How many people has Xbox laid off?
There are several figures, and they measure different things. Xbox’s own July announcement described a plan for approximately 3,200 role reductions across FY27, including approximately 1,600 that day. The company’s September announcement identified 268 additional eliminations as part of the ongoing reset. Neither announcement provides an audited cumulative total of Xbox job losses since 2023.

Do not simply add the July plan and September’s 268 to derive a final count: Xbox described the September action as part of the ongoing reset, and the figures differ in timing and scope. Nor does “roughly three-quarters” mean that a particular number of jobs had been cut; the company included studio divestitures in that progress description.
What did Xbox announce in September 2026?
On September 22, Xbox said it was eliminating 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. The announcement also described changes to studio reporting and development responsibilities. Xbox said actions completed since July had brought it roughly three-quarters of the way through the previously announced restructuring.

That announcement identifies the areas covered, but it does not name The Coalition as a target. It also does not provide a full studio-by-studio accounting of all roles affected by the broader reset.
Is The Coalition affected by Xbox layoffs?
The Xbox and Communications Workers of America statements available here do not establish that The Coalition is facing new cuts or that its staff fear further layoffs. The September 22 Xbox announcement does not name the studio, and the cited union statements do not provide a Coalition-specific account.

So the headline claim that The Coalition fears new cuts should not be treated as confirmed on the basis of these announcements. The supported conclusion is narrower: Xbox announced cuts across named parts of its first-party organization, but these sources do not verify a new Coalition-specific threat.

What have Xbox workers and their union said?
CWA’s response to the July cuts
The Communications Workers of America (CWA) said members were among those affected by the initial July layoffs. The union said it sought bargaining over severance, internal placement, vendor-contract decisions, and recall rights. CWA also reported that more than 3,500 Xbox workers had chosen to form unions with it since 2022. Read CWA’s July 7 statement.

Rallies and labor allegations
In an August 20 statement, CWA described rallies in the United States and Canada calling attention to layoffs and seeking fair first contracts. The union said it represented nearly 4,000 video-game workers at Xbox in the U.S. and Canada, and said it had filed unfair-labor-practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). CWA’s expectation about the September announcement
After Xbox announced the 268 September eliminations, CWA said it did not expect those specific layoffs to affect union-represented workers. That was the union’s expectation about that announcement, not a guarantee about other employees or future changes. Read CWA’s September 22 statement.

Are more Xbox layoffs coming?
The cited announcements do not establish whether Xbox will announce additional layoffs. Xbox said in September that it was roughly three-quarters of the way through the restructuring it had announced, but that progress estimate includes studio divestitures and is not a promise about future staffing. The 5,750 figure reported by Game Developer is retrospective, and its article says the full scale of the post-merger reductions remains unclear.
