No proven ping advantage. Xbox lists the same dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and 1Gbps Ethernet for Series X and Series S, and the official specifications do not establish that Series X delivers lower online latency. Series X has more graphics and resolution headroom, but a game’s frame rate and visual settings are separate from the quality of its network connection.
Do Series X and Series S have different online performance?
For the network hardware Microsoft lists, they are alike: both consoles have dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and a 1Gbps Ethernet port. That does not mean every player will experience identical connections. Wi-Fi conditions, router placement, network congestion, internet service, game servers and the route between a home network and a server can all affect play. But the listed specifications provide no basis for choosing Series X on the expectation of lower ping. Xbox’s console comparison does not publish a controlled head-to-head ping result.

Both models can connect over Ethernet. A wired connection is an option on either console; it is not exclusive to Series X or a guaranteed fix for latency. If you are troubleshooting, trying Ethernet can help determine whether your Wi-Fi connection is contributing to a problem, but it cannot control server conditions or other parts of the connection.
How graphics and frame rate affect multiplayer
Series X is the more capable console for resolution and graphics headroom. That may matter in a particular game if its Series X version offers a higher resolution, a steadier frame rate or other visual options. What a player actually gets depends on the game and its available modes. Those rendering differences should not be described as a networking advantage: a higher frame rate is not the same thing as lower ping.

What “up to 120 FPS” means
Xbox lists support for up to 120 frames per second on both Series X and Series S. “Up to” describes a console capability, not a guarantee that every game—or every multiplayer mode—runs at 120 FPS on both systems. The game must support the relevant mode, and the display must be capable of showing the higher refresh rate. Check the target game’s current modes and requirements, as well as your display, before treating 120 FPS as a deciding factor. Xbox’s comparison page and the Microsoft Store Series S specifications describe the capability and its conditions.
A dated example: Gears 5
In its 2020 launch-era announcement, Xbox Wire said Gears 5’s Versus multiplayer mode supported 120 frames per second on Series X|S, while separately describing 4K HDR visuals for Series X. This is an example for that game and announcement, not evidence that all multiplayer titles run at 120 FPS on both consoles today. Xbox Wire’s Gears 5 announcement is the relevant source.

Which console should you choose for multiplayer?
| What matters to you | Series X | Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Listed network hardware | Dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and 1Gbps Ethernet, according to Xbox’s comparison. | The same listed Wi-Fi and Ethernet interfaces. |
| Maximum listed frame-rate capability | Up to 120 FPS; the game and display must support the mode. | Up to 120 FPS; the game and display must support the mode. |
| Graphics and resolution | More graphics and resolution headroom; results vary by game. | Lower-resolution positioning and potentially different game settings; results vary by game. |
| Disc and storage considerations | Some configurations include a disc drive. Expansion-card support is shared. | Digital-only. Expansion-card support is shared. |
Choose Series X if the higher resolution or graphics options matter on your display and in the games you play. Choose Series S if its price and compact, digital-only design suit you and the specific multiplayer games you care about perform acceptably on it. For a game-specific decision, compare that title’s current modes rather than assuming one console has a universal multiplayer advantage. Microsoft’s developer certification requirements say titles targeting a console generation must support the full family, but that does not guarantee identical performance modes on each model. Microsoft’s certification requirements provide family-support context.
