Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S can run most Xbox One games, plus a selected catalog of Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Backward compatibility is free for eligible games you already own. Digital purchases appear in your library, while supported physical discs require a Series X with an optical drive; the disc must remain inserted after installation. Xbox Series S is digital-only.
Compatibility is decided title by title, especially for Xbox 360 and original Xbox releases. Xbox’s live backward-compatible catalog is the authority for an individual game, and its entries also show whether features such as HDR or FPS Boost are available.

Which Xbox generations work on Series X|S?
Xbox’s backward-compatibility program covers three generations, but coverage is not identical across them. Xbox says most Xbox One games can be played on Series X|S and describes Series X as compatible with thousands of games across Xbox generations. Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is selective: only games in the official catalog work.
Recommended Free Tools
| Generation | Digital ownership | Physical-disc use |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Most Xbox One games are playable. Eligible games you own appear in your library or Ready to Install. | A supported disc installs on a Series X with an optical drive. The disc remains the play license and must stay inserted. |
| Xbox 360 | Only games in the backward-compatible catalog are supported. | Selected discs work on a Series X with an optical drive; installation downloads the game to the console. |
| Original Xbox | Only catalog-listed games are supported, with legacy online and achievement limits. | Selected discs work on a Series X with an optical drive; the disc must remain inserted to play. |
Xbox One games
Most Xbox One titles are the easiest candidates. Sign in with the account that owns the digital game and look in the console’s game library or Ready to Install area. The fact that a game runs on Xbox One does not guarantee that every mode or enhancement is identical on Series X|S, so check the catalog entry for title-specific notes.

Xbox 360 games
You can play an Xbox 360 game on Series X|S only when Xbox lists that title as backward compatible. The catalog’s Xbox 360 filter is the reliable way to check. A digital copy you own can be installed on either console; a supported disc can be used only with a Series X that has an optical drive.
Original Xbox games
Original Xbox support is also selective. Catalog-listed games can run digitally on Series X|S, and selected original discs can be used on an optical-drive Series X. These versions retain important legacy limitations: original Xbox Xbox Live multiplayer and original in-game marketplaces are unavailable through backward compatibility, and original Xbox games do not receive Xbox achievements.
How to check whether a specific game is compatible
Because the list can change and Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is selective, check the title before buying a used disc or assuming an old digital purchase will install.
- Open Xbox’s official backward-compatible games catalog.
- Search for the game by name, then use the generation filter for Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox.
- Review the title entry for feature labels such as HDR or FPS Boost. A compatible game may have no enhancement, one enhancement or several.
- For a digital game, sign in to the account that owns it and check the console’s library or Ready to Install list.
- For a disc game, confirm that you have a Series X with an optical drive. Insert the disc only after confirming that the title appears in the supported catalog.
Xbox’s support material links to excluded games, but that page is not a dependable substitute for the live catalog. Use the current catalog and your console library for a specific title rather than relying on an old static list.
Can you play old discs on Series X?
Series X with an optical drive
Yes, when the disc’s game is supported. Insert the Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc. The console downloads and installs the compatible game to storage; the disc is still required in the drive whenever you launch it. The disc acts as proof of ownership, not as the data source for the entire installation.
This applies to a Series X model that actually includes an optical drive. Xbox also sells an all-digital Series X edition, which cannot read discs.

Series S
Series S has no disc drive. It cannot install or authenticate an Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox game from a physical disc, even when that title is listed as compatible. You need a digital entitlement for Series S.

The documented hardware distinction for this question is physical media. Digital backward-compatible games use the same title eligibility rules on Series X|S; the catalog, not the console name alone, determines whether an Xbox 360 or original Xbox game is supported.
| Console version | Digital backward-compatible games | Physical discs |
|---|---|---|
| Series X with optical drive | Xbox One games plus selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games from the catalog | Supported Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs can install; the disc must remain inserted |
| All-digital Series X | Digital Xbox One games plus selected digital Xbox 360 and original Xbox games | No optical drive, so physical discs cannot be used |
| Series S | Digital Xbox One games plus selected digital Xbox 360 and original Xbox games | No physical-disc support |
What improvements do compatible games receive?
Backward compatibility is not automatically a remaster. Depending on the title, Xbox may provide faster loading, higher resolution (up to 4K for selected games), steadier frame rates, Auto HDR or FPS Boost. These features are assigned per game; a title can be compatible without receiving any of them.
The catalog reports more than 500,000 hours of testing by Xbox, with the catalog accessed October 13, 2026. That is Xbox’s stated testing figure, not an independent guarantee that every mode, display or play session will perform identically.
Auto HDR
Auto HDR can add a high-dynamic-range presentation to supported games when the console and display are configured for HDR. It is a catalog-level feature, not a setting that appears for every backward-compatible title.
FPS Boost
FPS Boost can raise or stabilize frame rates for selected games. Check the individual catalog entry; enabling it for one title says nothing about another game in the same series.

Resolution and loading
Some titles benefit from higher resolution or faster loading on Series X|S hardware. Xbox describes up to 4K for selected games, so do not treat 4K output or a specific loading time as universal.
Original Xbox features that do not carry over
Backward compatibility preserves the game, not every service that surrounded it on the original console. Xbox states that original Xbox online services and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through the backward-compatible version. Original Xbox games also do not have Xbox achievements.
Offline multiplayer and system link can still work when the original game supported those modes. Whether a particular multiplayer option works therefore depends on the game’s original design, not on a modern Xbox network service being restored.
Backward compatibility and Smart Delivery are different
Smart Delivery is a separate feature for games whose developer or publisher implements it. Xbox describes it as providing the best available version of a supported game for the Xbox console being used, without an additional purchase when that supported version becomes available.
Smart Delivery does not mean that every Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox title runs on Series X|S. It also does not make every disc usable: a physical disc can participate only when its developer or publisher chooses to implement Smart Delivery and the console can read that disc. Check the game’s own product information as well as the backward-compatible catalog.

Xbox Wire says a USB 3.1 hard drive or solid-state drive can be connected to Series X|S, and compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games can be played directly from that external storage. Xbox’s 2020 storage primer describes the dedicated Storage Expansion Card as matching the internal SSD’s performance. These are capacity and management options, not compatibility requirements.
Common problems and the correct fix
The game does not appear in Ready to Install
Confirm that you are signed in to the account that owns the digital license. Then search the live catalog by title and generation. If the game is an Xbox 360 or original Xbox release and is absent from the catalog, it is not supported through this program.
The disc starts downloading but will not launch
Verify that the console is a Series X with an optical drive and that the exact disc title is listed as compatible. Leave the disc inserted after installation; removing it removes the license check.
A Series S will not read an old game disc
This is expected behavior. Series S is digital-only. Use a digital entitlement or a Series X model with an optical drive for a supported physical copy.
The game runs, but HDR or FPS Boost is missing
Compatibility and enhancements are separate. Recheck the catalog entry for that title’s feature labels. A game can be fully playable without Auto HDR, FPS Boost or a higher-resolution mode.
Online play from an original Xbox game is unavailable
Original Xbox online services and in-game marketplaces are not provided by the backward-compatible version. If the original title included offline multiplayer or system link, those modes may still function according to the game’s original support.
What to remember before buying an old game
- Check the live catalog before purchasing a used Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc.
- Choose a Series X with an optical drive if you plan to use physical games; an all-digital Series X and every Series S model require digital ownership.
- Keep a supported disc inserted whenever you play its installed version.
- Expect enhancements to vary by title, and treat backward compatibility as different from a full remaster.
- Do not assume original Xbox online services, marketplaces or achievements are available.
Xbox’s official Backward Compatible Games FAQ summarizes the program this way: “Xbox Series X|S Backward Compatibility is free and allows you to play select Xbox 360, Original Xbox games, and Xbox One games you already own on Xbox Series X|S.” For the current answer about any one game, use the catalog and the ownership method you intend to use.
