The better fit depends mainly on your display and whether you want to use game discs: Series X targets native 4K and has a UHD Blu-ray drive, while Series S is disc-free, designed for 1440p and can upscale to 4K. Actual game output varies by title, so the published specifications for one Gears game should not be applied to the whole series.

Which console makes more sense for your setup?
Choose Series X for native 4K or a disc library
Series X is the straightforward choice if you want a console described by Xbox as displaying games in native 4K, or if you own physical games and want a disc drive. That distinction also matters for backward-compatible disc games: Series S is digital-only. The console’s 4K description is not a promise that every Gears title renders at 4K; check the details for the specific game.

Choose Series S for digital-only play and a 1440p target
Series S fits a player who buys or accesses games digitally and is comfortable with Xbox’s stated 1440p design target and 4K upscaling. It supports the announced Reloaded Campaign and multiplayer modes, including multiplayer up to 120 FPS; it is not excluded from those modes because of its lower display target.

What performance has Xbox announced for each Gears game?
Gears of War: Reloaded
Xbox Wire’s May 5, 2025 announcement lists 4K, 60 FPS in Campaign, and multiplayer at up to 120 FPS for Gears of War: Reloaded, which launched August 26, 2025. The Xbox Store describes it as natively optimized for Series X|S. In an official Xbox podcast, Coalition staff specifically said the 60 FPS and up-to-120-FPS modes are available on Series S as well as Series X. These are published game claims, not independent measurements. A 120 Hz-capable display is needed to experience output at 120 FPS; advanced display features can have additional compatibility requirements. Gears 5
Xbox’s Store listing says Gears 5 is optimized for Series X|S, with reduced load times, Instant Resume, variable refresh rates, and 120 FPS in Versus. It specifies 4K HDR Ultra visuals on Series X, but does not provide a corresponding Series S resolution figure. The 120 FPS listing applies to Versus, not necessarily every campaign scene. If you own physical games or prefer disc purchases, Series X is the relevant option because Series S has no disc drive. If you plan to use digital purchases or subscription access, either console can play Reloaded; confirm that the game is currently included in the service you intend to use.

The available official descriptions clarify display targets, disc support, and selected game modes. They do not provide an independent, controlled Series X-versus-Series S comparison of resolution, frame pacing, or image quality across the Gears games. For Reloaded, the announced modes are shared by both consoles; for other titles, use the specific game’s stated features rather than assuming identical output.
