Its remit covers film and television, consumer products, live and location-based experiences, and partnerships. XP is an organizational structure. The announcement does not introduce a new movie, series, attraction, or product.
What XP is and who runs it
According to Xbox’s announcement, written by Joe Skrebels, Xbox Wire Editor-in-Chief, XP was created to consolidate work that had been handled in separate Xbox teams and to coordinate ways to extend Xbox’s game franchises into other formats. The announcement is explicit that games remain the core. In the words of the post, “Great games remain at the center of these franchises and at the heart of XBOX.” Introducing XP, Xbox Wire, October 8, 2026

Kayleen Walters is XP’s president. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s memo on the same day says Walters is moving from Mojang to take the role, and that she spent 13 years at Lucasfilm before joining Xbox, where she helped guide Star Wars across films, products, and partnerships. Sharma’s memo describes that background as the basis for the division’s approach. New Leadership Appointments and XBOX Division, Xbox Wire, October 8, 2026
The four investment areas
XP organizes its work into four named areas. Sharma’s memo gives the division’s own framing: “XP is a play on ‘Experience Points’ and formalizes four investment areas for us: XBOX PICTURES for film and television adaptations; XBOX PRODUCTS for licensing and merchandise; XBOX PARTNERSHIPS for sponsors and brand partners; and XBOX PLACES for our marquee broadcast and in-person events, theme parks, and other location-based experiences.”

Why Xbox points to Minecraft

- The XP announcement says that during Walters’s tenure, Minecraft grew from 350 million to more than 425 million units sold, and that its merchandising business became one of the top 20 globally.
- Sharma’s memo says Minecraft consumer products had more than 250 licensees and had become a multibillion-dollar business.
- Xbox says A Minecraft Movie had the biggest opening weekend ever for a video-game adaptation and finished number one at the domestic box office. Sharma’s memo describes it as the biggest film in the United States the previous year and a top-five release worldwide.
Xbox’s materials do not establish that “top 20” and “multibillion-dollar” measure the same thing, so readers should not combine them into a single revenue claim. No box-office amounts were stated in the announcement.
What changes at Mojang
Sharma’s memo also announces Maria Angelidou-Smith as CEO of Mojang and Minecraft, reporting to Sharma, with a stated start date of October 19, 2026. The memo cites her earlier role leading Facebook Groups at Meta, which it describes as reaching 1.8 billion people each month. That figure is background on her experience, not a measure of XP or Xbox audiences.

What the announcement does not include
The announcement names no new XP film or series slate, no theme-park opening, no newly signed sponsor, no merchandise release, and no project release dates. Minecraft’s film success and existing theme-park placements are cited as examples of franchise activity that predates XP. They should not be read as XP projects. Xbox also does not describe a partner intake process, submission route, or commercial program for brands or creators.
How to read future XP announcements
- Check which of the four areas a project falls under. Xbox has used these areas as its organizing framework.
- Look for named partners, release dates, or openings. The October 8 announcement contains none of these.
- Treat Minecraft figures as Xbox-reported claims unless an independent source confirms them.
- Watch the Mojang leadership transition, since Angelidou-Smith’s start date is October 19, 2026.
Where to find official Xbox merchandise now
XP’s Products area covers licensed fan goods, but the announcement does not describe any XP-specific product line. Xbox’s existing official merchandise destination is Xbox Gear, which Xbox introduced in its August 24, 2026 anniversary post with collections spanning brand essentials, Xbox history, and apparel. Celebrating 25 Years of Play, Xbox Wire, August 24, 2026 That is the place to check for current Xbox-branded items; it is not evidence that any XP-branded product exists.
