This comparison covers the two 2025 Windows 11 handheld PCs developed by Xbox and ASUS: the ROG Xbox Ally and the higher-spec ROG Xbox Ally X. The Ally X adds a faster processor, more memory, twice the listed storage and a larger battery, while the standard Ally is lighter and has the same advertised display.
Choose the standard Ally when the shared Xbox-and-Windows interface matters more than maximum hardware. Choose the 2025 Ally X when you will use the extra memory, 1TB drive, higher-tier processor and 80Wh battery enough to justify its additional weight and price. Check every listing for the model year: ASUS also sells a separate ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026), which is not the 2025 Ally X.

What “Xbox handheld” means in this comparison
Xbox and ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X on June 8, 2025. Both run Windows 11 Home, support PC storefronts and use an Xbox-oriented handheld interface. They are therefore Windows handheld PCs with Xbox software integration, rather than dedicated Xbox consoles with a closed console operating system.
Xbox corporate vice president Roanne Sones described them as “two new handhelds crafted in collaboration with ASUS that combine the power of Xbox with the freedom you expect from Windows.” That is vendor positioning, not an independent performance test; the practical consequence is that your buying decision includes Windows launchers, PC game compatibility and regional service availability as well as hardware specifications.

Processor and memory: what the Ally X is buying you
Higher-tier silicon in the X
The standard Ally uses AMD’s Ryzen Z2 A, while the Ally X uses the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme. Xbox presents the X as the higher-performance model. That makes it the logical candidate for buyers who want more headroom for demanding PC games, multitasking or longer ownership, but the model names are not a substitute for a benchmark. No independent frame-rate, fan-noise or game-by-game testing is established here.

Graphics performance on a Windows handheld also depends on resolution, power settings, driver versions, game settings and whether a title runs natively, through a launcher, by streaming or by remote play. Treat the processor difference as a hardware advantage, not a guaranteed frame-rate percentage.
24GB versus 16GB of RAM
The Ally X has 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory; the Ally has 16GB of LPDDR5X-6400. Handheld PC memory is shared between the operating system and integrated graphics, so the additional 8GB can provide useful room when a game, Windows background tasks and a launcher are open together. It does not guarantee that every game will run faster.
For a buyer who plays one moderately demanding game at a time and closes background software, 16GB may be sufficient. The X’s 24GB is more relevant if you keep several launchers active, stream, record gameplay or intend to keep the device for years as PC requirements rise.
Storage: 512GB or 1TB
The standard Ally includes a 512GB M.2 2280 SSD, while the Ally X includes a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD. A 1TB starting point is valuable for a library containing several large modern PC games, because Windows, launchers and recovery data consume part of the advertised capacity before you install anything.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Both models are listed with upgradeable M.2 2280 SSD storage. That gives the standard Ally a possible lower-cost route to more capacity, but an upgrade adds the price of a compatible drive, installation effort and a need to reinstall or clone Windows. Verify the exact drive specification and your warranty conditions before opening the device.
Do not assume that a microSD card provides the same experience as replacing the internal SSD. The 2025 comparison identifies upgradeable internal M.2 storage, while the separate 2026 X20 listing specifically mentions a microSD Express reader.
Display and controls
Identical published screen specification
Both 2025 models list a 7-inch 1080p IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 500-nit brightness. The screen therefore is not the reason to pay for the Ally X. A 120Hz panel can present supported games and the interface smoothly, but actual frame rate depends on the game and graphics settings. Brightness figures are published specifications, not a guarantee of outdoor visibility in every condition.
Different trigger hardware
The standard Ally lists Hall Effect analog triggers; the Ally X lists impulse triggers. These are physical design differences, not a published comfort or accuracy ranking. If trigger behavior is important for racing, driving or action games, try the exact model or confirm the seller’s return policy rather than assuming one design will suit you.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Battery capacity and carrying weight
The Ally has a 60Wh battery and weighs 670g. The Ally X has an 80Wh battery and weighs 715g. The X therefore adds 20Wh of rated capacity and 45g of weight.
A watt-hour rating is not an hours-of-play result. Runtime changes with processor power limits, screen refresh rate and brightness, game workload, frame-rate targets, wireless radios and background Windows activity. Neither the Xbox comparison nor the ASUS listing establishes a universal number of gaming hours, so do not treat 80Wh as a promise that the X lasts one-third longer.
Weight is similarly a specification rather than a comfort verdict. The 45g difference may matter during long handheld sessions or when packing the device, while the larger battery may matter more to someone who routinely plays away from an outlet. Decide which trade-off matches your use instead of treating either model as universally more portable.
Ports, displays and accessories
Standard Ally connectivity
The standard Ally has two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports. Xbox lists DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0 support for those ports. This arrangement can be useful if your setup needs more than one Type-C connection while docked, but confirm the dock’s own bandwidth, charging and display requirements.
Ally X connectivity
The Ally X replaces one of those ports with a USB4 Type-C port supporting DisplayPort 2.1, Power Delivery 3.0 and Thunderbolt 4 compatibility, while retaining one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port. The higher-spec port may be relevant for a fast external storage device, a high-resolution display or a particular dock. Compatibility still depends on the accessory and cable; a port label alone does not confirm every feature of a specific dock.

Windows and Xbox software experience
Xbox-style interface over Windows 11
Both devices boot Windows 11 Home and provide an Xbox full-screen experience optimized for handheld play. The interface is intended to reduce the friction of navigating a desktop with buttons and sticks, while Windows remains available when you need the desktop, settings or non-game software.
Xbox describes an aggregated library that can show Xbox games, Game Pass titles, Battle.net games and installed games from other leading PC storefronts. Aggregation is a convenience layer: it does not mean every displayed game is installed, that a subscription licenses every title, or that every launcher and game has identical controller support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNative play, cloud play and Remote Play
Xbox says players can play games natively on the handheld, use Xbox Cloud Gaming or use Remote Play from an Xbox console. Cloud and Remote Play require a suitable network connection, and membership, account and regional conditions can apply. Remote Play also depends on access to an Xbox console configured for the feature. Check the game, subscription and region before assuming a title will be available through any one route.
Software rollout is market-dependent
In April 2026, Xbox said the Xbox mode—formerly called the full-screen experience—would roll out to Windows 11 PCs in select markets. It includes a controller-optimized interface and aggregated library while retaining the Windows desktop. Because this is software, the name, release timing and market coverage can change. Confirm what your region and Windows build show at the time of purchase.
Xbox also announced an early-release backward-compatibility feature for PC in July 2026. It began with four original Xbox games on supported PCs and handhelds in supported regions. That is an evolving catalog, not evidence that the complete historic Xbox console library runs natively on either 2025 handheld.
For the latest software scope, see the Xbox library update, the Xbox mode rollout announcement and the backward-compatibility announcement.

2025 Ally X price
ASUS’s US product page listed the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99 on October 13, 2026. ASUS notes that resellers may set their own prices and that displayed prices may exclude taxes and shipping. Treat $999.99 as a time- and market-specific listing, not a worldwide fixed MSRP.
No current official US price for the standard 2025 ROG Xbox Ally was verified alongside that listing. Compare the live price in your country rather than converting the Ally X price or relying on an old launch article.
Use the ASUS 2025 Ally X specification page to confirm the listing, then verify seller, taxes, shipping, return terms and warranty for your region.
Do not confuse the 2025 Ally X with the 2026 X20
ASUS separately lists the ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) at $1,299.99 on its US page. The X20 listing specifies a 7.4-inch 1080p 120Hz OLED display, 24GB LPDDR5X memory, a 1TB SSD and a microSD Express reader. Those are X20 specifications and must not be inserted into a comparison of the 2025 Ally and 2025 Ally X.
ASUS says specifications can change and products may not be available in all markets. The X20’s catalog presence and listed US price do not prove availability where you live. Check the model year and complete product name in the retailer’s title, specifications and warranty documentation. The separate ASUS X20 page is the reference for that newer product.
Which 2025 model fits your priorities?
Choose the standard ROG Xbox Ally when:
- You want the Xbox-oriented Windows interface and PC storefront access at the lower hardware tier.
- You mainly install a smaller rotation of games and can work within a 512GB SSD.
- You value the 670g weight and two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports more than the X’s USB4 port.
- You are comfortable with 16GB of LPDDR5X-6400 memory and do not need the X’s additional headroom.
- The live local price difference is large enough that an SSD upgrade later is acceptable.
Choose the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X when:
- You want the higher-tier Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory.
- You expect to keep many large games installed and prefer a 1TB SSD from the start.
- The 80Wh battery capacity is more important to you than the additional 45g of weight, while remembering that capacity is not measured runtime.
- Your dock, display or peripheral setup specifically benefits from USB4, DisplayPort 2.1 or Thunderbolt 4 compatibility.
- The current regional price fits your budget and you prefer more hardware headroom without moving to the separate X20 generation.
Consider the X20 only for a deliberate 2026 purchase
The X20 is the relevant choice only if you specifically want its newer-generation features, including the listed 7.4-inch OLED display and microSD Express reader, and have confirmed local availability and price. Do not select it accidentally because a retailer shortens “ROG Xbox Ally X20” to “Ally X.”
A practical buying checklist
- Read the full model name. Confirm “ROG Xbox Ally (2025),” “ROG Xbox Ally X (2025)” or “ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026)” rather than relying on a shortened headline.
- Check today’s local price. Compare the same currency, tax treatment, shipping and warranty. The $999.99 US Ally X listing is not a guaranteed price in another market.
- List your must-play games. Check whether each one is installed natively, launched through a supported PC storefront, available through your subscription, playable by cloud or usable through Remote Play in your region.
- Estimate storage honestly. If 512GB will force constant uninstalling, price an internal M.2 2280 upgrade as well as the 1TB X.
- Match the ports to your accessories. Confirm the exact dock, monitor resolution, charging wattage, cable and peripheral requirements before choosing between two USB 3.2 ports and the X’s USB4/DisplayPort 2.1 option.
- Decide how you travel with it. Compare 670g against 715g and 60Wh against 80Wh, without translating either figure into an unverified number of playing hours.
- Verify software availability. Xbox mode, aggregated-library behavior, cloud services and backward-compatibility support can vary by market and change through updates.
- Keep return options in mind. Because comfort, trigger feel, fan behavior and game-specific performance are not established by the published specifications, a return window is valuable if those factors determine satisfaction.
What the published specifications cannot tell you
The two 2025 comparison pages establish component choices, capacities, ports, weight and operating system. They do not establish a universal battery-runtime number, sustained frame rates, fan noise, temperatures, screen response, long-session comfort or compatibility for every PC game. Those outcomes vary with software updates, power settings, drivers, peripherals, network conditions and the individual title.
Use the specifications to narrow the decision, then verify the games and accessories that matter to you. A higher component tier is a reason to investigate the Ally X; it is not proof that every game will run better or that the extra cost will improve your particular setup.
Bottom line
The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X share the same 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS screen, Windows 11 Home foundation and Xbox-oriented library interface. The standard Ally is lighter and offers two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports. The Ally X adds the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of faster memory, a 1TB SSD, an 80Wh battery and USB4 connectivity, but weighs more and costs more. Pick between them using your local price, storage needs, dock requirements and tolerance for weight; check the model year before buying so the 2026 X20 does not get mistaken for the 2025 Ally X.
