PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart by identifying how you are connecting the controller: USB, Bluetooth, or Xbox Wireless. Then test a correctly matched, data-capable USB cable. If Windows recognizes the controller over USB, the fault is probably limited to Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless; if USB also fails, check power, the cable, the port, and Windows device recognition before changing wireless settings.
Choose the connection you are actually using
Xbox controller revisions do not all support the same wireless features. Microsoft lists USB, Bluetooth, and Xbox Wireless as PC connection methods, but the exact controller model and your PC’s hardware determine which options apply.
| Method | What you need | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| USB | A cable that matches the controller port and carries data, plus a working PC USB port | Connect directly to the PC and watch for Windows device recognition |
| Bluetooth | A Bluetooth-capable, functioning PC and a controller revision with Bluetooth support | Put the controller into pairing mode, keep it close to the PC, and pair it in Windows |
| Xbox Wireless | A compatible Xbox Wireless receiver or Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, where supported | Verify the exact controller and adapter compatibility before pairing |
Try USB first
USB is both a reliable way to play and a diagnostic test for wireless problems.
- Turn on the controller and connect it directly to the PC with a known data-capable cable. Match the cable connector to the port on your controller; do not assume every Xbox One controller uses the same connector.
- Try a different USB port, preferably one built into the PC rather than a hub or dock.
- Look for a Windows connection sound or a newly listed game controller. If nothing changes, try another known data cable; some cables provide power only.
- If the controller works over USB, use it temporarily and troubleshoot only the wireless method. If it does not, inspect the cable, port, controller power, and Windows recognition before blaming Bluetooth.
Fix Bluetooth pairing and reconnection
Put the controller into pairing mode
Turn on the controller, then hold its pairing button until the Xbox logo begins flashing. Keep it near the PC and make sure its battery or rechargeable pack has sufficient charge. A controller can appear discoverable yet fail to complete pairing when it is out of range, underpowered, or still connected elsewhere.

Remove the old pairing and pair again
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Find the controller, select the three-dot menu, choose Remove device, and confirm.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, select Add device > Bluetooth, and choose the controller when it appears.
- If Windows reports that it cannot connect, restart both the PC and controller, then repeat the pairing process with other nearby Bluetooth devices temporarily switched off.
Run Windows’ Bluetooth troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and start the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter. Follow its prompts for discovery, pairing, and adapter checks. Microsoft identifies pairing mode, range, low battery, drivers, services, and updates as common causes of Bluetooth connection failures.
Check the PC’s Bluetooth driver
Install the current Bluetooth driver recommended by your PC or motherboard manufacturer. Outdated or incompatible drivers can leave Bluetooth visible but unable to establish a controller connection. Restart Windows after installing a driver, then try pairing again.

If Bluetooth is missing or unreliable
Some PCs have no Bluetooth adapter, while others have an adapter with a faulty driver or poor reception. Confirm that Bluetooth appears in Windows and that its adapter is enabled. If the PC lacks working Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless may be an alternative, but compatibility depends on the controller revision and receiver.
Microsoft has documented an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. That documentation is old and does not establish current retail availability or compatibility with every Xbox One controller. Check the exact controller model and the current adapter listing before buying anything.

Consider a controller firmware update
Microsoft says updating controller firmware may resolve connection problems. Use the current Xbox Accessories instructions or official Xbox Support guidance for the controller model you own. The exact update path and model support can differ, so treat firmware updating as a possible fix rather than a guaranteed one. Do not rely on an undocumented rollback or random Device Manager changes.
Use the symptom to narrow the fault
Windows never reacts to a wired connection
- Test another data-capable cable and another direct USB port.
- Check that the controller powers on and that its port is not loose or damaged.
- Restart Windows and test the controller on another compatible device if available.
The controller appears in Bluetooth but will not connect
- Charge or replace the batteries.
- Remove the old Windows pairing and add the controller again.
- Run the Windows 11 Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter.
- Update the PC manufacturer’s Bluetooth driver and restart.
It connects, then repeatedly disconnects
- Move the controller closer to the PC and reduce nearby wireless interference.
- Check battery level and test USB to separate a power or radio problem from a controller fault.
- Install available controller firmware updates using current official Xbox guidance.
Windows version matters
Microsoft’s PC guidance specifies Windows 10 Anniversary Update or later for Bluetooth use. For a current setup, use Windows 11 instructions and the Get Help troubleshooter. Microsoft states that free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended after October 14, 2025; an unsupported Windows 10 installation may not receive current Bluetooth fixes.

When the controller itself may be faulty
If a known good data cable, multiple USB ports, and another compatible PC all fail, the controller’s port, battery, wireless radio, or internal hardware may be defective. If USB works but no supported wireless method does after driver, pairing, and firmware checks, the wireless hardware or compatibility of that controller revision is the likely limiting factor.
