buy—or postpone a purchase—on the strength of the Xiaomi 16 headline alone. Before ordering a Xiaomi 17 or any later model, verify:
- the exact official model name and your country’s product page;
- cellular bands, eSIM support and Google-service compatibility;
- warranty coverage and whether the seller is authorized;
- the final camera modules, telephoto zoom and stabilization;
- typical versus rated battery capacity;
- the included charger and supported charging standard;
- HyperOS and Android versions, update policy and regional features.
Xiaomi’s FAQ says the first Xiaomi 17 batch runs HyperOS 3 based on Android 16. Chinese-market imports can differ in software, payment support, network bands, bootloader policy and warranty. A regional Xiaomi page also does not guarantee United States availability; check the Xiaomi United States storefront before importing.

Readers who prioritize a larger camera-focused flagship can also review Xiaomi’s official Xiaomi 17 Series material, which describes the Xiaomi 17 Ultra with a 6,000mAh typical battery, 90W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and a 50MP rear camera. It is not the compact option.
Verdict
The Xiaomi 16 story was a real 2025 leak, not a confirmed specification announcement. Its broad themes—next-generation Snapdragon silicon, a 50MP-heavy camera system and a much larger compact-phone battery—resembled the direction Xiaomi later took with the Xiaomi 17. But the original Xiaomi 16 processor name, camera layout, battery size and release status remain unconfirmed. For a current purchase decision, investigate the officially documented Xiaomi 17 and verify regional availability, warranty and hardware before paying.
