The first fix is to identify which “Xbox Nano” you own. Microsoft’s compact wireless XBOX Nano uses XBOX Wireless on consoles and Bluetooth on supported PCs, phones, tablets and TVs. PowerA’s Nano Enhanced Wired Controller is a different product that communicates only through its detachable USB cable. Charging, pairing and firmware steps are not interchangeable.
Use the model-specific checks below, then test the controller on a second supported host. If the fault follows the controller everywhere, stop repeatedly re-pairing it and use the manufacturer’s support or warranty route.

Identify the exact Xbox Nano model
“Xbox Nano” is not one universal hardware model. The two products most often described that way have different connection paths and different failure symptoms.
| Model | Connection | Power path | Typical supported hosts | Cable detail | Useful status clue |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft XBOX Nano Controller | XBOX Wireless on Xbox consoles; Bluetooth on listed Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS, Android and compatible Smart TVs | Internal rechargeable battery | Xbox consoles, compatible Windows 10/11 PCs, mobile devices and compatible TVs | USB-C is required for charging; the cable is sold separately | Bluetooth pairing state and battery level |
| PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S | Wired USB connection | Powered by the connected Xbox USB port | Xbox Series X|S through an available USB port | Detachable 10-foot USB cable with a USB-C connector at the controller | Small white LED illuminates when the wired connection succeeds |
Look at the packaging, nameplate or manual before troubleshooting. A wireless pairing procedure cannot repair a wired PowerA unit, and replacing a battery or Bluetooth entry will not solve a loose USB connection.

Why a Nano controller will not connect or keeps dropping
Most connection complaints fit one of five paths:
- The Microsoft controller has insufficient charge, or its USB-C charging cable is missing, charge-only, damaged or not seated.
- The host is using the wrong connection method: XBOX Wireless is expected on an Xbox console, while Bluetooth is used on the listed non-console hosts.
- An old Bluetooth record or another nearby gamepad is competing with the new pairing.
- The PowerA wired controller has a loose cable, an unpowered console, the wrong TV input or a damaged USB port.
- The problem follows the controller across multiple supported hosts, indicating a possible cable, port, battery or controller fault rather than a single pairing record.
There is no single manufacturer-published cause that explains every repeated disconnection. The useful diagnostic question is whether the failure stays with one host or follows the controller.
Fix the Microsoft wireless XBOX Nano
1. Charge it before attempting to pair
Connect a known-good USB-C cable to the controller and a powered USB port. Leave the controller connected long enough to establish that it is actually receiving power before starting a pairing attempt. Microsoft specifies an internal rechargeable battery and states that a USB-C charging cable is required and sold separately.
If nothing changes, try a second cable and a different powered USB port. A cable that fits mechanically can still be damaged, loose or unsuitable for the charging job. Inspect both ends for bent parts or contamination, and do not force the connector.

2. Select the connection mode that matches the host
| Host | Mode to use | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox console | XBOX Wireless | Do not treat the console setup as a generic Bluetooth pairing. |
| Windows 10/11 PC | Bluetooth, when the PC supports it | A controller can be charged by USB-C without proving that Bluetooth pairing is working. |
| iOS, Android or tablet | Bluetooth | Compatibility depends on the device and operating-system support. |
| Compatible Smart TV | Bluetooth | The TV must support the controller profile and pairing. |
On an Xbox console, start the console’s normal XBOX Wireless controller-pairing process and keep the controller close to the console during it. On a PC, phone, tablet or compatible TV, open the host’s Bluetooth settings and use its normal “add” or “pair new device” command.

3. Remove the old Bluetooth record and pair again
- Open the host device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Find the existing Nano or Xbox controller entry and remove, forget or unpair it.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
- Restart the host device if the old entry continues to reappear or pairing fails immediately.
- Start a fresh pairing search and select the controller when it appears.
Removing the stale record matters when a host remembers an incomplete or corrupted pairing. Do not keep several duplicate entries for the same controller; remove the old records first.
4. Eliminate competing connections
For repeated drops, charge the controller fully enough for a meaningful test, stay within normal Bluetooth range and temporarily disconnect other gamepads and nearby Bluetooth hosts. A controller that remains connected after those devices are removed points toward interference or host state rather than an immediate hardware failure.
5. Test a second supported host
Pair the controller with another compatible device using the correct mode. This separates a host problem from a controller problem:
- If it works on the second host, concentrate on the original console’s wireless pairing state or the original computer, phone or TV’s Bluetooth settings.
- If it disconnects or fails everywhere, inspect the charging cable and connector again, then contact Microsoft/Xbox support or pursue replacement.
Record which hosts were tested and whether the controller connected briefly, stayed connected or never appeared. That information makes a support request more useful than a description such as “it keeps disconnecting.”

6. Understand what a USB-C test does—and does not—prove
Plugging in USB-C can confirm that the battery is receiving power, but Microsoft’s product information cited for this model promises the cable for charging. It does not, by itself, establish wired gameplay or USB data support. Do not conclude that the controller should operate as a wired gamepad unless the documentation for your exact unit confirms that behavior.
Fix the PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller
1. Establish a direct wired connection
- Turn on the Xbox console.
- Connect the supplied detachable USB cable to an available Xbox USB port.
- Connect the USB-C end firmly to the controller’s USB-C port.
- Look for the small white LED. PowerA’s setup information uses that light to indicate a successful connection.
Do not route the cable through an unpowered hub while diagnosing the problem. A direct console port removes an extra point of failure.
2. Check the display and both cable ends
PowerA’s troubleshooting checklist calls out three basic conditions: the Xbox must be powered on, the television must be set to the correct video input and both cable ends must be firmly connected. Verify each condition even if the console appears to be running; a wrong input can make a working controller look unresponsive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Unplug and reseat the cable at the console and controller. If the white LED does not illuminate, try another compatible USB port and inspect the cable for kinks, crushed sections or a connector that feels loose. Because this controller depends on the cable for both power and communication, an intermittent cable can produce apparent disconnects when it is moved.

3. Update firmware only after the connection is stable
PowerA directs owners to its Gamer HQ app for firmware updates. First establish a stable wired connection. Then open Gamer HQ, select the connected controller and follow the app’s current update prompts. Do not begin an update while the cable is cutting in and out, and do not disconnect the controller during the update process.
A firmware update is not a substitute for a missing LED, an unpowered console or a physically loose connector. Fix those conditions first so the app can communicate reliably with the controller.

After trying a second known-good cable or host, examine the USB-C plug and the console port with the power disconnected where practical. Look for looseness, packed debris or visible damage. Use gentle, non-metallic cleaning methods appropriate for the port; never force a plug or scrape contacts with a sharp object.

Use the failure pattern to choose the next step
| Observed pattern | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Microsoft controller never powers up after charging attempts | Try a second known-good USB-C cable and powered port; if there is still no response, seek Microsoft/Xbox support. |
| Microsoft controller pairs with one host but not another | Remove the old Bluetooth entry or reset the original host’s Bluetooth/pairing state. |
| Microsoft controller disconnects only near one host | Reduce distance, remove other gamepads and Bluetooth hosts, then retest. |
| Microsoft controller fails on every supported host | Treat it as possible battery, connector or controller hardware failure and use support or replacement. |
| PowerA white LED never lights | Verify the Xbox is on, reseat both ends, test another Xbox USB port and inspect the cable. |
| PowerA disconnects when the cable moves | Stop flexing the connector, test a known-good compatible cable and inspect the controller and console ports. |
| PowerA connects but Gamer HQ cannot update it | Return to a stable direct wired connection, then retry the app’s current firmware procedure. |
Pairing and testing checklist
Use this short sequence when you want a repeatable diagnosis rather than random resets:
- Read the model name and determine whether the controller is Microsoft wireless or PowerA wired.
- For Microsoft, charge through USB-C with a known-good cable and powered port. For PowerA, connect the detachable cable directly to the Xbox and look for the white LED.
- Match the host to the connection method: XBOX Wireless for an Xbox console, Bluetooth for the supported PC, mobile and TV hosts, or wired USB for the PowerA model.
- Remove stale Bluetooth records before a new wireless pairing attempt.
- Disconnect other gamepads and nearby Bluetooth hosts during the test.
- Try a second supported host, or a second Xbox USB port for the wired model.
- Write down whether the failure is no power, no discovery, immediate dropouts or movement-sensitive disconnects.
This sequence prevents a common diagnostic mistake: changing several variables at once and then not knowing which change helped.
When to stop troubleshooting
Persistent failure after a second known-good cable or host is evidence of a possible cable, port, battery or controller hardware fault. The available manufacturer information does not identify one universal disconnection cause or promise a user repair for all of those conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse Microsoft/Xbox support for the Microsoft wireless controller and PowerA’s support or warranty route for the Nano Enhanced Wired model. Include the exact model, host devices tested, connection mode, cable used, LED behavior and whether the fault follows the controller. Avoid opening the controller or forcing a damaged port while warranty coverage may still apply.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- Start by distinguishing Microsoft’s wireless XBOX Nano from PowerA’s wired Nano Enhanced model.
- Microsoft’s model needs USB-C charging and uses XBOX Wireless on consoles or Bluetooth on the listed non-console hosts.
- PowerA’s model needs its USB cable, a powered Xbox and a correct TV input; its small white LED is the connection indicator.
- Pairing problems that affect one host usually call for removing the old Bluetooth record or checking that host’s state.
- Failures that follow the controller across supported devices are the point to seek manufacturer support or replacement.
