Xbox’s New OLED ROG Ally X20 Gets Major Praise From Former PlayStation Executive

ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally X20 is now available as a $1,299 handheld gaming PC, and Shuhei Yoshida, the former President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, has called it his favorite portable gaming PC. The X20’s standout change is a larger 7.4-inch OLED screen with HDR, 120Hz refresh and variable refresh rate, while its underlying performance is broadly the same as the previous ROG Xbox Ally X.

What Shuhei Yoshida said about the ROG Xbox Ally X20

Yoshida posted his reaction on October 16, 2026. Pure Xbox identifies him as the former President of SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) Worldwide Studios. His post said:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

“My new favorite portable gaming PC, ROG Xbox Ally X20! A larger, beautiful OLED display is a big upgrade @ASUS_ROG.”

The endorsement is notable because Yoshida is closely associated with PlayStation, yet he praised an Xbox-branded Windows handheld specifically for its screen upgrade. His comment is a personal opinion, not an independent performance test or a claim that the X20 is faster than the Ally X.

ROG Xbox Ally X20: what is new

ASUS announced availability on October 15, 2026. The X20 is a real retail product rather than a rumor or prototype. Its main changes are concentrated in the display, controls, chassis and cooling system.

Feature ROG Xbox Ally X20 ROG Xbox Ally X
Display 7.4-inch FHD OLED, up to 120Hz, HDR and VRR LCD; 7-inch class display, with the X model’s measured brightness of 515.8 nits in Tom’s Guide testing

Wireless Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4 Not stated in the cited review comparison
Operating system Windows 11 Windows 11
Launch price $1,299 standalone $999 listed MSRP

The OLED display is the defining upgrade

The X20 uses a 7.4-inch full-HD OLED panel with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, HDR support and variable refresh rate. ASUS lists VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification and a 0.2ms response time. OLED’s per-pixel lighting enables true black levels and stronger contrast than the Ally X’s LCD, while VRR helps smooth frame delivery when game performance fluctuates.

Tom’s Guide measured average brightness of 579.8 nits on the X20, compared with 515.8 nits on the LCD Ally X, and described the screen as a standout feature. Those are measurements from that review’s testing conditions, not a universal brightness guarantee for every unit or firmware version.

Controls and ergonomics

ASUS revised the physical interface with TMR (tunnel magnetoresistance) joysticks, rubberized grips, redesigned bumpers and triggers, and customizable controls oriented around the Xbox layout. These changes target comfort and input feel rather than raw frame rates, making them most relevant to people who play handheld for long sessions or switch frequently between console-style and PC controls.

Cooling changes

ASUS says the redesigned fans increase airflow by 20% and the heatsink fin area by 11%. Those percentages are manufacturer claims. They indicate a redesign intended to manage heat and acoustics, but they do not establish a specific noise level, temperature or battery-life improvement without standardized independent testing.

Performance: why the X20 is not a generational speed jump

PC Gamer describes the X20 as having identical core power to the prior Xbox Ally X, with OLED, control refinements and a new cooling system added around that platform. Tom’s Guide likewise found that the value proposition weakens at $1,299 because performance did not increase in proportion to the price.

That means game results should be understood as broadly familiar Ally X performance, presented on a better panel. PC Gamer’s review includes game-specific benchmark results; those figures apply to the particular games and settings tested and should not be generalized to every title.

Price and bundle options

Should Ally X owners upgrade?

Reasons to choose the X20

  • You prioritize OLED contrast, HDR and smoother 120Hz VRR presentation.
  • The larger 7.4-inch panel is more valuable to you than a lower purchase price.
  • You want the revised grips, TMR sticks and updated bumpers and triggers.
  • You are buying new and want the newest Xbox-branded handheld design.

Reasons to keep the Ally X

  • You already own an Ally X and are satisfied with its LCD display.
  • You expect a major frame-rate increase from a new generation.
  • The $300 premium exceeds what the OLED panel and control changes are worth to you.
  • You need confirmed battery-life gains; the cited specifications do not establish an X20 battery capacity or runtime advantage.

For a new buyer, the decision is primarily about display quality, comfort and design. For an Ally X owner, the upgrade is harder to justify unless OLED HDR, the larger screen or the revised controls are central priorities.

What is still unknown

  • ASUS’s cited specifications do not state the X20’s battery capacity.
  • No independent published sales figure is established for the X20.
  • Launch reviews are early assessments and may change with firmware updates or price changes.
  • Manufacturer airflow and heatsink percentages do not by themselves prove longer battery life or quieter operation.

Verdict

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 earns its attention with a genuinely upgraded 7.4-inch OLED display, better controls and a redesigned cooling system, which explains Yoshida’s enthusiastic reaction. It does not deliver a corresponding leap in core gaming performance. At $1,299, it is best viewed as a premium screen-and-ergonomics model rather than a faster replacement for the Ally X.
