Xbox Labs is a new experimental team inside Xbox, created to turn emerging technology into playable experiences and developer tools. CEO Asha Sharma says its work will test whether games can move more freely between hardware, browsers and creative formats—while Xbox keeps its existing commitments to games, hardware, intellectual property and communities.
What Xbox Labs is
In an October 13, 2026 message to employees, Asha Sharma said she had asked Scott to “stand-up XBOX LABS.” She described it as “a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience.”

The team’s stated method is practical experimentation: build in the open, observe what players and developers do, and judge success by whether more people are playing and creating. That makes Labs different from a conventional product announcement. Xbox has not announced a consumer product, release date or complete staff roster; the message identifies the group’s mission rather than a shipping roadmap.
Sharma’s announcement also places the project in a larger view of gaming. She cites a medium that is about 75 years old, more than three billion players worldwide and over 72 billion hours spent playing Xbox games each year. Xbox compares that annual play time with an estimate of worldwide time spent writing code, saying the gaming figure is roughly five times larger. The point is that gaming is already a huge form of participation, and small changes in how games are built or accessed could affect a very large audience.

What Asha Sharma told Xbox employees
Sharma became Microsoft’s Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft Gaming on February 20, 2026. An editor’s note says the organization became known as XBOX on April 23, 2026, and her title changed to CEO XBOX. Her initial leadership message emphasized great games, a return to core Xbox fans and players, and a future of play across devices.
Her Labs announcement presents experimentation as an addition to those priorities, not a replacement for them. “Our priorities aren’t changing,” she wrote. “We remain committed to the 4Cs, to making great games, to our hardware and to being responsible stewards of IP and the communities built around it.”
That qualification matters because some of the technologies Labs is exploring could disrupt established assumptions about ownership, platforms and distribution. Sharma acknowledges that the possibilities may challenge existing business models, but says they can still be good for players.

The experiments that prompted Xbox Labs
Xbox says recent experiments have rapidly decompiled and rebuilt games for hardware they were never designed to support. The examples in Sharma’s message illustrate several different directions:
- Cross-architecture support: Windows PC builds were translated to run on Apple Silicon hardware.
- Browser play: Ports ran in browsers using WebAssembly and WebGPU, technologies that can bring sophisticated software to a web page instead of a dedicated installation.
- Creative remixing: Major games were remixed into another game’s source code, challenging the usual separation between one title’s technology and another’s.
Xbox characterizes WebGPU as approaching 90% global browser support. That is an Xbox description of adoption, not a promise that every browser, device or game will work identically. The examples are experiments, and the announcement does not say that a particular Xbox title is now officially supported on Apple Silicon or in browsers.
Together, the demonstrations challenge what Xbox calls the assumed tether between software and hardware, as well as the boundary between creation and play. A game could become less dependent on the platform for which it was originally built, while players could take a more active role in shaping or extending experiences.

What Xbox Labs could change for players
Making games easier to access
Portability experiments could eventually reduce the number of platform-specific barriers between a player and a game. Browser delivery, translation to different processor architectures and other compatibility techniques could make some experiences available on devices that were previously excluded. Labs has not promised a universal browser version of Xbox games, so access will depend on technical, legal and performance decisions for each title.

Sharma specifically identifies revival of older games as a possibility. AI-assisted reconstruction, translation and simulation could help preserve games tied to aging hardware or difficult-to-maintain software stacks. The announcement does not name a catalog of games being revived, and it does not announce a release schedule.
Letting more people create and co-create
Labs is also aimed at lowering the barrier to participation. Players might contribute to experiences, while developers could use new systems to prototype mechanics or generate variations for human review. Xbox says the team will share the tools it builds with developers across the industry, although the terms, licensing and availability of those tools have not been announced.

How AI fits into the initiative
Xbox Labs is not described as an AI-only studio. Its remit covers emerging ideas broadly, but the announcement follows Microsoft’s work on generative and interactive game models.
Microsoft’s Muse project describes a world-and-human-action model, or WHAM, developed with Ninja Theory and trained on the multiplayer game Bleeding Edge. Microsoft says Muse models game-world detail, physics and reactions to controller actions, allowing consistent and diverse AI-generated gameplay. Model weights, sample data and an interactive interface were made available through Azure AI Foundry for researchers and developers.

Microsoft says Muse could help revive games tied to aging hardware, prototype gameplay and create new content. It also says creative leaders decide how generative AI is used in each project. Twenty-seven global game creators were interviewed in 2025 to help shape the Muse work, which is evidence of an effort to ground the technology in development practice rather than treating model output as a finished game.

Microsoft Research places its Game Intelligence group within People-Centric AI and describes its work as interactive and generative experiences that empower players and creators. The WHAM work is identified as a collaboration between Microsoft Research and Ninja Theory. These projects provide relevant technical context for Labs, but they are not proof that a public Xbox Labs product already exists.

What remains unchanged
Sharma’s earlier leadership message rejects the idea that Xbox will “flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop.” Her position is that games remain human-crafted art, with innovative technology supporting the people who make them. That statement, together with the Labs announcement, indicates that AI-generated material is intended to be evaluated within creative and business decisions rather than automatically shipped.
Microsoft’s stated responsible-AI principles include fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency and accountability. For Xbox Labs, those principles intersect with additional questions: whether a model has the right to use game data, how creators are credited, how communities are protected and how an experiment becomes a supported product.

For now, Xbox Labs is best understood as an internal experimental group with a player-facing goal: test whether emerging technology can expand where games run, how older games survive and who gets to create. Its significance will depend on which experiments become reliable products and how Xbox resolves the technical, creative and ownership issues that those experiments expose.
