Start with the console’s capability report, then enable only the resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, ALLM, audio and accessibility features your equipment and games can actually use. A 120 Hz output does not make every game run at 120 frames per second, and system settings cannot add accessibility features that a game does not implement.
Check what your display and HDMI path support first
Before changing picture options, open Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details. This report shows which capabilities the connected display and connection path advertise. Treat it as a compatibility check, not a graphics benchmark: it tells you what the console can output through the current television, monitor, HDMI port and intermediate equipment.

Capabilities can vary by resolution and by HDMI input. A television may offer 120 Hz, HDR or variable refresh rate on one port but not another, or only at a particular resolution. If an option is missing, check the display manual, select the port identified for high-bandwidth gaming and inspect every receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or capture device between the Xbox and screen.
For troubleshooting, connect the console directly to the display and test again. On Series X, use the supplied Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. If the direct connection exposes more capabilities, the intervening equipment or its settings is limiting the signal.

Choose resolution and refresh rate deliberately
| Setting | What it controls | Use it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolution | The pixel output sent by the console | The selected value appears as supported in 4K TV details | Some displays support a higher refresh rate only at a lower resolution |
| Refresh rate | How often the console output can update, such as 60 Hz or 120 Hz | Your display and HDMI path support that rate at the chosen resolution | It does not force a game to render at the same frame rate |
| HDR | High-dynamic-range output for compatible displays and content | Your display reports HDR support and the picture looks correct after calibration | It is a picture and content feature, not a universal performance boost |
In Settings > General > TV & display options, set Resolution to a value the capability report confirms. Set Refresh rate to 120 Hz only when the console offers it for your chosen resolution and your display supports it through the selected port. If 120 Hz disappears after selecting a higher resolution, that is a limitation of the display or HDMI path rather than a console fault.
Games decide their own rendering targets. A title may offer a performance mode, quality mode or resolution mode, while another may have no such switch. The console’s 120 Hz output setting supplies a compatible signal; it cannot turn a 30-frame-per-second game into a 120-frame-per-second game.
Should you turn VRR and ALLM on for Xbox?
Variable refresh rate
VRR lets a compatible display vary its refresh timing to follow the console’s changing frame output. It can make uneven frame delivery look smoother, but the benefit depends on the display, the game and the supported VRR range. Enable it in the Xbox display options when the capability report confirms support, then compare demanding games with VRR on and off.

VRR does not guarantee that every stutter disappears, nor does it raise a game’s maximum frame rate. A display with a narrow VRR range, an incompatible HDMI device or a title with severe performance problems may show little improvement.

Auto Low Latency Mode
ALLM allows the console to signal a compatible television to switch to its low-latency or game mode. Turn it on when your display supports ALLM and you want that automatic behavior. Some televisions expose their own game-mode controls, so check the television’s information panel and compare controller response in the games you play.
Configure HDR without assuming it is always better
Xbox supports HDR10 and Auto HDR on compatible hardware and content. In the display options, confirm that HDR is reported as available, then use the console’s HDR calibration tool if it is offered. Follow the on-screen pattern instructions while adjusting the television’s brightness and tone-mapping controls according to its manual.
HDR can look washed out, too dark or overly bright when a television is in the wrong picture mode, when an HDMI port does not support the required format or when its tone mapping conflicts with the console calibration. Judge the result with games and video you actually use. If SDR content looks better with HDR disabled, leaving it off is a valid choice for that display.
Use each game’s own performance mode
A console-wide setting cannot select a game’s internal resolution, quality or performance mode. When a title offers those choices, read its labels rather than assuming that “performance” or “quality” has the same outcome everywhere. Performance modes commonly prioritize responsiveness or a higher frame-rate target; quality modes may prioritize resolution, lighting or visual detail, but the exact trade-off is title-specific.

Change one option at a time and play the same section for long enough to notice motion clarity, image detail and input response. If a game offers a 120-frame-per-second option, it may require the console to be set to 120 Hz and the display to support that signal, but the game still controls whether that mode is available.
Match Xbox audio output to your equipment
Open Settings > General > Volume & audio output. Use the audio testing or details view when it is available to see what the connected HDMI system or headset reports as supported. If the screen shows unexpected capabilities, reset the audio settings and test again after reconnecting the equipment.
| Connection | Relevant Xbox choice | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Television or receiver over HDMI | Bitstream out and a supported home-theater format | Choose the format your receiver or display explicitly supports; verify that the receiver, not just the television, is decoding it |
| Headset | A supported headset or spatial-audio format | Compare Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos or DTS:X only when the headset path supports the option and it helps your listening |
| Basic television speakers | Uncompressed or the television’s supported format | Avoid sending a bitstream that the television cannot decode |
Xbox lists Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X as spatial-audio options. None is universally best, and a paid format is not mandatory. Select the option that your HDMI receiver or headphones support, then test dialogue, positional effects and volume in a familiar game. Headset processing can sound different from television or receiver processing, so configure the active output rather than an unused device.

Narrator and Magnifier
Xbox’s accessibility settings include Narrator, a screen reader that reads interface elements such as text and buttons aloud. Magnifier enlarges the console screen so text and images are easier to see. These are system navigation tools; a game’s own menus and gameplay behavior can still determine what is announced or enlarged.

High contrast and color filters
High contrast helps distinguish items and text while navigating Xbox’s built-in apps and experiences. Color filters alter color presentation to help separate colors that are difficult to distinguish. Xbox states that color filters do not affect performance and apply across games, movies, apps and menus, rather than only in a single title. Because filters change the appearance of all content, test them with the games and video you use most.
Night mode
Night mode lets you customize the blue-light filter and related console, controller and screen behavior. Use its schedule and intensity controls to reduce evening glare without assuming that one setting suits every room or visual need.
Captions and chat tools
Closed captions are available for supported discs and many on-demand services, but they do not automatically caption every game. Check a game’s own audio and subtitle menu. Xbox also offers speech-to-text for transcribing Party Chat or in-game chat, and text-to-speech for speaking text you type to other players. Availability depends on the chat context and the title or service involved.
Configure input for motor and dexterity needs
Xbox Controller Assist can combine two controllers so they operate as one. This can let a second person provide a stick, trigger or button input without taking control away from the primary player. In Xbox Accessories, supported Xbox controllers and some third-party controllers can have their button layouts customized. The available controls depend on the connected model.

Wired USB keyboards and mice can work for console navigation in supported cases and in selected games and apps. Support is not universal, so check the individual title before buying hardware or redesigning your setup.
For players who need external switches, mounts or alternative joysticks, the Xbox Adaptive Controller is an optional hub for compatible accessories. Xbox also presents the Xbox Adaptive Joystick as a controller companion. These devices are needs-led choices, not requirements for using Xbox accessibility features; confirm physical fit, port compatibility and the controls a particular game accepts.
System accessibility cannot replace game-level options
Console settings can improve the interface and output, but they cannot add missing subtitles, remapping, difficulty choices, audio cues, motion controls or photosensitivity options to a game. Before purchasing or starting a title, inspect its Xbox Store accessibility tags for the features that matter to you.

Quick Recap
A practical setup order
- Record the baseline: open 4K TV details and note the resolutions, refresh rates, HDR, VRR and ALLM capabilities reported for the current HDMI path.
- Remove the bottleneck: select the appropriate HDMI port, update the display’s input mode if required and connect Series X directly to the display when an intermediary device hides capabilities.
- Set output: choose a supported resolution and, only when supported at that resolution, 120 Hz. Enable HDR, VRR and ALLM individually so you can identify which feature changes the experience.
- Calibrate the picture: run HDR calibration when available and adjust the television for the room in which you play.
- Select game modes: use each game’s own performance, quality or resolution choice according to whether responsiveness or visual detail matters more for that title.
- Configure audio: run the audio testing/details view, select a format supported by the active HDMI or headset path and test familiar dialogue and positional sounds.
- Apply accessibility tools: enable Narrator, Magnifier, contrast, color, night mode, captions, chat transcription or controller changes one at a time, then keep only the options that solve a specific problem.
- Verify inside each game: check subtitles, remapping, difficulty, motion and audio-cue options because system settings cannot supply missing game features.
Troubleshoot common results
- 120 Hz is unavailable: verify the selected resolution, HDMI port and cable; bypass a receiver, switch or soundbar and rerun 4K TV details.
- VRR or ALLM is missing: confirm support on both the display model and the exact HDMI input. Some displays limit these features to specific resolutions.
- HDR looks wrong: check the television’s HDR picture mode, rerun console calibration and compare with HDR disabled to determine whether the display’s tone mapping is the problem.
- Surround or spatial audio fails: use the audio details screen, select a format the active receiver or headset reports, then retest after reconnecting the device.
- Captions or remapping do not appear: look in the game or service’s own settings and check its Store accessibility tags; a console-wide option cannot create an unsupported feature.
- Color filters help menus but hurt a game: filters apply system-wide, so switch them off for that session or use the game’s own color-blind settings when available.
