Xbox Series S is the better-value choice for an all-digital library and a 1440p-oriented display. Both are Series X|S consoles, and the evidence available does not support saying that upcoming first-party games will generally be exclusive to Series X rather than Series S.
The decision in one table
“Better for upcoming first-party games” does not necessarily mean “gets more games.” The first question is whether a particular title is announced for Xbox Series X|S. If it is, both consoles belong to the supported generation; the meaningful differences are usually image resolution, storage, disc support, and the settings a developer chooses for each model.

What “upcoming first-party games” actually means
First-party publishing and console hardware are separate questions. A game can be made by an Xbox-owned studio yet also be announced for PC, cloud streaming, or another console. Conversely, a title announced for Series X|S can be optimized differently on each model without creating a separate game library.

Use a title’s current official platform listing as the authority. A showcase trailer, an older release window, or a retailer page can become outdated. This is particularly important for games still in development: platforms, dates, and technical targets can change before launch.

What Xbox announced for Fable
In its Developer Direct recap published January 22, 2026, Xbox said Fable was expected in autumn 2026 and listed Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Game Pass Ultimate. That is the announcement as described on that date, not a guarantee that the window or platform list cannot change. Before buying a console for Fable, check the game’s current Xbox listing and release status.
What the June 2026 showcase does—and does not—prove
Xbox’s June 7, 2026 Games Showcase recap discussed first-party announcements including Senua, Spyro: A Realm Beyond, DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations, Fable, Halo: Campaign Evolved, Minecraft Dungeons II, State of Decay 3, and Clockwork Revolution. The recap identifies Series X|S for some announcements and says previously announced multiplatform releases will remain multiplatform.
That produces a title-by-title platform picture rather than a promise of a Series X-only future. Some games may also be announced for PC, cloud, or other consoles. Treat every game’s current listing as provisional until release and do not infer exclusivity from the console’s name.

Resolution: “True 4K” versus a 1440p design target
Xbox describes Series X as offering native or “True 4K” gaming and Series S as designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling. These are manufacturer-level targets, not a promise that every title renders at a fixed resolution. Modern console games commonly use dynamic resolution, performance and quality modes, reconstruction, or other scaling techniques.
On a 4K television, Series X gives a developer more room to target a sharper native image or a higher-resolution quality mode. Series S can still output a 4K signal to a 4K display, but the game may be rendered internally at a lower resolution and upscaled. On a 1080p or 1440p monitor, the visual difference can be less important than your viewing distance and the game’s settings.

Resolution also does not determine frame rate by itself. Xbox describes both consoles as supporting up to 120 frames per second in supported content and with a compatible display. “Up to” matters: a game must include a high-frame-rate mode, and that mode may reduce resolution or visual effects. Neither console guarantees 120 FPS for every first-party release.
Processing headroom and the 12-teraflop versus 4-teraflop figures
Xbox’s comparison material lists 12 teraflops for Series X and 4 teraflops for Series S. Those are manufacturer hardware specifications, not independent benchmarks and not a prediction that every game will run at three times the frame rate or resolution on Series X. Developers can spend the available headroom on resolution, lighting, effects, texture quality, draw distance, or steadier performance.
For a buyer, the practical interpretation is simple: Series X is designed with more graphics headroom for a 4K-oriented presentation, while Series S is designed around a smaller, 1440p-oriented target. The final result depends on the title’s code, update history, selected mode, and display.
Disc drives and digital ownership
Series S is entirely digital. It cannot read physical game discs or movie discs, so a boxed copy, a borrowed disc, or an existing disc collection cannot be used on it. You need a digital purchase, a subscription entitlement, or another supported digital license.
Series X is not one single configuration. Xbox lists disc-drive models as well as an all-digital Series X. A listing that says “Series X” is not enough if discs matter; confirm whether the exact model includes an optical drive. A disc-drive Series X can be useful for second-hand games, physical editions, or playing compatible discs from an existing collection, subject to the game’s compatibility and licensing rules.

Storage: capacity matters more as games grow
Xbox lists Series S in 512GB and 1TB configurations and Series X in 1TB and 2TB configurations, with availability varying by market and model. The usable space shown to the player is lower than the advertised capacity because the operating system and system-reserved data occupy part of the drive.
Upcoming first-party games can be large, and installing several current-generation titles at once can fill the smaller configuration quickly. A 512GB Series S therefore requires more active storage management than a 1TB or 2TB model. The right comparison is not only the console’s purchase price but also how many games you expect to keep installed.
Both consoles support the dedicated Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card. Xbox also references USB external hard-drive support. Before buying an external drive, check current Xbox compatibility guidance and the specific use case: storage that archives games is not necessarily equivalent to the high-speed expansion card used for native Series X|S titles.
Will upcoming games run on Series S?
If a game is announced for Xbox Series X|S, the publisher is identifying the generation rather than promising identical visual settings on both models. Series S versions may use a lower internal resolution, reduced effects, different performance modes, or other adjustments to meet the console’s hardware target. Those changes are normal optimization, not evidence that the game is a different release.
There is no evidence in the cited Xbox announcements that upcoming first-party games will generally be limited to Series X. The safer rule is to verify the platform line for each title. If it says “Xbox Series X|S,” both consoles are included unless a later update changes that listing.

What to check for a specific game
- Platform line: Confirm that the listing explicitly includes Xbox Series X|S rather than only Xbox One, PC, cloud, or another platform.
- Release status: Distinguish a firm release date from an estimated window such as “autumn 2026.”
- Performance modes: Look for the developer’s description of quality, performance, resolution, or frame-rate modes.
- Storage requirement: Check the current install size after launch updates, not only the size shown in an early preview.
- Online or subscription requirements: Verify any multiplayer, cloud, or subscription conditions separately from console compatibility.
Shared features mean the core generation is the same
Xbox presents Series X and Series S as members of the same Series X|S generation. Both support features such as Quick Resume and backwards compatibility with supported earlier Xbox games. Both can take advantage of up to 120-FPS output when the game and display support it.
Quick Resume is a convenience feature, not a graphics setting: it lets supported games resume from a saved suspended state. Compatibility is also title-specific. A game that runs through backwards compatibility does not automatically gain a native Series X|S version or the same visual modes as a new-generation release.
Shared platform features make Series S viable for players whose main concern is access to the same announced first-party library. The hardware differences become more visible when a game offers demanding visual modes, when you use a large 4K screen, or when you need physical media and substantial internal storage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How price should influence the decision
Xbox states that pricing differs, and the official pages reviewed do not provide a reliable same-market, same-date comparison suitable for a universal price claim. The Australian comparison page is market-specific, while the Series S product page is US English; do not transfer a figure from one region to another.
Compare the exact local configurations available on the day you buy. A lower-priced 512GB Series S may become less economical if you immediately need an expansion card. A 1TB Series S can change that calculation. Likewise, a disc-drive Series X may have a higher purchase price but can reduce game costs for buyers who use used physical games or trade-ins. Those are ownership patterns, not guaranteed savings.

Calculate the complete setup
- Record the local price for the exact console model, storage capacity, and included accessories.
- Add any expansion storage you realistically expect to need for native Series X|S games.
- Decide whether you will buy digital games, physical games, or a mixture; Series S permits only the first option.
- Check your display. A 4K television makes Series X’s resolution target more relevant, while a 1080p or 1440p screen may reduce the visible benefit.
- Include any subscription or multiplayer costs that apply to the way you intend to play.
Choose Series X if these priorities describe you
- You want Xbox’s native or “True 4K” target and have a 4K television where sharper output is easy to appreciate.
- You want to buy, borrow, resell, or keep physical games and films, and you are selecting a disc-drive configuration.
- You expect to keep many large games installed and prefer the 1TB or 2TB configurations listed for Series X.
- You want more graphics headroom for demanding quality modes and are willing to pay the local price for it.
- You want one console that can accommodate both digital purchases and compatible physical media.
Choose Series S if these priorities describe you
- You buy games digitally and do not need an optical drive.
- You use a 1080p or 1440p display, or you accept that a 4K television may show an upscaled rather than native image in many games.
- You want the lowest-cost entry into the Series X|S generation in your market.
- You are comfortable managing storage on a 512GB model or choosing the 1TB configuration where available.
- Your main question is whether you can play announced Series X|S first-party games, rather than whether each one has the highest-resolution mode.
A buying checklist before you order
- Identify the model: Confirm Series X or Series S, storage capacity, color or edition if relevant, and whether a Series X listing is disc-drive or all-digital.
- Verify local availability: Check the current retailer or Xbox listing for your country. Do not reuse an Australian price or a US product assumption in another market.
- Match the console to the display: Note your television or monitor’s resolution, refresh rate, HDMI features, and viewing distance.
- Review the games you actually want: Open each title’s current official page and confirm Series X|S support, release status, and any announced modes.
- Plan storage: Estimate how many large games you keep installed and compare the internal capacity with the cost of a compatible expansion card.
- Decide how you acquire games: If even a few essential purchases are physical discs, Series S is not suitable for those copies.
- Recheck before payment: Release schedules, platform lists, stock, and prices can change after a showcase announcement.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming Series X has exclusive games that Series S cannot run
Do not infer a separate first-party library from the hardware tier. Xbox announcements list Series X|S together for some titles, and the June 2026 recap says previously announced multiplatform games will remain multiplatform. Check the individual game’s current listing instead.
Treating a resolution target as a fixed output
“True 4K” and “1440p” describe Xbox’s product positioning. They do not mean every scene, mode, or game renders at that exact resolution or at a fixed frame rate.
Buying the wrong Series X configuration
An all-digital Series X does not provide disc playback. Confirm the optical-drive specification in the exact listing if physical media is part of your plan.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Comparing advertised capacity with usable space
The operating system uses part of the internal drive. Compare the practical room left for games and updates, and consider expansion before the drive becomes a daily constraint.
Using an old announcement as a release guarantee
A January 2026 release window or a June showcase platform list records what Xbox announced at that time. It is not proof that a game has shipped or that the schedule has not changed.
Final recommendation
Buy Series X when your decision is driven by 4K-oriented image quality, physical media, or larger storage configurations. Buy Series S when digital-only access, a 1440p target, and a lower entry cost matter more than those benefits. For upcoming first-party games, neither console is a safe shortcut to a larger exclusive library: verify each title’s current Series X|S listing, then choose the model whose resolution, storage, and ownership trade-offs fit your setup.
