Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe Xbox Series X is a strong fit if you want a 4K-capable console, play compatible physical Xbox games, or value faster loading and Quick Resume. Its main trade-offs are that the advertised top performance depends on the game and display, some Series X configurations have no disc drive, and performance-matching storage expansion costs extra. Whether it is worth choosing over Series S comes down to your screen, media library, storage needs, and local price.
What are the Xbox Series X’s main advantages?
4K gaming and high frame rates
Microsoft lists true 4K gaming and performance up to 120 frames per second, along with HDMI 2.1, variable refresh rate, Auto Low Latency Mode, and AMD FreeSync. These are capabilities, not a promise that every game will run at 4K and 120 FPS: Microsoft says that mode requires supported content and a supported display. Your screen and the game’s available modes both affect what you actually see.

Quick Resume and faster loading
Microsoft attributes faster loading and switching among multiple games to Xbox Velocity Architecture and Quick Resume. These features can make moving between games more convenient, but Microsoft does not give a single loading-time guarantee for every title.

A large library of compatible older games
Microsoft says Series X supports thousands of games across four Xbox generations. Compatibility applies to supported titles, not every game released for an older Xbox. For a supported disc game, the console downloads the game to storage, and you must keep the disc in the drive to play.

A disc-drive option
The Carbon Black and Galaxy Black configurations listed on Microsoft’s US page include a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. That can be useful if you own physical Xbox games or want to play UHD Blu-ray movie discs. The Digital Edition has no optical drive, so check the exact configuration before buying if discs matter to you.
Multiple storage configurations
Microsoft lists Series X configurations with 1TB or 2TB of storage on its US product page. An optional Series X|S Storage Expansion Card connects through the dedicated port and, according to Microsoft, matches the internal storage’s performance. The card is sold separately. Microsoft also supports standard external USB storage, but distinguishes it from the performance-matching expansion card.

What are the drawbacks and limits?
The best-looking performance needs compatible games and a capable screen
The 4K and 120 FPS figures describe supported capabilities, not a setting that applies to every game. Microsoft’s qualification is that 4K at up to 120 FPS requires supported content and a supported display. If your screen cannot show the modes you want, some of the console’s display capabilities may go unused.
Series X listings are not all the same
The disc drive and storage vary by configuration. Microsoft’s US page lists 1TB Carbon Black and 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition models with a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, as well as a 1TB Digital Edition without one. Availability can differ by market, so verify the precise SKU and local listing rather than assuming every Series X includes a drive.

More usable storage can mean another purchase
The performance-matching expansion card is optional and sold separately. Microsoft does not give a universal price for it; prices and availability vary by retailer and market. Consider the cost of the configuration and any extra storage you expect to need when comparing consoles.
How does Series X compare with Series S?
Microsoft describes Series X as offering native 4K and a disc-drive option, while Series S is disc-free and designed for 1440p with the ability to upscale to 4K. Both support up to 120 FPS when the game and display support it. The specifications below reflect Microsoft’s US product page; configurations, prices, and availability can vary by market.
