Apple says the program is ending. Existing members can keep paying their 24-month loan and own the phone at the end, while shoppers choosing their next iPhone must compare Xfinity Mobile’s plan-dependent upgrade offers with Apple’s current lease, financing, or outright-purchase routes.
Xfinity can make sense if you already intend to keep an eligible Mobile Plus or Premium Unlimited plan and your account receives a favorable upgrade quote. The advertised device payment is not enough to decide: include service, coverage, taxes, trade-in value, monthly credits, and the cost of leaving the qualifying plan.

What this comparison means in 2026
The two choices are no longer symmetrical. Apple’s U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program is a legacy installment-loan program that Apple says is “coming to an end.” It is still relevant to people who already have an account, but it should not be presented as an ordinary program that a new customer can join.

Xfinity Mobile, by contrast, continues to advertise upgrade paths tied to particular service plans and device-payment offers. The exact eligibility, phone, trade-in value, and credits shown to one Xfinity account may differ from another. The information below is U.S.-focused and reflects official terms and pages checked October 13, 2026; promotions and eligibility can change.

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
The decision in one sentence
If you are an existing Apple program member, decide whether to finish your current loan or use Apple’s replacement route when you qualify. If you are buying a new phone, compare Xfinity’s complete service-and-device commitment with an Apple lease, financing, or purchase—not with a supposedly available new enrollment in the old program.
Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program is ending
Apple’s official program page tells members that the iPhone Upgrade Program is ending. Existing members may continue making payments under their current agreement. After 24 payments, the loan closes and the member owns the iPhone. Apple also says members who have made enough payments to qualify for another iPhone can select a different route, including Apple Upgrade, carrier offers, Apple financing, or buying a phone outright.

What existing members should check
The U.S. program terms describe a 24-month, 0% APR installment loan for the retail price of an eligible iPhone and a selected AppleCare+ plan. The agreement requires a credit check and is made with Citizens Bank, N.A., doing business as Citizens One. Wireless service must be activated with an eligible carrier.
To exercise the program’s upgrade option, the terms require at least the equivalent of 12 installments, an account in good standing, continuous AppleCare+, and an iPhone in acceptable physical and operational condition. A new loan application and a new credit check are required for the replacement phone. Meeting the 12-payment threshold does not mean a new phone is automatic; the new application and current eligibility still apply.
What happens after 24 payments
When the existing loan reaches 24 payments, the member owns the phone. That ownership outcome is different from a lease. If you are satisfied with the device and want to keep it, completing the loan can be the simplest path. If you want a newer iPhone earlier, check that the payment, AppleCare+, condition, and credit requirements are satisfied before applying for the next route.

Apple’s current replacement route is a lease, not the old loan
Apple’s July 2026 U.S. announcement identifies Apple Upgrade as a current lease option. For iPhones, Apple lists AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon as eligible carrier choices and excludes prepaid plans. Apple describes leased iPhones as unlocked. Approval and eligibility apply, and ending a lease early can result in substantial fees.
Xfinity Mobile is not on Apple’s stated carrier list for this iPhone lease. Therefore, do not assume that an Apple Upgrade lease can be combined with Xfinity service simply because the handset is unlocked. Confirm the carrier requirement in the offer before submitting an application.
A dated Apple price example
Apple’s 2026 example for an iPhone 17 Pro 256GB lists a $1,099 purchase price, a $31.99 monthly payment for 24 months, or $45.99 monthly for 12 months. The example excludes taxes and trade-in credit and is not an individualized quote for every model or buyer. It illustrates why a monthly figure alone is incomplete: the term, ownership or return obligation, carrier eligibility, coverage, tax, trade-in, and approval all affect the real commitment.
How Xfinity Mobile’s upgrade route works
Xfinity uses device-payment plans and conditional account credits rather than a universal, carrier-independent upgrade promise. Its current Upgrade Anytime FAQ names Mobile Plus and Premium Unlimited as eligible plans. A qualifying customer generally trades in the existing phone, receives a credit for the old device’s remaining payment balance after the upgrade is completed, and receives the new phone’s discount as monthly account credits over the new device-payment term.
Upgrade Anytime: the important conditions
- The account must have an eligible Mobile Plus or Premium Unlimited plan under the offer being used.
- The account must satisfy the applicable device-payment and account-standing requirements.
- The old phone must pass the required identity and condition checks. An IMEI mismatch or a rejected condition assessment can cause the phone to be returned and leave the old balance payable.
- Xfinity says the credit equal to the old phone’s remaining device-payment balance is applied within three billing cycles after all requirements are met and the upgrade is complete.
- The new phone’s discount is generally delivered as monthly credits, not as an immediate reduction that is independent of the service plan.
The terms are conditional. If you cancel or downgrade the qualifying Mobile Plus or Premium Unlimited plan, Xfinity warns that you may owe repayment of payment-plan credits applied to the traded-in device and lose remaining discounts on the new device.
Elite Upgrade and plan-specific terms
April 2026 Mobile Plus Elite Upgrade and Elite Upgrade terms describe programs requiring an eligible plan, a new phone on a device-payment plan, and surrender or trade-in of the existing phone. The account must be in good standing, and the phone’s identity must match the device on the payment plan or a qualifying replacement.

For Elite Upgrade, the existing phone must be in good working order. Security features such as Find My iPhone must be turned off before the device is accepted. Because Xfinity publishes multiple plan-specific documents, use the terms attached to the exact offer on your account rather than assuming that every “Upgrade Anytime” or “Elite Upgrade” condition is interchangeable.
Device-payment-plan and tax requirements
Xfinity says device-payment-plan availability can depend on credit screening or payment history. Applicable sales tax is due upfront. Its device-payment FAQ also describes an early-upgrade situation in which the remaining balance may be waived when the customer qualifies and takes a like-new phone to an Xfinity retail store. That is not an unconditional balance wipe; confirm the route, phone condition, store requirement, and offer-specific eligibility before relying on it.
Side-by-side comparison
| Question | Xfinity Mobile upgrade | Apple iPhone Upgrade Program (existing members) | Apple Upgrade lease (current option) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can a new shopper rely on it? | Only if the account and current offer meet Xfinity’s requirements. | No. Apple says the program is ending. | Potentially, subject to approval, carrier, model, and lease eligibility. |
| Service requirement | Eligible Xfinity plan, commonly Mobile Plus or Premium Unlimited for Upgrade Anytime. | Wireless service with an eligible carrier was required by the loan terms. | Apple’s iPhone list names AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon and excludes prepaid plans; Xfinity is not listed. |
| Payment structure | Xfinity device-payment plan; credits and discounts are tied to the offer and account. | 24-month, 0% APR loan for the iPhone and selected AppleCare+ plan. | Lease payments under Apple’s current lease offer. |
| When can an upgrade occur? | When the specific plan, account, device, and trade-in conditions are met. | The terms required at least the equivalent of 12 installments, good standing, continuous AppleCare+, and acceptable condition. | Follow the lease offer’s approval and term; early termination may carry substantial fees. |
| What happens to the old phone? | It must be surrendered or traded in for the relevant credit. | At 24 payments, the member owns the phone; an earlier upgrade uses the program’s condition and payment requirements. | Resolve or return the leased phone according to the applicable end-of-term terms. |
| What can end the discount? | Leaving or downgrading the qualifying plan can trigger repayment and end future credits. | Existing loan obligations continue until paid; a replacement requires a new application. | Ending the lease early can create substantial charges. |
How to compare the real cost
Use the same ownership period for every option. A useful worksheet is:

The formula is not a promise of a particular price. It prevents the most common mistake: comparing one provider’s device payment with another provider’s device payment while ignoring the plan and the conditions attached to each figure.
Include the service plan
For Xfinity, add the cost of keeping the eligible Mobile Plus or Premium Unlimited plan for as long as the device credits run. If you expect to switch to a cheaper plan, leave Xfinity, or cancel the line before the new device is paid off, model the repayment of old-device credits and the loss of future discounts.

For Apple’s lease, include the carrier plan Apple requires for the offer. For an existing Apple loan, include the wireless service and AppleCare+ obligations that apply to the agreement. A phone payment at 0% APR is not the same as a free phone, and a low lease payment is not the same as ownership.
Include taxes, coverage, and trade-in value
Xfinity says applicable sales tax is paid upfront. Apple’s $1,099, $31.99, and $45.99 figures exclude taxes and trade-in credit. Record the tax at checkout rather than assuming it is spread over the term.
Record AppleCare+ or other protection separately. The legacy Apple loan included the selected AppleCare+ plan in the financed amount, while an Xfinity offer may present coverage separately. Record the actual trade-in value and the promotional credit schedule, not only the phone’s advertised retail price.
Model the exit date
Choose an intended date to leave the carrier or change plans—12, 24, or another realistic month—and calculate the balance then. Xfinity’s warning about repayment and lost future credits makes the exit date especially important. Apple’s lease may impose substantial early-termination charges, while the legacy loan ends in ownership after 24 payments.

You are choosing a carrier and phone from scratch
Do not select Xfinity solely because an advertised phone payment is low. Compare the full Xfinity plan commitment with Apple’s current lease eligibility, a conventional Apple financing option, and an outright purchase. If you need Xfinity service anyway and expect to stay on the qualifying plan, its conditional credits may fit. If you value owning the phone without a carrier-linked credit schedule, an outright purchase or completed installment loan may be easier to understand.
You want flexibility to change carriers
Carrier-linked credits create a switching cost. Xfinity’s terms specifically warn about repayment and lost discounts after cancellation or downgrade. Apple’s lease has its own carrier and early-termination rules. A route with a higher monthly payment but fewer conditional credits can be cheaper overall if you regularly change carriers.
Step-by-step checklist before ordering
For an Xfinity upgrade
- Open the exact offer on your Xfinity account and record the plan name, phone model, device-payment term, trade-in value, monthly credit, required line, and offer expiration.
- Confirm that your account is in good standing and that device-payment eligibility is available; Xfinity says credit screening or payment history can affect eligibility.
- Calculate the qualifying plan’s cost through the date the new device is paid off, including upfront tax.
- Check the old phone’s IMEI against the payment plan and inspect its physical and operational condition.
- Back up the phone, erase personal data, and turn off security features such as Find My iPhone when the applicable terms require it.
- Keep the trade-in receipt and shipment or store record. Monitor the account for the old-balance credit within the stated three-billing-cycle window.
- Do not cancel or downgrade the qualifying plan until you have calculated the repayment and lost-credit consequences.
For an existing Apple program account
- Check how many installments have posted and whether you have reached the equivalent of 12 payments.
- Confirm good standing, continuous AppleCare+, and acceptable physical and operational condition.
- Decide whether you want ownership after 24 payments or a new phone under a currently available Apple route.
- If applying for another phone, expect a new loan application and credit check.
- Compare the new phone’s total cost, carrier requirement, coverage, tax, and ownership or return terms before accepting.
For Apple Upgrade leasing
- Verify that your carrier is one Apple lists for the iPhone lease and that the plan is not prepaid.
- Read the lease term and end-of-term instructions for the exact model.
- Calculate the cost of early termination before signing if you might change phones or carriers early.
- Confirm approval, tax, trade-in treatment, and any coverage charge in the final checkout quote.
Pitfalls and how to recover
“The iPhone Upgrade Program is still on the website, so I can join.”
Apple’s current message says the program is ending. Treat the page as support for existing members, not evidence that normal new enrollment remains open. Ask Apple which current purchase, financing, or lease route applies to your account and model.
The trade-in is rejected
An Xfinity IMEI mismatch or condition rejection can result in the device being returned and the old balance becoming payable. Keep the original phone until acceptance is confirmed, document its condition, verify the IMEI before shipment, and retain the handoff receipt. If a rejection occurs, ask Xfinity whether the device can be resubmitted, returned, or corrected under the specific offer terms.
The bill still shows the old balance
Xfinity says the qualifying old-device credit can appear within three billing cycles after the upgrade is complete. Check that all requirements were recorded as complete, then contact Xfinity with the trade-in and upgrade documentation if the credit is missing after that window.
You need to downgrade the plan
Calculate the amount of any old-device credit that could be reclaimed and the future new-device credits that would stop. A cheaper plan may still be less expensive overall, but only after those consequences are included.
You find an attractive dated promotion
An Xfinity device page displayed an iPhone 18 Pro offer requiring a qualifying trade-in, device-payment plan, Mobile Plus, and Xfinity Internet, but its stated end date was October 8, 2026—before the October 13 information check. It should not be treated as current. Another Xfinity deals page names iPhone 18 Pro Max with qualifying trade-in, a new Mobile Plus line, and a device-payment plan; verify availability, price, and every current condition in your account before relying on it.
A practical verdict
For an existing Apple program member, the choice is usually between finishing a known 24-month loan and evaluating a new, separately approved Apple route. For an Xfinity customer, the upgrade route is worth serious consideration only when the qualifying plan already fits your needs and the account-specific credits survive the period you expect to stay.
For a new shopper, there is no evidence-based universal winner. Build a side-by-side quote using the same phone, term, tax treatment, coverage, service period, trade-in assumptions, and exit date. The cheapest-looking monthly payment can become the most expensive option if it requires a plan you would not otherwise keep or if leaving causes credits to be repaid.
