That is the clearest route for a newcomer because it follows the series’ release order while letting you learn each game’s distinct world, cast and combat vocabulary in sequence. You do not need the first game as a story prerequisite for the second: Nintendo presents separate protagonists, settings and battle systems. If your real question is about Torna – The Golden Country, that is a separate ordering decision covered below.
The short answer: play Definitive Edition first
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is the recommended starting point, followed by Xenoblade Chronicles 2. This is a release-order recommendation, not a claim that the second game is incomprehensible without the first. Nintendo’s descriptions identify different leads, worlds and combat mechanics, so either game can function as an entry point on its own terms.

What you are stepping into in each game
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition — Shulk, the Monado and the Mechon
You play as Shulk, who discovers the power of the Monado and joins companions in confronting the Mechon. Nintendo describes combat as strategic and real-time: you control a party while positioning characters, reacting to glimpses of the future, improving equipment and weapon skills, inserting gems and building Chain Attacks.
That description tells a prospective player what the first game asks you to learn. Battles are not simply about selecting an attack and waiting. You read the field, place party members appropriately, use the Monado’s capabilities when the future mechanic warns of danger, and coordinate a team attack when the conditions are right. If you like a party system built around positioning and situational responses, this is the more natural first experiment.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 — Rex, Pyra, Drivers and Blades
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 follows Rex and Pyra across Alrest, where people live on enormous Titans and seek Elysium. Its central combat language is different: Drivers partner with Blades, use the weapons and powers those Blades provide, and switch between Blades while fighting.
The important distinction is not a simple “old versus new” progression. You are learning a separate set of relationships and controls. Instead of the first game’s Monado-centered premise and positioning emphasis, the second game asks you to understand Driver–Blade partnerships, weapon types and the timing of switches. Players attracted to a protagonist-and-companion journey through a Titan-based world may prefer that premise immediately, but starting there means learning the series through its later system first.
Is the first game required to understand the second?
No requirement is established by Nintendo’s official game descriptions. They present separate protagonists, settings and battle mechanics, and do not say that completing Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is a prerequisite for understanding Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

That does not make the order meaningless. Playing the first game first follows release order and gives you a baseline for how the series can handle real-time party combat before you meet the second game’s Driver-and-Blade structure. Playing the second first is still a valid personal route if Rex, Pyra, Alrest or the Blade system is what interests you most. The recommendation here is about the clearest default, not a rule that invalidates the alternative.
Release order, story order and your first playthrough
Release order
The relevant Switch releases are Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on December 1, 2017, followed by Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition on May 29, 2020. For a newcomer choosing only between these two games, play Definitive Edition first and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 second.

Story order
The evidence supplied for these two main games does not establish a complete chronological sequence that should replace release order. Avoid treating the recommendation as a mandatory timeline: the official descriptions do not frame the first game as a prologue to the second.
If you already own only one
- Only Definitive Edition: start it. There is no reason to wait for the second game before beginning.
- Only Xenoblade Chronicles 2: start it if that is the game you have and want to play. The first game is not established as a prerequisite.
- Both games: use Definitive Edition first, then Xenoblade Chronicles 2, unless a specific interest in Rex, Pyra and the Blade system outweighs the release-order benefit for you.
How to choose based on the experience you want
Choose Definitive Edition first if you want…
- A starting point that follows the order in which the two Switch games released.
- Shulk’s story, the Monado and the conflict with the Mechon.
- Combat built around party positioning, future-seeing, equipment and weapon-skill upgrades, gems and Chain Attacks.
- To learn the first game’s vocabulary before moving to the Driver-and-Blade system.
Choose Xenoblade Chronicles 2 first if you want…
- Rex and Pyra’s journey through Alrest.
- A world where people live on colossal Titans and the search for Elysium drives the adventure.
- Combat centered on Drivers partnering with Blades.
- To switch between Blades and use the weapons and powers they provide from the beginning.
These are preference signals, not a quality ranking. The available official descriptions support what each game contains, but they do not provide a comparative review score, completion-time average or player survey that would justify declaring a universal winner.
Where Torna – The Golden Country fits
Torna – The Golden Country is an additional story associated with Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It is set 500 years before the main game, so its chronological setting is earlier. Chronological placement and recommended play placement are not the same question.

The simplest, spoiler-conscious route
Play Xenoblade Chronicles 2 first, then play Torna – The Golden Country. This preserves the main game’s original flow and lets you approach the prequel as an additional story after you know the main game’s premise and cast.

Tetsuya Takahashi, executive producer at Monolith Soft, described a different route for players who want the placement he personally suggested: begin Xenoblade Chronicles 2, finish through Chapter 7, complete Torna – The Golden Country, then continue the main game from Chapter 8. His exact wording was: “Speaking purely from a personal perspective, I’d say if you haven’t played either, you should start with the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 main game, finish up until Chapter 7, then play through Torna – The Golden Country, then finish the rest of the game from Chapter 8.”
He also said, “So it’s possible that players will view the main game a little differently if they play Torna – The Golden Country first.” Treat this as an attributed developer preference, not a universal instruction. Stopping a main-game playthrough at Chapter 7 can interrupt its momentum, while playing Torna afterward keeps the first run straightforward. If you choose the interleaved route, stop at the end of Chapter 7 rather than treating Torna as a pre-game tutorial.
Do you need Torna to understand Xenoblade Chronicles 2?
No. It is an additional story, not a replacement for the main game. You can complete Xenoblade Chronicles 2 without owning Torna, then decide whether its earlier setting and expanded perspective interest you.
Buying Torna: standalone release or Expansion Pass
Nintendo lists Torna as available through the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion Pass or as a standalone retail version. The standalone version contains the same Torna story as the Expansion Pass and also includes a download code for Expansion Pass packs 1–4. Those packs can be played only in Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

| Purchase route | What it provides | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Expansion Pass | Torna plus the listed Expansion Pass content for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. | It is tied to ownership of the main game for use of the additional packs. |
| Standalone Torna | The same Torna story, plus a code for Expansion Pass packs 1–4. | The main Xenoblade Chronicles 2 game is not included. |
There is no reason to purchase both the standalone Torna release and the Expansion Pass for the same content. If you buy standalone Torna, remember that it does not include the main game; if you want to play the complete Xenoblade Chronicles 2 package, obtain the main game separately.
Which edition should you look for on Switch?
The first game’s official Nintendo listing identifies the Switch release as Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition and also shows a Switch 2 version selection. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 originally released for Nintendo Switch on December 1, 2017.
Nintendo’s support history states that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 gained compatibility with its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in update 3.0.0, released July 22, 2026, and that the Switch 2 Edition became playable July 30, 2026. Edition availability and upgrade details can vary by region and change in the current store listing, so check the product page for your country before buying. Do not assume that a standard Switch listing and a Switch 2 Edition have identical entitlement or upgrade terms.
For a standard search, use the exact names Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Nintendo Switch game and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch game. Verify the platform label, region, edition and whether you are buying a base game, an expansion or a bundle.

A practical play-order checklist
- Identify your hardware and store region. Confirm whether you are shopping for Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 and read the current edition label.
- Pick your first main game. If you have no strong preference, choose Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition.
- Finish or pause at a natural point. Do not buy Torna as though it were required to begin either main game.
- Move to Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Expect a different protagonist, world and combat vocabulary rather than a direct continuation of the first game’s systems.
- Decide on Torna after understanding your plan. Play it after the main game for the simplest route, or use Takahashi’s Chapter 7–Torna–Chapter 8 sequence if you specifically want that attributed interleave.
- Check what a Torna purchase includes. Standalone Torna does not include Xenoblade Chronicles 2; the Expansion Pass and standalone release should not both be purchased for identical content.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the first game is mandatory homework
The two official descriptions do not establish that relationship. Start with Definitive Edition because it is the clearest release-order introduction, not because Xenoblade Chronicles 2 cannot be understood alone.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

Confusing chronological Torna order with the safest first-play order
Torna’s story takes place 500 years earlier, but that does not automatically mean it should be played before the main game. For a first run, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 followed by Torna is the least disruptive route.
Buying both Torna formats
Nintendo says the standalone version contains the same Torna story as the Expansion Pass. Compare the contents you already own before paying for a second copy.
Expecting the combat systems to transfer unchanged
Definitive Edition emphasizes positioning, future-seeing, equipment, weapon skills, gems and Chain Attacks. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 emphasizes Drivers, Blades, their weapons and powers, and switching between Blades. Treat the second game as a new system to learn rather than an expansion of the first game’s controls.
Final recommendation by player type
| If this describes you | Start with | Then consider |
|---|---|---|
| You are new to the series and have no strong preference. | Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition | Xenoblade Chronicles 2, then Torna if wanted. |
| You are most interested in Shulk, the Monado and Mechon conflict. | Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition | Xenoblade Chronicles 2 afterward. |
| You are most interested in Rex, Pyra, Titans and Blade switching. | Xenoblade Chronicles 2 | Torna – The Golden Country afterward or at the Chapter 7 break. |
| You are deciding only when to play Torna. | Xenoblade Chronicles 2 first for the simplest route. | Use the Chapter 7–Torna–Chapter 8 sequence only if you want Takahashi’s attributed alternative. |
For the original question—Xenoblade Chronicles or Xenoblade Chronicles 2 first—the answer is Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, followed by Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Choose the other order only because its premise or combat system is the one you most want to play now, not because you need to satisfy a hidden story requirement.
