Remote Play streams a game installed on your console; it is not the same service as Xbox Cloud Gaming.
What Xbox Remote Play does—and what it does not
Remote Play sends the video and audio of a game running on your own Xbox console to another supported device. The game must be installed on that console, and the console remains the source of the session. Xbox says Remote Play can be used with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles when Remote features are enabled.

Cloud gaming follows a different path: the game runs on an Xbox server rather than on your console. A cloud session can therefore work when your console is unavailable, while Remote Play can fail even though cloud gaming works. Conversely, a Remote Play problem does not prove that Xbox’s cloud service is down.

Start with this quick diagnosis
| What you see | Most likely layer to check | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The Xbox mobile app no longer shows Remote Play | Access method | Open a supported mobile browser and go to xbox.com/remoteplay. |
| The console cannot be found | Console setup, account or client | Confirm the console is an Xbox One or Series X|S, Remote features are enabled, and the same Microsoft account has an Xbox profile. |
| The page opens but the session will not start | Client compatibility or network | Check the device minimums and compare the connection with Xbox’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile-data and 10 Mbps-download guidance. |
| Video plays but controls do nothing | Input hardware | Pair a supported Bluetooth controller for mobile play and test its connection independently. |
| A game streams from an Xbox server instead of your console | Service selection | Exit cloud play and start Remote Play from the console’s installed-game session. |
| The session is unstable on one network | Connection path | Retry on another supported network, such as a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network or mobile data, and compare the result. |
These checks diagnose different layers. A controller can correct an input problem, but it cannot make a console discoverable, repair an account mismatch or improve a failing network path.
Check the current mobile access method
On April 16, 2025, Xbox announced that Remote Play would no longer be available directly from the Xbox mobile app. The supported replacement is a browser session at xbox.com/remoteplay. Instructions that tell you to launch Remote Play from an older version of the mobile app are therefore obsolete.
- Open the browser on your phone or tablet.
- Enter xbox.com/remoteplay directly rather than following an old app menu path.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox profile.
- If the page does not load, try the device’s current supported browser and then test the same account on another supported device. This separates a browser or device issue from a console issue.
The browser change affects how you enter Remote Play; it does not remove the requirements for an eligible console, an Xbox-profile account, a supported client and a suitable connection.
Verify the console and Remote features
Confirm the console model
Remote Play in this guidance applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. If you are attempting to connect to a different Xbox product or to a console that is not signed in and available, the session cannot start through this path.
Enable Remote features
On the console, open Settings and verify that Remote features are enabled. The exact wording and menu placement can change with console software updates, so use the Remote features section shown by your current Xbox interface rather than relying on a screenshot from an older guide.
Make sure the game is installed on that console
Remote Play streams an installed game from your own console. A title that is only available through cloud streaming, or a title that has not been installed on the console, is not a valid Remote Play target. If the game is in your Game Pass library, it still needs to be installed for a Remote Play session.

Check the account and client before changing the network
Use an account with an Xbox profile
Sign in with a Microsoft account that has an Xbox profile. Being able to sign in to another Microsoft service does not by itself establish that the account is configured for Xbox Remote Play. If the browser is signed in to a different account, sign out and select the account linked to the console.

Compare your device with Xbox’s published minimums
Xbox’s Remote Play requirements page lists these client minimums:
| Client | Published minimum | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Android 6.0 or later | Compatibility can change as browsers and operating systems are updated. |
| iPhone or iPad | iOS 15.1 or later | Check current browser support before troubleshooting deeper network causes. |
| Windows PC | Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or later | The operating-system version is a minimum, not a guarantee that every browser configuration will work. |
These figures were listed on Xbox’s current Remote Play requirements page accessed October 13, 2026. They are volatile platform requirements, so recheck the page when you troubleshoot a newly updated phone, tablet or PC.
Use a supported browser or device
Remote Play is delivered through supported clients, including browser-supported PCs, smartphones, tablets, compatible smart TVs and Meta Quest headsets. If one device fails, testing another supported client is useful: a working session elsewhere points to the original device or browser, while failure everywhere points back toward the console, account or connection.
Measure the connection against Xbox’s guidance
Xbox publishes “5Ghz Wi-Fi or mobile data connection 10Mbps down” as its Remote Play connection guidance. Treat this as a target for the connection used by the client, not as a promise that every session will be stable once the number is reached.
- Wi-Fi band: When using Wi-Fi, try a 5 GHz network if your device and router offer one. A 2.4 GHz network is not the band named in Xbox’s published guidance.
- Download speed: Check that the connection available to the device reaches about 10 Mbps downstream. A speed test measures conditions at that moment; congestion can change the result during play.
- Mobile data: Xbox includes mobile data as an acceptable connection path. If Wi-Fi fails, a temporary mobile-data test can show whether the local Wi-Fi path is the variable.
- Alternate network: Retry from another supported network where practical. A session that works elsewhere indicates that the original network path needs attention, even if the console and account are correctly configured.
The published requirement does not establish a universal upload minimum, latency cutoff, NAT setting, port-forwarding rule or firewall recipe. Do not change those settings simply because a generic troubleshooting article recommends them. If you investigate those areas, treat any result as network-specific rather than an Xbox-prescribed fix.

Separate controller problems from streaming problems
Xbox lists a compatible Bluetooth controller as recommended, and mobile play requires a supported Bluetooth controller. This requirement concerns input: it explains why a game can display video while buttons, sticks or triggers do not respond.
- Confirm that the controller model supports Bluetooth and that it is charged.
- Pair it with the phone or tablet through the device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Start or resume the Remote Play session after pairing, then test several controls.
- If the picture never appears or the console cannot be reached, troubleshoot the access, console, account and network layers first; pairing a controller will not repair those failures.
On a PC, TV or headset, use the input method supported by that client. The mobile requirement for a Bluetooth controller should not be interpreted as proof that every Remote Play client accepts every controller connection method.
Follow a complete troubleshooting sequence
1. Enter through the supported route
Use a supported browser and open xbox.com/remoteplay. On mobile, do not base the diagnosis on an old Xbox-app menu. The April 2025 access change is the first thing to correct when the app instructions no longer match what you see.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Sign in to the correct Xbox account
Check the account indicator in the browser and sign in with the Microsoft account that has an Xbox profile and is associated with the console. An account switch can look like a discovery failure because the correct console is not available to the signed-in profile.
3. Confirm the console prerequisites
Verify that the target is an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, Remote features are enabled, and the game you want to play is installed on that console. These are independent of the browser and controller.
4. Validate the client
Compare the phone, tablet or PC with the published Android, iOS and Windows minimums. If the device is below a listed minimum, move the test to a supported device instead of spending time changing router settings.

5. Test the connection
Measure the connection used by the client and compare it with Xbox’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile-data and 10 Mbps-download guidance. Retry on another supported network. Record whether the symptom changes: failure on every network points to a different layer than failure on one Wi-Fi connection.
6. Test input after video works
Pair a supported Bluetooth controller for mobile play and test controls only after the stream reaches the game. If video and audio work but input does not, keep the network diagnosis separate from the controller diagnosis.
7. Confirm that you selected Remote Play, not cloud gaming
Remote Play should launch the game installed on your console. Cloud gaming starts a game running on Xbox infrastructure. Return to the Remote Play entry point if the session is using the wrong service or if you are trying to play a title that is not installed locally.

The app path is missing
This is an access-method issue, not evidence that your console or controller is broken. Use the browser route at xbox.com/remoteplay and sign in there.
The browser opens but no console appears
Work through the account and console checks: correct Xbox-profile Microsoft account, eligible console model, enabled Remote features and a game installed on that console. Then test the same account on another supported client.
The session starts and immediately fails
Check the client minimum and the active network. Compare the connection with Xbox’s 10 Mbps-download and 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile-data guidance, then retry on another supported network. Do not infer a specific NAT or port-forwarding fix from this symptom alone.

Video is present but controls are unavailable
Treat this as an input issue. Verify that the mobile device is paired with a supported Bluetooth controller. A working picture demonstrates that the streaming path has progressed farther than the controller path.
The wrong game or service opens
Remote Play requires the game to be installed on the console. Cloud gaming runs on an Xbox server, so switch back to Remote Play when the goal is to stream from your own console.
What not to assume
- Meeting 10 Mbps down does not guarantee a stable session; Xbox presents it as connection guidance.
- A controller is not a cure for console discovery, account, browser or network failures.
- Cloud Gaming working does not prove that Remote Play is configured, because the two services run games in different places.
- Old instructions placing Remote Play inside the Xbox mobile app may be outdated after the April 16, 2025 access change.
- A router purchase, port-forwarding rule, upload threshold or NAT classification is not established as universally required by Xbox’s published requirements cited here.
When the checks still do not resolve the problem
Keep a short record of the variables you tested: console model, whether Remote features are enabled, account used, client and operating-system version, connection type, measured download speed and whether a supported controller is paired. Note whether the failure occurs before the console appears, when the session starts, during streaming or only when you press a control. This prevents repeating the same layer of troubleshooting and gives support a precise symptom.

Remote Play requirements at a glance
| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Console | Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S | These are the console families covered by the stated Remote Play support. |
| Console feature | Remote features enabled | Without the feature enabled, the console is not prepared to accept Remote Play. |
| Account | Microsoft account with an Xbox profile | The browser session must be associated with the Xbox account that can access the console. |
| Entry point | Supported browser at xbox.com/remoteplay on mobile | Remote Play was removed from direct access in the Xbox mobile app in April 2025. |
| Client | Android 6.0+, iOS 15.1+, or Windows 10/11 version 22H2+ | These are the minimums listed on Xbox’s page accessed October 13, 2026; current support remains subject to change. |
| Connection | 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data; 10 Mbps download guidance | This is Xbox’s published connection guidance, not a stability guarantee. |
| Input | Supported Bluetooth controller for mobile play | Required for mobile controls, but unrelated to console discovery or stream transport. |
| Game location | Game installed on the user’s console | Remote Play runs the game on that console rather than on an Xbox cloud server. |
Remote Play versus Xbox Cloud Gaming
| Characteristic | Remote Play | Cloud Gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On your Xbox One or Series X|S console | On an Xbox server |
| Game availability | The game must be installed on your console | Availability follows the cloud catalog and service rules |
| What a failure points toward | Your console setup, account, client or connection to the console | A separate cloud-streaming path |
| Typical reason to choose it | Play your installed console games remotely | Play without using your own console to run the game |
Choosing the correct service prevents a false diagnosis. If your aim is to reach a game installed on your Xbox, troubleshoot Remote Play using the sequence above. If your aim is to play without the console running the game, you are asking a cloud-streaming question instead.
