Start by separating two very different faults: a console with no signs of power, and a console that powers on but sends no picture to the TV. Press the Xbox Series X power button while it is connected to a power source, then observe the power indicator and fan. If both show normal activity, troubleshoot the HDMI and TV-input path. If there is no indicator or fan activity, the symptom confirms only that startup is failing—not that the power-supply unit (PSU) is defective. Microsoft lists a replaceable PSU for supported Series X units, but replacement should follow a diagnosis and a realistic assessment of your tools and repair skills.
First determine whether the Xbox is actually powering on
“Won’t turn on” is often used for two separate situations. In the first, the console does not appear to start: there is no power indicator and no audible fan operation. In the second, the console starts but the television remains blank. Those cases require different checks, so do not begin by buying an internal power-supply part based only on a black screen.

| What you observe | What it establishes | Next path |
|---|---|---|
| No power indicator and no fan activity after pressing the button | There is a startup or power symptom, but no particular component has been proven to have failed. | Repeat the documented power-on observation once, then arrange appropriate diagnosis or service if the symptom remains. |
| Power indicator works and the fan runs normally, but the TV is blank | The console shows signs of being on; the display path is the more relevant place to investigate. | Check the HDMI connection, TV input, and display settings. |
| Fan runs with unusual noise | Microsoft’s service guide treats normal fan operation as one of the observations to check; unusual noise is a reason not to assume normal startup. | Record the behavior and seek qualified service rather than inferring a specific failed part. |
| An image appears after the HDMI path is corrected | The console was not a complete no-power failure. | Continue using the direct display connection and review display settings if a resolution or 4K option is unavailable. |
Microsoft’s documented check is deliberately observational: connect the Xbox to a power source, press the power button, and check the indicator light and fan. It is not a component-level diagnostic. There is no published basis here for assigning a failure rate to the PSU, motherboard, button, cable, or any other part.

- Connect the console to a power source. Make sure the Series X is connected before pressing its power button. The service guide describes the check in that order.
- Press the console’s power button. Watch and listen rather than relying only on the television.
- Check the power indicator. Note whether it illuminates and whether it stays on during the attempted startup.
- Check the fan. Note whether it starts and runs without unusual noise.
- Write down the exact behavior. “No light,” “light but no picture,” and “fan starts with unusual noise” point to different next steps. This record is also useful when you contact a service provider.
These observations tell you whether the console is showing signs of operation. They do not identify a failed PSU. The available official guidance does not provide a complete consumer decision tree for outlet testing, cable-reset timing, beep patterns, blink-code interpretation, startup button combinations, or recovery procedures, so avoid presenting those actions as Microsoft instructions.

If the Xbox turns on but the TV is blank
A working indicator and normally running fan move the problem away from “no power” and toward the display chain: the HDMI cable, the selected TV input, an intermediate receiver or switch, or the console’s display settings.
Use the supplied HDMI cable and a direct connection
Xbox Wire’s launch guidance says the Series X shipped with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Use that cable when available, and test a direct connection from the Xbox to the television. If an AV receiver, soundbar, capture device, HDMI switch, or other equipment sits between the console and TV, bypass it for the test. A direct path removes those devices from the first diagnosis.
Select the correct television input
Use the television’s input control to select the HDMI port receiving the Xbox signal. A console can be fully powered while the TV displays a blank screen because it is set to another input. This check concerns the display path; it cannot restore a console that has no indicator or fan activity.

Xbox Wire also describes display-setting checks for video cases such as an unavailable 4K option or a blank-screen error. Menu names can change with Xbox system software, and the article was published on November 6, 2020, so treat its interface wording as historical Xbox guidance rather than a guarantee that every current label is identical. The underlying sequence remains useful: establish a direct Xbox-to-TV connection, verify the TV input, and then review the console’s video configuration.

When an HDMI check is not enough
If the indicator and fan behave normally but no direct-TV connection produces an image, keep the symptom classified as “powers on, no display” instead of “dead console.” Give the service provider that distinction, along with the cable and connection arrangement you tested. It prevents a display fault from being treated as proof of an internal PSU failure.
If there is no indicator or fan activity
After the documented power-on observation, a Series X with no light and no fan activity has a genuine startup symptom. That still does not identify the failed component. The official material available for this topic does not establish that a PSU is the usual cause, nor does it publish a consumer test that proves PSU failure without opening the console.
Do not treat a black screen as evidence of a PSU fault
A black screen by itself is compatible with a display-path problem. Only classify the console as apparently unpowered when the console-side observations—indicator and fan—also show no activity. Keeping those categories separate is the most important diagnostic decision you can make without specialized equipment.
Do not infer a repair from a part listing
Microsoft’s service-parts list names a Series X Power Supply Unit with part number EP2-18849. The existence of that listing means a supported service-part path exists; it does not mean that buying the part will fix every no-start symptom. A no-power report can have causes other than the PSU, and the source material does not provide a prevalence ranking.

When a PSU replacement is relevant
Consider the EP2-18849 PSU only when the console has been appropriately diagnosed and the replacement is compatible with the exact device. Microsoft’s guide covers Xbox Series X Model 1882 units with a 14-digit serial number. The model and serial labels are on the back right of the console. Verify those details and the part compatibility before purchasing anything.
Check repair readiness before opening the console
Microsoft advises considering four questions before self-repair:
- Does the device support the repair you intend to perform?
- Is the replacement part likely to correct the diagnosed fault?
- Do you have the necessary tools?
- Do you have the practical skill and confidence to complete the work safely?
If any answer is no, Microsoft points users toward an authorized service provider or an out-of-warranty repair order. That option is especially important when the diagnosis is only “it will not start” and no component has been confirmed.

Understand the mains-voltage hazard
The internal PSU connects to AC mains. Microsoft’s service instructions include a leakage test after reassembly. That test is a safety requirement in the repair procedure, not an optional finishing step. Internal power-supply work is therefore not a casual first troubleshooting exercise; it is an appropriately equipped repair task.

Do not skip compatibility verification
Use the model and serial information from the console, compare it with the service documentation, and confirm that EP2-18849 is the correct part for that unit before ordering. A part number without model verification is not enough. If you cannot make that match confidently, use authorized service instead of opening the console.
Choose the next action by symptom and capability
| Situation | Best next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Indicator and fan operate; TV is blank | Connect the Xbox directly to the TV with the supplied Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, select the correct input, and review display settings. | The evidence points first to the display path, not to a proven power failure. |
| No indicator and no fan activity | Record the failed power-on observation and seek diagnosis or service. | The symptom confirms unsuccessful startup but does not identify the PSU. |
| Model/serial details do not match the service documentation | Do not order a PSU until compatibility is confirmed. | Microsoft’s listed part and guide apply to specified Series X hardware. |
| Likely part fault but no suitable tools, skills, or confidence | Use an authorized provider or an out-of-warranty repair order. | Opening an AC-connected PSU and completing the required leakage test demands appropriate repair capability. |
| You are considering a PSU solely because the console does not start | Stop and obtain a diagnosis first. | A no-start symptom alone is not evidence that EP2-18849 will solve the problem. |
Common mistakes that prolong the diagnosis
Calling every blank screen a power failure
Check the console’s indicator and fan before concluding that it is dead. If those operate, use the HDMI and TV-input path. This prevents an unnecessary internal repair attempt.
Routing the first test through extra equipment
Receivers, soundbars, switches, and capture devices add possible points of failure. The direct Xbox-to-TV test recommended by Xbox Wire gives you a simpler baseline.
Buying a PSU before confirming the model
EP2-18849 is an identifier for a documented service part, not a universal Series X fix. Confirm Model 1882 and the 14-digit serial-number requirement described by Microsoft, then verify compatibility.

Attempting internal work without the final safety test
Reassembly is not the end of the procedure. Microsoft’s instructions call for a leakage test because the internal PSU is connected to AC mains. If you cannot perform the complete procedure safely, do not perform the repair.
Relying on undocumented button combinations or error-code claims
The official material available here does not establish a current, complete no-power sequence for reset timing, beep meanings, blink codes, or recovery combinations. Do not present an internet tip as an official diagnosis, and do not let an unverified code interpretation replace the indicator-and-fan observation.
Prepare useful information for service
A precise symptom report can shorten the diagnosis. Include:
- Whether the power indicator illuminates.
- Whether the fan starts and whether it sounds normal.
- Whether the TV shows an image at any point.
- Whether you tested a direct Xbox-to-TV connection.
- Which HDMI cable you used, including the supplied Ultra High Speed cable if available.
- The TV input selected during the test.
- The console’s model and 14-digit serial number from the back-right label.
- Any unusual noise observed during the attempted startup.
Describe what you observed rather than naming a part you have not tested. “No indicator or fan after pressing the button” is more useful to a technician than “the PSU is bad.”
What the available guidance can—and cannot—tell you
Microsoft documents the power-on observations, Model 1882 and serial-number identification, repair-readiness considerations, and the PSU service-part listing. Xbox Wire documents the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, direct-to-TV testing, input selection, and display-setting checks in its November 6, 2020 article.
Those sources do not publish a current consumer no-power decision tree, a failure-rate statistic, a success rate for PSU replacement, or standard repair pricing. They also do not establish which component fails most often. Any claim that one cause is “usually” responsible, or that a specific reset sequence will repair your console, would go beyond the documented evidence.
Quick Recap
A concise decision tree
- Press the power button while the Xbox is connected to a power source.
- Does the indicator light work and does the fan run normally?
- Yes: treat the case as a display problem first. Use the supplied Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, connect directly to the TV, select the correct input, and review display settings.
- No: treat it as an unresolved startup/power symptom, not a confirmed PSU failure.
- If internal repair is being considered, verify Model 1882, the 14-digit serial number, and EP2-18849 compatibility.
- If you lack the required tools, skills, confidence, or leakage-test capability, use an authorized service provider or an out-of-warranty repair order.
