Choose Series X if you want Xbox’s true-4K positioning, a disc drive for other games or UHD Blu-ray, or a higher-capacity model. Choose Series S if you want a disc-free console positioned for 1440p and prefer the lower-tier system. Neither choice is a proven GTA 6 performance winner: official sources do not specify the game’s resolution, frame rate, graphics settings, or comparative performance on either console.
Can Xbox Series S play GTA 6?
Yes. Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for Xbox Series X|S and gives November 19, 2026 as its current coming date. That platform listing includes both consoles; it does not promise identical visual quality or performance. Rockstar’s GTA 6 page is the source for the current platform and date information.

What is actually different between Series X and Series S?
Xbox positions Series X for true 4K gaming and Series S for 1440p, with Series S able to upscale to 4K. Those are general console descriptions, not confirmed GTA 6 output resolutions. The published hardware figures and model configurations are useful for understanding the tiers, but cannot predict how this particular game will perform.
| Feature | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox-stated display positioning | True 4K | 1440p; can upscale to 4K |
| GPU figures listed by Xbox | 12 TFLOPS, 52 CUs at 1.825 GHz | 4 TFLOPS, 20 CUs at 1.565 GHz |
| Drive on cited configuration | 4K UHD Blu-ray drive on the disc-equipped model | No optical drive |
| Example capacities on Xbox’s comparison page | 1TB for the cited disc-drive configuration; other capacities are also listed | 512GB for the cited configuration; other capacities are also listed |
These figures come from Xbox’s current product and comparison pages, accessed in 2026; the pages do not state publication years. Check the exact model listing when buying, because capacity varies within both product families. Xbox says its optional Series X|S Expansion Card adds storage at the same performance as the console’s custom SSD. See Xbox’s model comparison, Series X specifications, and Series S specifications.

Does Series X run GTA 6 better?
That has not been established by the official information available. Rockstar confirms Xbox platform support, while Xbox describes each console’s general capabilities; neither provides GTA 6-specific Xbox resolution, frame-rate, graphics-setting, or side-by-side performance results. Series X’s higher-tier hardware and 4K positioning are not proof of a particular GTA 6 frame rate or image-quality difference. Avoid choosing on a promised GTA 6 performance advantage until credible game-specific results are available.
Does GTA 6 need Series X’s disc drive?
No, not for the physical GTA 6 version Rockstar describes. Its support article says the physical package contains a download code in a box, not a game disc; the code is used to download the game. So Series X’s drive may matter if you play other disc-based games or use UHD Blu-ray, but it is not required for that physical GTA 6 edition. Rockstar’s platform, editions, and versions support article, last updated August 18, 2026, describes the format.

Which console makes more sense for your priorities?
- Pick Series X if you want Xbox’s true-4K console positioning, the option of a disc drive for other games or UHD Blu-ray, or a specific Series X model with more built-in storage.
- Pick Series S if you are happy with a disc-free console positioned for 1440p and want the lower-tier Xbox system. It is officially listed for GTA 6.
- Compare exact models if storage matters: both families have multiple capacities. Expansion cards are optional and sold separately; the available sources do not establish how much space GTA 6 will require.
- Do not choose based on a claimed GTA 6 frame-rate winner: official game-specific Xbox performance figures are not available in the cited sources.
Xbox notes that prices and availability vary, so check current local listings before treating Series S as cheaper in your market. Compare the specific Series X and Series S models rather than assuming every console in a family has the same capacity or drive configuration.
