The better console is the one that preserves the games you already own and gives you access to the titles you actually want. Xbox Series X is the stronger fit for a library built around Xbox One, plus selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. PlayStation 5 is usually the safer choice for someone with a substantial PS4 collection or a stronger preference for PlayStation-exclusive releases and communities.
Neither platform makes every older game playable. Before buying, list your essential titles, note whether each is digital or on disc, check the exact compatibility status, then compare the console configuration, subscription catalog, friends list and current local price.

|---|---|---|
| Existing library | Xbox One games, plus selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Older-generation support is selective. | The overwhelming majority of PS4 games are backward compatible. Some titles may offer a digital PS5 upgrade. |
| Physical games | Compatibility depends on the individual game and whether your Series X configuration can read the disc. | Compatibility depends on the individual game and whether your PS5 configuration includes a disc drive. |
| Subscription access | Compare the current local Xbox plan and the specific games you want; a like-for-like price and catalog comparison is not established here. | PlayStation Plus includes game and classics catalogs. | Current cost | Verify the local console price, exact drive configuration, subscription and any required games or accessories immediately before purchase. | |
This is not a universal hardware winner. It is a compatibility and ecosystem decision: your account library, physical discs, desired games and friends should determine the answer.

Inventory your games before choosing
Start with the games you would be disappointed to lose access to. Include games bought digitally, discs on your shelf, downloadable expansions and titles you still play with friends. Record the platform account that owns each digital purchase; a game does not become transferable merely because both consoles are made by different generations of the same company.

Make a three-level list
- Must keep: games you play now, games with valuable saves or add-ons, and multiplayer titles your group still uses.
- Would replay: older single-player games and occasional favorites.
- Nice to have: titles you might buy again if they are inexpensive or included in a subscription.
Check every must-keep title individually on the platform holder’s compatibility or store page. Broad statements such as “PS4 compatible” or “Xbox backward compatible” do not guarantee that a particular game, edition, downloadable package or disc works.
Separate ownership from access
A digital license is tied to the account that purchased it, while a disc is a physical ownership check that the new console must be able to read. Write down the edition name, region, expansions and whether the game was obtained through a subscription rather than bought outright. This prevents a common error: counting a title as “owned” when the right to play it depends on an active plan.
For multiplayer games, note the platform on which your friends play and whether your progress, downloadable content and online access are handled separately. A game may be available on both consoles while still requiring different purchases or subscriptions.
Xbox Series X backward compatibility
What Microsoft officially supports
Microsoft states: “Xbox Series X|S Backward Compatibility is free and allows you to play selected Xbox 360, Original Xbox games and Xbox One games you already own on Xbox Series X|S.” The important word is selected. Series X is not a promise that every Xbox game ever released will run.
Xbox One compatibility covers the core of the previous generation, while Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is limited to titles Microsoft has included in its backward-compatibility program. Digital purchases associated with your Xbox account can appear in your library when supported. A disc can act as the license for a supported game, but the console still has to be able to read that disc.
Enhancements for supported games
Microsoft identifies Auto HDR and FPS Boost as enhancements available in supported backward-compatible games. These features can improve presentation or frame-rate behavior, but they are not universal settings. Confirm the feature for the specific title rather than assuming an older game receives both.
Compatibility and enhancement are separate checks. A game can run without receiving either feature, and an enhanced title still has to be on the supported list. Check the listing for the exact game rather than relying on its console generation or publisher.

What the 500,000-hour figure means
Microsoft reports more than 500,000 hours spent testing Xbox Series X|S backward-compatible titles against quality standards. This is Microsoft’s own reported testing effort; it is not an independent study, a count of compatible games or a comparison with Sony’s process. Use the title-level compatibility list for a buying decision.
PS5 backward compatibility with PS4
Most PS4 games work, but not every one
Sony says PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. That wording is broad rather than absolute, so check any essential title before you buy. Compatibility can also differ by edition, add-on and online-service status.

“Overwhelming majority” should therefore be treated as a strong general direction, not a guarantee for a particular disc or download. Search for the exact game, including special editions and regional releases, and confirm whether the version you own is the one covered.
PS4-to-PS5 upgrades
Some PS4 games offer an option to upgrade to a digital PS5 version. The upgrade is not automatically free and is not available for every game. Check the game’s own terms, region and edition. If you own a PS4 disc, the PS5 version may still require the disc as a license and therefore requires a PS5 configuration that can read it.

Treat the base game, expansions and save-related requirements as separate checklist items and read the publisher’s terms for the title you care about.
Physical discs, digital licenses and console configurations
Compatibility has two separate questions: does the game run? and can your chosen console authenticate the copy you own? A supported digital purchase normally follows the account that bought it. A physical copy requires a compatible disc drive as well as a supported game.
Confirm the drive before buying
- Identify whether your planned Xbox Series X or PS5 package includes a disc drive.
- For each disc game, verify that the exact title and region are supported.
- Keep the disc available if the console uses it as the ownership check, even after installing a digital version.
- Do not assume a digital-only configuration can use your existing discs.
- Check that the package name and included hardware match the listing; do not infer the contents from a product photograph or a retailer’s abbreviated title.
The available platform statements establish broad compatibility but do not provide a complete SKU-by-SKU drive comparison. Treat the model name and package contents as a purchase requirement, not a detail to sort out later.
Disc and digital decision examples
If your essential Xbox games are digital Xbox One purchases, the main question is title support and the account that owns them. If the same games are on discs, add the drive check. If your collection mixes formats, the console must satisfy both sets of requirements; a drive does not make an unsupported game compatible.
The same logic applies to a PS4 collection. A PS5 that can read discs still needs the particular PS4 game to be supported, while a digital-only PS5 cannot authenticate a disc you already own. Do not rebuy a title until you have checked whether your account or disc already provides access.
Compare subscription catalogs by the games you want
Subscription value depends on specific titles, not the service name. Write down the games you would otherwise buy, then check whether each is currently in the relevant catalog, whether the plan tier includes it and whether access is limited to the subscription period.
PlayStation Plus
Sony describes PlayStation Plus as having game and classics catalogs. Premium members can stream games from those catalogs to PS5, PS4 or PC. Catalog lineups, streaming availability and plan benefits can change and vary by market, so verify the current regional terms. Streaming is an access option, not proof that every game in the catalog can be downloaded or retained permanently.

When a catalog page lists several tiers, compare the tier that actually includes your target games. A higher tier can be poor value if you would not use its catalog or streaming option, while a lower tier may omit the titles that motivated the purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsXbox subscription comparison
The available evidence does not establish a current, like-for-like Xbox subscription price or catalog comparison. Check the plan offered in your country, the games currently listed, multiplayer requirements and whether a title is available for download, streaming or only a limited period.
Do not use the existence of a familiar service name as a proxy for value. The relevant questions are whether your games are listed today, which tier includes them and what happens when the catalog or your membership changes.
Calculate realistic subscription value
- List the two or three subscription games you would definitely play.
- Check the current local catalog and plan tier for each console.
- Count only the months you expect to keep the subscription.
- Add the cost of any game that leaves the catalog or is not included.
- Separate catalog access from games you intend to own permanently.
A lower monthly fee is not a saving if your essential games are absent or if you would keep buying them separately. Streaming can widen access, but it does not turn a catalog title into a permanent license.
Desired games and your friends can outweigh compatibility
A console can preserve your old library and still be the wrong choice if the new games you care about, or the people you play with, are elsewhere. Make a short list of upcoming and already released games you genuinely intend to play. Check the platform, edition, cross-play support and any required subscription for each one.

Your friends’ platform can affect the practical value of a console more than a long list of games you may never launch.
Use a weighted shortlist
Give each must-play game one point for platform availability, one for acceptable ownership cost and one for being playable with your preferred group. Give a library-preservation point for every must-keep title that works without an unwanted repurchase. This is not a universal score; it is a way to expose which compromises you would actually notice.
If one console wins because it preserves ten games you play every month, that should outweigh a small difference in a catalog you may sample once. If both existing libraries are small, upcoming games and friends deserve more weight.
Compare the complete local cost
Current prices, stock and exact configurations vary by country and were not established in the available evidence. Get a current regional figure for the console immediately before purchase, then include the costs that apply to your library.

| Cost item | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Console configuration | Does the package include a disc drive, and is it the model required for your physical games? |
| Subscription | Which tier supplies online multiplayer or the catalog games you want, and what is its current local price? |
| Games | How many must-have titles are already owned, included in a catalog or still need to be purchased? |
| Storage | Will your installed library fit, or will you need an expansion later? Verify any accessory’s compatibility separately. |
| Accessories | Do you need another controller or a replacement for an existing peripheral? |
Do not treat a discounted console as cheaper until you have added the subscription, missing games and the drive configuration needed for your discs.
Cost scenarios to test
- Digital-heavy owner: add only games that are not in your account library, then compare the required subscription tier.
- Disc-heavy owner: include the drive-equipped configuration and any titles that are not supported, because replacement purchases can erase the apparent hardware saving.
- New player: price the console, the first three games, multiplayer access and any second controller rather than comparing console stickers alone.
- Catalog sampler: calculate the number of months needed to finish the games you want and compare that with buying the favorites outright.
A practical decision process
- Export your library list. Use your Xbox or PlayStation account purchase history and your physical shelf. Separate digital licenses from discs.
- Mark compatibility. Check each must-keep game on the relevant official compatibility or store listing. Record whether it runs natively, through backward compatibility or through an upgrade.
- Check ownership requirements. Note whether the game needs the original disc, a particular edition or an online subscription.
- Audit the drive. Select only a console configuration that can authenticate the physical games you intend to use.
- Compare catalogs. Look up the current local subscription tiers and confirm the exact games you care about.
- Check your community. Verify where your friends play and whether your key multiplayer titles support cross-play.
- Price the whole setup. Add console, subscription, replacement purchases and any necessary accessories in your currency.
- Choose the platform with fewer compromises. If both libraries are small, let desired games and friends decide. If one library is large, give preservation and ownership priority.
Which console fits common library situations?
You own many Xbox One games
Xbox Series X is the natural first choice because Microsoft explicitly supports Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles you already own. Still verify your most important games and whether your copies are discs or digital licenses.
You own many PS4 games
PS5 is usually the better fit because Sony says the overwhelming majority of PS4 games are backward compatible. Check exclusions and any upgrade charge before assuming a PS5 version is included.
You own discs from older Xbox generations
Series X can be attractive if your specific Xbox 360 or original Xbox games are on Microsoft’s selected compatibility list. A disc drive and title-level verification are essential; an entire generation is not automatically supported.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Your library is split evenly
Compare the must-keep list rather than the total number of games. Give extra weight to games with expensive add-ons, irreplaceable saves, active multiplayer communities and no practical replacement on the other platform.
You are starting without a previous library
Choose based on the games you plan to buy, your friends’ platform, the current regional subscription catalog and the complete cost of the exact configuration. Backward compatibility matters less when there is little to preserve.
You mostly buy games on disc
Start by eliminating configurations that cannot read your collection. Then check individual title support. A drive solves the authentication problem only for games that the platform supports.
You mostly use subscriptions
List the games you would play immediately and verify their current catalog status, tier and access method. Compare the months you will realistically subscribe rather than an assumed year-long membership.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
- Assuming every older game works: verify each title; Xbox support for older generations is selective, and PS5 support is not literally every PS4 game.
- Buying the wrong console configuration: confirm the drive before ordering if you own discs.
- Assuming an upgrade is free: read the individual PS4 game’s upgrade terms.
- Counting a subscription catalog as permanent ownership: check whether access ends when a title leaves the catalog or your plan expires.
- Using the 500,000-hour statistic as a compatibility count: it describes Microsoft’s testing effort, not the number of supported games or a cross-platform ranking.
- Ignoring regional differences: prices, stock, plan benefits and catalog titles can vary by market; use the store serving your country.
- Comparing generations instead of editions: confirm the exact release, add-ons and region for the copy you own.
- Assuming a disc is optional after installation: retain it if the console uses it as the ownership check.
- Choosing from hardware specifications alone: a technically attractive console can still require costly repurchases or separate accessories for your library.
Final recommendation
Buy Xbox Series X when your important purchases and saves are on Xbox One, or when selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox support covers the older titles you actually play. Buy PS5 when your essential library is on PS4, when its catalog and new releases match your interests, or when your friends are already there. If neither platform clearly preserves your must-keep games, compare the desired titles and total local setup cost rather than choosing from hardware specifications alone.

You need a compatible drive for physical games, in addition to verifying that the title itself is supported. A digital-only configuration cannot authenticate an existing disc.
Does Xbox backward compatibility include every Xbox 360 game?
No. Microsoft describes support for selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, not every title from those generations.
What does Microsoft’s 500,000-hour testing figure prove?
It describes Microsoft’s reported testing effort for backward-compatible titles. It is not a count of supported games and is not a direct comparison with Sony.
Is PlayStation Plus catalog access the same as owning a game?
No. Catalog access depends on the current lineup, your plan tier and your membership. Sony also offers Premium streaming for catalog games on PS5, PS4 or PC, subject to market and plan availability.

Which console is cheaper overall?
There is no universal answer without your country and library. Compare the current local console price, exact drive configuration, subscription, replacement games and accessories you actually need.
The Bottom Line
Choose the platform that creates fewer library compromises. Xbox Series X favors Xbox One owners and selected older Xbox titles; PS5 favors players with substantial PS4 libraries. Verify every must-have game, disc requirement, subscription term and local total before ordering.
