The fastest fix is to match the controller to the correct connection method. Use Xbox Wireless for an Xbox console, Bluetooth for a compatible Windows 10/11 PC or mobile device, and a USB-C cable for charging or wired detection. For Bluetooth, charge the controller, enter pairing mode with the Connect button, remove any old Windows entry, and pair it again. For USB problems, use a known-good USB-C data cable—many cables charge but cannot carry data. If a second cable and another host still cannot detect the controller, the USB-C port or controller hardware may need Xbox support or warranty service.
Which connection should you use?
The Xbox Nano Controller has three distinct connection paths. Xbox Wireless is the console-oriented method. Bluetooth is intended for Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs and compatible mobile devices. USB-C is used for charging and can provide a wired data connection when the cable and host support it. Microsoft’s controller guidance treats these as separate methods, so a controller that charges over USB is not necessarily working as a USB data device, and a Bluetooth pairing problem does not prove that Xbox Wireless is defective.

| Connection mode | Typical host | What it requires | Useful diagnostic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless | Xbox console | Console and controller pairing controls; charged controller | Try the controller on the console, then check firmware through Xbox Accessories if a cable works |
| Bluetooth | Windows 10/11 PC and compatible Android, iOS, or other mobile device | Bluetooth-capable host, pairing mode, charged controller, close range | Remove the old device record, toggle Bluetooth, and add the controller again |
| USB-C | Xbox, Windows PC, or another compatible host | USB-C cable with data lines; direct USB port is preferable | Try another data cable, another port, and another computer |
Xbox’s official product wording says, “USB-C cable required for charging (sold separately).” A cable being physically USB-C does not guarantee that it carries data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore troubleshooting: charge and power-cycle the controller
- Charge the controller before testing any wireless method. A low battery can prevent pairing or cause a connection to drop.
- Turn the controller off, wait briefly, and turn it on again. This clears a temporary state without deleting your console or PC settings.
- Keep the controller close to the host while pairing. Once a connection is stable, you can test normal playing distance.
- Disconnect other gamepads temporarily so you can identify the Nano Controller’s entry and avoid pairing the wrong device.
If the controller works with one method, use that working connection to continue diagnosis. For example, a working USB data connection can allow firmware checking even when wireless pairing is failing.

Fix Bluetooth pairing on Windows 10 or Windows 11
1. Put the controller in pairing mode
- Turn on the controller.
- Hold its Connect button until it enters Bluetooth pairing mode. The controller must be actively discoverable; simply powering it on is not enough.
- Place it next to the PC while Windows searches. Move away from unnecessary wireless devices during this first pairing attempt.
2. Remove a stale Xbox controller record
- Open Windows Settings and go to Bluetooth & devices.
- Open the list of paired devices, select the old Xbox controller entry, and choose Remove device.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Put the controller back into pairing mode and choose Add device, then Bluetooth. Select the controller when it appears.
Removing the old record matters when Windows retained an incomplete pairing, an obsolete address, or a profile created during an earlier failed attempt.
3. Run Windows’ Bluetooth checks
Use the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter from the system’s troubleshooting settings. Microsoft lists Bluetooth services, drivers, updates, low battery, and pairing state among possible causes. Install pending Windows updates, restart the PC, and retry the pairing process after the restart. If the controller appears but will not complete pairing, repeat the remove-and-add sequence rather than creating multiple duplicate entries.
4. Investigate a connection that drops
- Check the controller’s battery level and charge it fully enough for testing.
- Reduce distance and obstructions between the controller and PC.
- Move the controller’s receiver position away from busy USB 3.0 devices and hubs; nearby USB 3.0 equipment can interfere with some Bluetooth signals.
- Install current Bluetooth drivers supplied for the PC and apply Windows updates.
- Restart the PC and controller after driver or update installation.
A controller that pairs successfully but disconnects later points more often to battery, range, interference, driver, service, or update conditions than to an inability to enter pairing mode.

Bluetooth on a phone, tablet, or other mobile device
Bluetooth support is intended for compatible mobile devices, but compatibility depends on the device and operating-system implementation. Turn on Bluetooth in the device’s settings, place the controller in pairing mode with the Connect button, and select the controller from the available-device list. Keep it close until the first connection completes.
If it was paired previously but no longer connects, use the mobile device’s option to forget or remove the controller, toggle Bluetooth off and on, restart the mobile device, and pair again. Charge the controller before repeating the attempt. A mobile device may show the controller as paired while a particular game does not accept it; that is an app or game compatibility issue rather than proof that Bluetooth pairing failed.
Pair the controller with an Xbox console over Xbox Wireless
Xbox Wireless is separate from Bluetooth. On the console, use the console’s pairing control and the controller’s Connect button according to the on-screen or console instructions, keeping both devices nearby and the controller charged. Do not expect a Bluetooth pairing created on a PC to substitute for Xbox Wireless pairing with the console.

If the controller works when connected by a USB data cable but will not pair wirelessly with the console, connect it to Xbox Accessories and check for a firmware update. Firmware behavior and update availability can vary by platform, so a Bluetooth connection alone should not be treated as a guaranteed way to perform every controller update.

This is one of the most common points of confusion. USB-C describes the connector shape, not the wiring inside the cable. A charge-only cable can deliver power while omitting the data lines that Windows needs to enumerate a controller. The controller may light up or charge and still be absent from Windows.
Use a known-good data cable
- Replace the current cable with a known-good USB-C cable explicitly capable of data transfer, not only charging.
- Connect the controller directly to the computer, avoiding a hub, monitor port, or dock for the first test.
- Try a different direct USB port on the same computer.
- Watch for Windows to refresh Device Manager or show a newly detected controller. A charging indicator alone is not evidence of data communication.
Cross-test the host
- Use the same controller and known data cable on another computer.
- If the second computer detects it, the original PC’s USB port, drivers, or Windows configuration is the likely problem.
- If neither computer detects it, repeat the test with a second known-good data cable.
Microsoft support specifically recommends a data-capable cable and testing across devices. This process separates a cable fault from a host fault and from a controller fault without relying on the charging light.

Interpret the results
| Result | Most useful conclusion | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Controller charges and appears on another PC | Original PC, port, hub, or driver is the problem | Use a direct port, update Windows and USB drivers, and remove the hub from the test |
| Controller charges but is invisible on every PC with one cable | Cable may be charge-only or defective | Try a verified USB-C data cable |
| Two data cables and two hosts cannot detect it | Controller USB-C port or internal hardware is suspect | Stop repeated plugging and contact Xbox support or pursue warranty service |
| No charging and no detection | Power, cable, port, or controller hardware may have failed | Try a known-good power source and cable, then escalate if there is still no response |
Firmware and software checks
Firmware can affect wireless behavior, and Microsoft’s controller guidance includes firmware checks in troubleshooting. If the controller is usable by cable, open Xbox Accessories on a supported Xbox or Windows setup and look for an available controller update. Follow the app’s prompts and do not disconnect during an update.
Do not assume that every firmware operation is available over Bluetooth. If the app does not offer an update through the current connection, use a verified USB data cable or the platform the app specifies. The exact Xbox Accessories behavior can change by platform and software version.
On Windows, also install pending system updates and current Bluetooth drivers. A driver or Bluetooth service problem can prevent discovery even when the controller itself is charged and in pairing mode.

Diagnose by symptom
“The controller never appears in the Bluetooth list”
- Confirm the Connect button was held long enough to enter pairing mode.
- Charge and power-cycle the controller.
- Remove an old Xbox controller entry, toggle Bluetooth off for about 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter and install Windows updates.
- Test on a second compatible host. If no host can discover it, hardware or pairing-mode failure becomes more plausible.
“Windows says it is paired, but games cannot use it”
Check whether Windows shows the controller as connected, then restart the game with the controller already connected. Some games support only particular input APIs or controller profiles. Test the controller in another compatible game or Windows controller panel to distinguish a game-specific issue from a Bluetooth connection issue.
“It connects, then disconnects”
Start with battery level, distance, and nearby USB 3.0 interference. Then update Bluetooth drivers and Windows, restart the PC, and test with other wireless devices temporarily removed. If the same controller remains stable over USB but not wirelessly, continue with firmware and Bluetooth diagnostics.
“It charges but does not appear over USB”
Assume the cable may be charge-only until proven otherwise. Use a known data cable, a direct port, and another computer. A charging light cannot confirm that the USB data path is working.
“It works by cable but not with Xbox Wireless”
Use the console’s pairing controls again, keep the controller charged, and check for firmware through Xbox Accessories while connected by USB. If wireless pairing fails after those checks but USB remains reliable, contact Xbox support rather than repeatedly deleting unrelated Bluetooth records.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
After testing two known-good USB-C data cables on two direct USB hosts, persistent non-detection points toward the controller’s USB-C port or internal hardware. Likewise, if the controller cannot enter pairing mode, cannot be discovered by any compatible host, and has been charged and power-cycled, software steps are unlikely to resolve the fault.
The available official guidance does not publish a Nano-specific factory-reset sequence, a Nano connection-failure rate, or a guaranteed repair result. Do not use an undocumented button combination as a substitute for support instructions. Record which connection modes work, which cables and hosts were tested, and whether the controller charges; that information will make an Xbox support or warranty claim more efficient.
Quick Recap
A practical recovery order
- Charge the controller and power-cycle it.
- Choose the correct mode: Xbox Wireless for a console, Bluetooth for a compatible PC or mobile device, or USB-C for wired testing.
- For Windows Bluetooth, remove the old entry, toggle Bluetooth off for about 10 seconds, turn it on, re-enter pairing mode, and add the controller.
- Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter, install updates, restart, and check drivers if pairing or stability remains poor.
- For USB, use a known-good data cable, a direct port, and another computer.
- If firmware is offered through Xbox Accessories, update it using the supported wired or platform-specific method.
- Escalate to Xbox support or warranty service when multiple cables and hosts fail to detect the controller.
