Microsoft is framing Project Helix as its next-generation Xbox console, with support for Xbox console and PC games. Separately, reporting on an internal town hall describes a broader family of devices built around a console starting point. That strategy is taking shape against a difficult US market: Circana-tracked hardware unit sales fell year over year for both Xbox and PlayStation through August 2026, while average prices rose.
What is Project Helix?
Microsoft officially describes Project Helix as its next-generation first-party Xbox console. Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald said it is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games,” with the aim of delivering leading performance for the next console generation. Microsoft says the system will use a custom AMD system-on-a-chip, co-designed for next-generation DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). AMD is the named technology partner for that work.

Those are the announced capabilities, not a complete specification. Microsoft has not announced consumer pricing, final hardware details or a retail release date in its Project Helix announcement. Xbox Wire’s March 11, 2026 announcement is the company’s source for the confirmed product framing.
Will the next Xbox play PC games?
Microsoft says Project Helix is designed to play both Xbox console and PC games. That is the clearest publicly stated distinction in its early description of the hardware. The announcement does not specify which PC storefronts, operating-system features, game compatibility rules or user-interface details will be included, so it would be premature to assume how PC games will be purchased or launched on the console.

When is Project Helix coming out?
Microsoft’s stated milestone is to begin shipping alpha versions of Project Helix hardware to developers in 2027. Ronald described this as a plan to get hardware into developers’ hands; it is not a confirmed date for a consumer launch, preorders or retail availability. Project Helix is still in development and is not available to buy.
Is Project Helix part of a larger Xbox device family?
Inven Global reports that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma characterized the 10th-generation Xbox as a “family of devices,” with a console as the starting point and possible handheld form factors among the wider direction. Inven Global attributes to Sharma the remarks, “There is not one device that fits all” and “We will certainly have a great console first, but we also know that many players will be on the go.” Its account of the town hall was translated from Korean with AI assistance and edited by a native English-speaking editor; the original transcript is not available in the sources cited here. Treat the device-family comments as reported strategy, not a formal list of announced products or specifications.

That reported framing is consistent with, but distinct from, Microsoft’s public strategy statement. In an April 2026 message to Team Xbox, the company said console is at the foundation of its premium experience, identified Project Helix and high-performance accessories as hardware priorities, and described an ecosystem spanning console, PC, mobile and cloud. Microsoft’s Team Xbox message supports that broader ecosystem framing; it does not independently confirm the town-hall account or announce handheld hardware.

Available figures show a decline but do not establish a single cause. In October 2026 coverage, Inven Global and GamesRadar reported Circana-tracked US hardware results through August 2026. The outlets attributed the figures to Circana data and executive director Mat Piscatella; the underlying dataset was not directly reviewed for this account.

| Platform | US hardware unit sales, through August 2026 | Average US hardware price, through August 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox | Down 33% year over year; Inven Global reported the lowest level since tracking began. | $529, up 26% year over year; reported as a record high. |
| PlayStation | Down 25% year over year; Inven Global reported the lowest level since 2013. | $597, up 20% year over year; reported as a record high. |
These are unit-sales changes and average prices, not revenue figures. The comparison is year to date through August 2026 against the same period a year earlier, as reported in coverage citing Circana’s US retail tracking. Piscatella told GamesRadar that “Price sensitivity is becoming a real problem.” That is a useful warning about the market backdrop, but the sales and price figures alone do not prove that higher prices caused the declines. GamesRadar’s report quotes Piscatella and reports the figures; Inven Global’s report provides its account of the data and the town-hall remarks.

The figures sharpen the challenge facing Microsoft, but they do not establish Project Helix’s eventual price, sales prospects or launch timing. Xbox’s reported unit decline was steeper than PlayStation’s in the period, while its reported average price was lower. Both platforms nevertheless saw higher average prices and lower unit sales, so the data point to a difficult US hardware market rather than an Xbox-only downturn.

Microsoft’s public position is to keep console at the center of its premium experience while serving players across other devices and services. Project Helix’s console-first framing and the company’s wider ecosystem language describe that direction; they are not yet a disclosed product lineup beyond the announced console. The next confirmed consumer-facing details will need to clarify what the console can do, when it will ship and at what price.
