Xbox Play Anywhere lets you buy one eligible digital game and use it on supported Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds without paying a second Play Anywhere fee. Your Xbox-account progress, add-ons and achievements can follow you between those devices. The entitlement is title-specific and digital-only, so check the Play Anywhere badge on the game’s current Xbox or Windows store listing before you buy.
What Xbox Play Anywhere actually includes
Play Anywhere is an entitlement attached to certain digital Xbox games. When a game carries the Play Anywhere badge, a qualifying digital purchase grants access on supported Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. Xbox also identifies supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds as compatible devices.

You do not purchase a separate “PC version” or pay an additional Play Anywhere charge for an eligible game. The important qualification is that both the title and the purchase format must qualify. Xbox games are not automatically Play Anywhere games, and owning a physical disc does not create a PC entitlement.

Xbox’s official FAQ states: “Xbox Play Anywhere only applies to digital games.” That includes a digital purchase made through an Xbox or Windows store and can include a digital code sold by a participating retailer, subject to that listing’s terms.

Cross-buy: buy once, install on supported devices
What “buy once” means
For an eligible digital title, the license is associated with the Microsoft/Xbox account that made or redeemed the purchase. Sign in with that account on a supported Xbox console or Windows device, then install the game from the relevant library or store listing. You are not buying another copy simply because you move from console to PC.
The entitlement does not mean every edition, platform or future product is automatically included. Confirm that the exact game listing shows the Play Anywhere badge, and check the edition you intend to buy. A deluxe or bundled edition may include different add-ons from a standard edition.
Digital codes from retailers
Xbox says participating retailers may sell digital codes that qualify for Play Anywhere. A code is still a digital purchase, but eligibility can depend on the specific game, edition and region. Before redeeming or buying a code, compare its product description with the Xbox or Windows listing and look for the Play Anywhere badge.
Why discs are different
A disc proves access to the console copy when the disc is present; it does not supply the digital license required for Play Anywhere on Windows. Do not assume that inserting an Xbox disc into a PC, or owning the disc on your account, unlocks a downloadable PC copy. If you want the cross-device entitlement, buy or redeem the eligible digital version.

Cross-save: how progress moves between Xbox and PC
The Xbox account is the link
Play Anywhere saves progress with your Xbox account. Start a supported game on one eligible device, then sign in to the same account on another supported device to continue with the associated save data. This is account-based continuity, not a separate save profile created for each machine.
Use the same Xbox account consistently. Signing into Windows with a different gaming account can make the game appear unowned or show a different save state, even if the computer itself is compatible.
More than the basic save file
Xbox says Play Anywhere can carry related game state for games you own, including add-ons, Season Passes, consumables and in-game unlocks. The exact behavior of an item can still depend on the game’s design and service rules; Play Anywhere does not turn a game’s online account, servers or content policies into a universal system.
Shared achievements and Gamerscore
Achievements are shared across the supported versions rather than being split into a separate list for each device. Xbox describes it this way: “A single shared set of Gamerscore and Achievements will be earned and awarded for Xbox Play Anywhere games.” An achievement earned on Xbox therefore belongs to the same Play Anywhere achievement set you see when playing on Windows.

“Supported handheld” is not a promise that every handheld computer works. Xbox names Windows 11 gaming handhelds as the supported category and features the ROG Xbox Ally X as an example, but its FAQ does not provide a model-by-model compatibility list. Check the handheld manufacturer’s Windows support and the game’s requirements before purchasing for portable play.
A handheld is optional. You can use Play Anywhere with only an Xbox console, only a Windows PC, or both. An Xbox controller is also an optional accessory, not a Play Anywhere requirement; control support depends on the game and device.
How to check a game before buying
- Open the current Xbox or Windows store listing. Search for the exact title and edition you plan to purchase.
- Find the Play Anywhere badge. Treat the badge as the decisive eligibility check, not the fact that a game is published for Xbox or appears on a PC storefront.
- Confirm the purchase format. The entitlement applies to digital games. If the offer is a disc, it is not Play Anywhere cross-buy.
- Read the device and system requirements. Play Anywhere grants the entitlement; it does not guarantee that every PC or Windows 11 handheld can run the game acceptably.
- Check the region and edition. Store availability, codes and included add-ons can vary by region and edition.
- Recheck at checkout. Eligibility can change as catalog listings and editions change. Xbox’s live listing is more reliable than an old article or static game list.
Xbox’s catalog page currently lists Play Anywhere titles, including Forza Horizon 6. That catalog is not an immutable list: titles, editions and availability can change. Use the live listing and badge for the game you are buying.

Installing and continuing a game on another device
From Xbox to Windows
- On the Xbox console, finish playing normally while signed into the Xbox account that owns the digital Play Anywhere game.
- On the Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, sign into the Xbox app and the Microsoft Store with the account that owns or redeemed the game.
- Find the game in your library or its store listing and choose the install option.
- Launch the game and allow it to connect to the Xbox service. Select the existing profile or save when prompted.
- After playing, close the game normally and allow synchronization to finish before switching devices.
From Windows to Xbox
- Sign into the same Xbox account on the console.
- Open your owned games or search the store for the Play Anywhere title.
- Install the console version without purchasing a second copy.
- Start the game and choose the account’s existing progress when the game presents its profile or save options.
The exact menus can differ by game and by current Xbox or Windows app version. The constant requirements are an eligible digital entitlement, a supported device and the same Xbox account.

The simultaneous-play limit
One Play Anywhere entitlement is not a license for several people to sign into the same game at once. Xbox states that the same game cannot be signed into simultaneously on an Xbox console, a Windows PC and a supported handheld. Sign out or stop the active session before starting the title on another device.
This restriction matters in households. Buying one digital Play Anywhere copy does not let two players use that same game simultaneously on separate devices. Separate accounts, licenses or the game’s own family-sharing options may be required, depending on the platform and title; Play Anywhere itself does not remove the session limit.
What Play Anywhere does not promise
- Not every Xbox game qualifies: eligibility belongs to the individual title and can change.
- Not disc-to-PC conversion: the feature is digital-only.
- Not universal hardware compatibility: a Play Anywhere license does not bypass PC specifications, Windows support or handheld requirements.
- Not simultaneous use: the same game cannot be signed into at the same time on the covered devices.
- Not a guarantee of identical features: resolution, controls, performance, interface and available settings can differ between console, PC and handheld versions.
- Not a separate achievement list: supported versions use one shared Gamerscore and achievement set.
Troubleshooting common Play Anywhere problems
The game asks me to buy it again
- Check that the store account is the same one that bought or redeemed the digital game.
- Verify the Play Anywhere badge on the exact edition and region listing.
- Confirm that you did not purchase a disc or a code for a different platform or edition.
- Sign out and back into the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, then refresh the library.
My save is missing on the second device
- Use the same Xbox account on both devices.
- Reconnect the first device and let the game finish saving and synchronizing before closing it.
- Check whether the game is online and its services are available.
- Do not overwrite the existing save with a new profile until you have confirmed which account is active.
The handheld runs Windows but the game will not install or play
- Confirm that the handheld is a supported Windows 11 gaming handheld and is running a compatible Windows build.
- Compare its processor, graphics, memory and storage with the game’s current requirements.
- Check the live store listing rather than relying on a handheld photograph or a general claim that all handhelds are supported.
Achievements did not appear immediately
Keep the device connected and signed into the owning Xbox account, then allow the game to reconnect. Achievement unlocking and display are handled by the game and Xbox service; switching devices does not create a second achievement set.

There is no extra fee for the Play Anywhere entitlement itself on an eligible game. Your practical costs are the game’s digital price, any optional hardware and any separately sold content included or excluded by the edition you select.
Bottom line for buyers
Think of Xbox Play Anywhere as three checks that must all pass: the game must display the Play Anywhere badge, your purchase must be digital, and each device must be supported. When those conditions are met, one Xbox-account purchase can cover Xbox, Windows PC and supported Windows 11 handheld access, with progress, eligible game state, add-ons and achievements following the account. Before paying, verify the live listing, edition, region and device requirements; those details determine whether the promise applies to your specific purchase.
