No reviewed source confirms $1,600 as the standard U.S. price of an Xbox Series X. GamesRadar reported an $800 price for the U.S. disc model in October 2026, while a Microsoft Store listing observed October 12 showed a $649.99 starting price alongside an out-of-stock notice. Those figures reflect different listings and contexts, not a universal price. Microsoft has cited rising memory and storage costs for price increases, but the available evidence does not establish a current retail shortage rate. Xbox did announce two console exclusives in June 2026: Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution.
How much does an Xbox Series X cost now?
There is no single price supported for every market, seller, and Series X configuration. In October 2026, GamesRadar reported that the U.S. disc model was priced at $800 amid recent console price increases. The Microsoft Store listing accessed October 12, 2026, showed “Starting From $649.99” and an “Out of stock?” prompt. The two observations differ in listing context; neither establishes a global price or guarantees a current offer. Check the live listing and local participating retailers before buying.

Microsoft said new console prices would take effect August 1, 2026, attributing the increases to higher memory and storage component costs. Its announcement said console storage and memory prices had risen by more than 2.5 times. That is Microsoft’s explanation for its pricing decisions, not an independent measure of retail inventory or a price prediction for a particular buyer. Microsoft’s June 25 price announcement
Is the Xbox Series X out of stock?
The Microsoft Store page observed October 12, 2026, displayed an out-of-stock prompt, but a single listing cannot establish availability across retailers or regions. Microsoft says availability varies by market and directs customers to participating retailers. The reviewed sources do not provide a named regulator, independent auditor, or primary dataset quantifying a current Series X shortage. Rising component costs and falling sales are not, by themselves, evidence of a particular shortage rate.

Why have prices risen?
Microsoft has pointed to the cost of console memory and storage. In a June 10, 2026 Xbox Wire post, CEO Asha Sharma wrote: “When I joined as CEO in February, the price we paid for console storage components was over 2x as high as we paid last fall.” She added: “These costs have since doubled again.” Sharma said another significant increase was expected by the 2027 holiday season. These figures describe Microsoft’s stated internal component costs; they are not independently audited market-wide measurements. Sharma’s Xbox Wire post

Does Xbox have console exclusives?
At its June 7, 2026 showcase, Xbox named Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as console exclusives and explicitly said they were not timed exclusives. Xbox also said games already announced for multiplatform release would remain on that plan. This establishes two announced exclusives and a stated approach; it does not mean every Xbox game will be exclusive or that earlier multiplatform plans have been reversed. What distinguishes Series X from Series S?
Microsoft describes the Series X as offering native 4K gaming and a UHD Blu-ray disc player, while the disc-free Series S is designed for 1440p and comes with 512 GB or 1 TB storage configurations. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results. Both consoles support a storage expansion card. Microsoft’s Xbox console comparison
The Series X product page lists 12 teraflops, native 4K, up to 120 FPS, and a 1 TB custom SSD. Microsoft also says the console is compatible with thousands of games across four Xbox generations and that most Xbox One controllers and accessories work with Series X|S. Actual performance can vary by game; the listed specifications alone do not establish a particular game’s resolution or frame rate. Microsoft’s Series X specifications

What to check before buying
- Local price and stock: Compare current offers from participating retailers in your region; listings change and the cited U.S. figures do not apply universally.
- Disc format: Choose Series X if you want its UHD Blu-ray drive or need a console that uses physical games. Series S is disc-free.
- Resolution and storage: Match Microsoft’s stated target resolution and the available storage configuration to your needs.
- Games and platforms: Check the confirmed platforms for the specific games you want instead of assuming all Xbox releases are exclusive.
- Condition: If new stock or pricing is unsuitable, check whether certified-refurbished or previously played consoles are actually offered in your market, and review the seller’s condition and warranty terms.
Microsoft says the Series X package includes the console, an Xbox controller, a high-speed HDMI cable, and a power cord. For additional game storage, Microsoft recommends the 1 TB Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S, which it says maintains the console’s custom SSD performance.
