Start by treating Drivers, Blades, Affinity Charts, Core Crystals, and Field Skills as one connected system. Drivers are the playable characters who use Driver Arts and build the Party Gauge; Blades provide weapon classes, elements, Blade Specials, and Field Skills. Open new Blades carefully, develop their charts during normal play, and change your active party when an exploration check asks for a skill you do not currently have.
What is the difference between a Driver and a Blade in Xenoblade Chronicles 2?
A Driver is a playable party member. Drivers attack with Driver Arts, switch between their equipped Blades, and contribute to the Party Gauge used for major combat actions. A Blade is a resonated partner that supplies a weapon class, an elemental identity, Blade Specials, and Field Skills. You control the Driver directly, while the selected Blade determines much of that Driver’s current combat toolkit.

The relationship is complementary rather than interchangeable. A Driver without a useful Blade setup loses access to important attack types and elements; a Blade is not a separate playable character that you move around independently. Nintendo’s official overview explains that Blades empower Drivers and that only one Blade per Driver is active in battle at a time. Switching Blades is therefore a combat decision, not merely an equipment-screen adjustment.

Early battles become easier when you stop thinking of a Blade as a collectible and start thinking of it as a role. A new Blade may add a missing weapon, element, healing option or Field Skill. Keep the party’s practical coverage in mind instead of equipping every new pull automatically.

How Core Crystals work
Core Crystals are the items used to bond with Blades. Using one opens a resonance sequence and may add a new Blade to the roster. The result is not a guaranteed specific character, weapon or element, so opening crystals should be treated as roster planning rather than a way to order a particular outcome.
Should I save Core Crystals early on?
Use common crystals when your party has an obvious role gap. Early access to another weapon class, element or Field Skill can be more valuable than keeping every crystal unopened. The practical reason to hold rarer or premium crystals is different: you may not yet understand what your team lacks, and a more deliberate opening later lets you choose around that information. This is a planning approach, not a probability exploit or a promise of a rare Blade.
| Situation | Reasonable crystal choice | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Your party lacks a combat role or useful weapon | Open available common crystals | Which Driver needs coverage and which element or weapon is missing? |
| You are still learning the roster | Keep some rare or premium crystals for later | Whether your current Blades already cover healing, damage and required elements |
| You are blocked by exploration | Consider any crystal that could add a needed Field Skill | The exact skill named at the obstacle and whether a current Blade can be developed instead |
| You want a particular rare Blade | Do not assume any crystal guarantees it | In-game information or a detailed reference for the relevant Blade, if you decide the uncertainty is acceptable |
Do not open crystals solely because the inventory feels untidy. Before resonating, look at each Driver’s current Blade slots and note whether the team can handle normal damage, survivability and the elements needed for your current combat objectives. Common Blades remain valuable when they provide a skill or role you otherwise cannot access.

Affinity Charts: the progression system you should check first
Every Blade has an Affinity Chart containing abilities and progression nodes. The chart is not a single experience bar. Each node lists a condition, and completing that condition unlocks the reward and may reveal additional branches. One Blade may ask you to use a Special a certain way, while another may require fighting, gathering, completing a quest or reaching a Trust threshold.
How do I unlock a Blade’s Affinity Chart skills?
- Open the Blade management screen. Select the relevant Driver, open Blade Setup, choose the Blade, and view its Affinity Chart. A GameFAQs walkthrough that reproduces the in-game tutorial identifies this menu as the place to inspect Blade development and Affinity Rewards.
- Read the first available nodes. Separate conditions that can happen naturally—such as fighting or collecting materials—from conditions that need a specific quest, interaction or Trust level.
- Use the Blade in ordinary activities. Keep the Blade equipped when its chart asks for combat actions, gathering or Specials. You usually do not need a dedicated grinding session for the easiest early nodes.
- Claim or register completed rewards. Return to the chart after meeting a condition and confirm the node. An unlocked node can expose the next branch, so a chart that appears stuck may simply need its previous requirement completed.
- Recheck the newly opened branch. Look for a role improvement, a new Field Skill rank, a combat modifier or a Trust requirement that changes your next priority.
Affinity Rewards can grant or improve abilities, including Field Skills. Nintendo’s update history also records Trust and Field Skill sorting options and fixes affecting Affinity Rewards, confirming that these are separate, real categories in the game’s menus. Do not assume that every use of the word “affinity” represents the same numerical effect; use the specific Blade’s chart and Trust display for the requirement in front of you.
Trust and efficient Blade development
Trust is one of the requirements that can appear on an Affinity Chart. When a node names Trust, raising that Blade’s relationship is part of the condition; fighting alone may not satisfy it. Read the chart’s exact wording instead of applying a universal rule to every Blade, because chart requirements differ.

A low-grind routine
- When you receive a new Blade, inspect the chart before leaving the menu.
- Prioritize early nodes whose requirements match activities you already perform.
- Equip the Blade during routine battles if its chart asks for combat use or Specials.
- Keep a note of nodes that require a quest, a particular gathering action or Trust, then handle those when the story or area makes them convenient.
- Revisit the chart after unlocking a branch, because a newly available Field Skill or combat ability may change the party’s needs.
This approach prevents a common mistake: collecting Blades without developing any of them. A levelled Driver can still struggle if the party ignores chart rewards, Trust requirements and the combat options those rewards unlock.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy can’t I open certain doors or chests?
Many doors, chests, paths and quest interactions are Field Skill checks. A Blade’s Field Skills are tested when you interact with the obstacle; they are not automatically available just because that Blade exists somewhere in your collection. The game checks the relevant skill levels across the active party.
If the interaction says you lack a skill or rank, that is usually a party-setup problem or a progression problem, not proof that the route is permanently closed. Optional rewards can be designed for a later return, and the reviewed beginner references support swapping in a suitable Blade or coming back after development. They do not establish a complete list of every story-critical check and its minimum rank, so rely on the exact prompt at your location rather than assuming one universal threshold.

What to do when a Field Skill check fails
- Read the complete requirement. Note the skill name and the rank requested. Do not substitute a similar-sounding skill.
- Open the Blade menu. Inspect your roster and identify Blades that possess the required Field Skill. A common Blade can be the correct answer if it supplies the missing ability.
- Change the active party. Include a Driver and Blade combination that contributes the skill to the party being checked. Confirm the change before returning to the obstacle.
- Raise the relevant chart node if necessary. If your only candidate has the skill at too low a rank, check its Affinity Chart for the next Field Skill reward and complete the stated condition.
- Return later when appropriate. If the interaction is optional or the required node is not yet practical, mark the location mentally and continue the story or nearby activities.
| Response | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Swap in an available Blade | You already own the required skill at the requested rank | The temporary party may have less ideal combat coverage |
| Develop a current Blade | You have the right Blade but its chart has not reached the required node | Requires completing the listed activity or Trust condition |
| Return later | The reward is optional or progression has not made the requirement convenient | You postpone the chest, path or interaction |
Combat habits that make the systems work together
Do not level Drivers while ignoring their Blades. Use the systems the game introduces: Driver Arts, Blade switching, Blade Specials, Driver Combos and Chain Attacks. Building the Party Gauge through normal combat gives the party access to stronger coordinated actions, while properly developed Blades add the elements and abilities needed to use those systems effectively.
The beginner guidance associated with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 warns that ignoring combos and neglecting Trust progression can leave a player struggling despite gaining character levels. That does not mean one fixed build is mandatory. It means character level is only one part of performance. If a fight feels disproportionately difficult, inspect whether your active Blades have usable charts, whether the party has complementary roles and whether you are using the combo and Chain Attack mechanics already introduced to you.
A practical battle loop
- Begin with the Driver and Blade that fit the encounter’s role and element needs.
- Use Driver Arts deliberately rather than treating basic attacks as the entire combat system.
- Switch Blades when another weapon, element or Special better serves the situation.
- Watch the Party Gauge and use the coordinated options the story has taught you.
- After the battle, check whether a Blade’s chart condition was completed and claim the reward before moving on.
First-hours checklist
- Inspect every new Blade’s Affinity Chart immediately.
- Keep at least one practical option for each role your current battles demand.
- Use common Core Crystals to address clear gaps instead of hoarding everything.
- Save some rare or premium crystals until you understand your roster better.
- Develop easy chart nodes during ordinary fights and gathering.
- Read Trust requirements exactly; do not assume all affinity-related effects are identical.
- When an obstacle blocks you, identify the named Field Skill, check the active party and decide whether to swap, develop or return later.
- Practice Driver Combos and Chain Attacks as they become available.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Opening every crystal immediately
Problem: You gain Blades without knowing which role or Field Skill the party needs. Fix: Use common crystals for immediate coverage and reserve rarer options until your team has a defined gap.

Leaving a new Blade undeveloped
Problem: The Blade remains at its starting capability while useful chart rewards stay locked. Fix: Read the first nodes and complete the easy combat, gathering or quest conditions during normal play.
Assuming a blocked chest is a permanent story lock
Problem: You abandon an area or repeatedly interact with the same obstacle. Fix: Check the required Field Skill, adjust the active party or return after raising the relevant chart node.
Confusing Driver level with complete progression
Problem: The party is levelled but lacks effective combos, Trust progress or role coverage. Fix: Develop Blades, use their Specials and practice the combat systems introduced by the game.
The short decision framework
When you receive a Core Crystal, ask what the team lacks before deciding when to use it. When you receive a Blade, open its Affinity Chart before deciding how to use it. When an exploration check fails, read the exact skill requirement before deciding whether to change the party or postpone the reward. Those three pauses turn random-looking systems into a manageable routine: build coverage, develop the Blades you actually use, and return to Field Skill obstacles with the right party rather than forcing progress with an incomplete setup.
