There are three different ways to play Xbox games on a handheld or another portable screen, and they are not interchangeable. Remote Play streams a game installed on your own Xbox console. Cloud Gaming streams supported titles from Microsoft’s servers and requires a supported device and subscription. A Windows handheld can install and run compatible PC games locally, while also offering Cloud Gaming and Remote Play.
The right choice depends on whether you already own an Xbox, whether the game you want is available in the cloud or as a Windows PC version, and whether you want streaming convenience or local performance. The comparison below separates those paths so you can choose without assuming that every Xbox console game works on every handheld.

The three Xbox handheld options at a glance
| Option | Where the game runs | Xbox console required? | Library available | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Remote Play | Your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console | Yes | Games installed on that console, including applicable Game Pass installs | Owners who want to use another screen without buying a second gaming system |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Microsoft’s cloud service | No personal console is identified as a requirement in the cited product material | Supported cloud-playable games; catalog and account terms vary | Players who want instant access without installing games locally |
| Windows handheld local play | The handheld’s own PC hardware | No, for compatible Windows PC games | Supported PC games from available PC storefronts | Players who want local installs, offline capability where supported, and storefront flexibility |
A Windows handheld can combine all three experiences, but the libraries remain separate. A game being installed on your Xbox does not automatically make it a native Windows PC game, and a PC game does not automatically become available through Cloud Gaming.
Xbox Remote Play: use the console you already own
Remote Play turns your Xbox console into the source of the stream. The console runs the game, sends the video and audio to a supported receiving device, and receives your controller input in return. ASUS describes the ROG Xbox Ally use case as streaming games installed on an Xbox console, including applicable Game Pass titles.

What Remote Play requires
- An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console with remote features enabled.
- The game installed on that console and available to the account using Remote Play.
- A supported receiving device, such as a compatible handheld, phone, tablet or computer.
- A network connection strong enough for two-way game streaming. The available product material does not establish a universal speed or latency threshold.
- The console powered on or placed in Sleep mode, according to ASUS’s Ally guidance.
The console remains part of the setup even when you are playing in another room. Remote Play is therefore not a way to play without access to your Xbox; it is a way to extend that Xbox to another screen.
Remote Play setup sequence
- On the Xbox console, open the system settings and enable its remote-play features. The exact menu wording can change with system updates, so use the current Xbox settings labels shown on your console.
- Install or open the Xbox app or the supported Remote Play interface on the receiving device.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the console.
- Choose the console and start a game that is installed and ready to launch.
- Connect a controller if the receiving device does not provide suitable physical controls. A compatible Xbox Wireless Controller can be useful with a phone or tablet, but the cited material does not establish one particular controller as universally required.
Remote Play’s strengths and limits
- Strength: you can access your own installed console library rather than waiting for a title to appear in a cloud catalog.
- Strength: there is no separate handheld PC installation needed; the console does the rendering work.
- Limit: the console must be configured, available and connected. A powered-off console that is not in the required standby state cannot provide the stream.
- Limit: picture quality and responsiveness depend on the connection between the console, network and receiving device. No measured latency, battery or image-quality results are established here.
- Limit: Remote Play does not create a local copy of the Xbox game on the handheld.
Xbox Cloud Gaming: stream supported games without your console
Cloud Gaming runs the game on Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure rather than on your personal Xbox. The official product material for the Ally family states that the feature requires a supported device, while Microsoft Store information adds a subscription requirement. The exact plan, catalog, regional eligibility and supported-device list can change, so check the terms shown for your country and account before subscribing.
What Cloud Gaming does and does not provide
Cloud Gaming gives you access to a catalog of supported titles. It is not a mirror of every game you own, every game installed on your console or every Windows PC title. Availability can depend on the game, service terms, region, account status and the device being used.
- You do not need to keep your own Xbox console running for the cloud session.
- You generally need an eligible subscription and a supported device.
- Games are streamed rather than installed, so local storage requirements are lower.
- Gameplay still depends on network conditions, and the available evidence does not provide a guaranteed bandwidth or latency figure.
- A game can leave or enter the supported catalog, so confirm availability when you are ready to play.
How to start a cloud session
- Confirm that Cloud Gaming is available for your country, account and subscription tier.
- Check that the specific game is currently listed as cloud-playable. Do not infer this from the fact that it is available for Xbox console or Windows PC.
- Use a supported browser, app or handheld interface on a compatible device.
- Sign in to the account with the required subscription.
- Pair a controller or use the control method supported by the device, then launch the title from the cloud catalog.
When Cloud Gaming is the better choice
Cloud Gaming is most practical when you want to start quickly, have limited storage, or do not own an Xbox console. It also avoids downloading a large PC game to a handheld. The trade-off is dependence on the service’s catalog and your connection: a title may be unavailable even if you own it elsewhere, and streaming responsiveness can vary.
Windows handhelds: play compatible PC games locally
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs developed with Xbox. Xbox describes the family as supporting native play, Cloud Gaming where available and Remote Play from an Xbox console. Microsoft’s Windows positioning also emphasizes access to PC storefronts and applications, which is a different capability from streaming Xbox console games.

What local Windows play means
With local play, the handheld installs a Windows PC version and renders it on its own processor and graphics hardware. You can use supported PC storefronts, install applications such as communication or streaming tools, and use compatible mods. Microsoft executive Roanne Sones described this flexibility in the June 9, 2025 Windows Experience Blog announcement, but that statement is product positioning rather than an independent performance test or guarantee for every game.
Local PC play is the option to examine when you want to play away from a network, keep a game installed, or use PC-specific features. It still requires that the game have a compatible Windows PC release and that the handheld meet its system requirements.

Checking whether a PC game is suitable
Microsoft’s Handheld Compatibility Program introduces a Windows Performance Fit indicator and says the program is launching alongside the Xbox Ally family and will be available on supported Windows 11 handhelds. Treat the indicator as a compatibility aid, not a substitute for checking a game’s requirements and current patches.
- Check whether the title has a Windows PC release rather than only an Xbox console release.
- Review the handheld compatibility indicator when it is shown for that title.
- Compare the game’s CPU, GPU, memory and storage requirements with the exact handheld configuration.
- Confirm controller support, text readability and launcher requirements before buying.
- Allow storage for the game, updates and shader or cache files; local installs can be large even when the handheld itself is portable.
Which library are you actually trying to play?
| If your game is… | Most direct route | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Installed on your Xbox console | Remote Play | Your console must have remote features enabled and be on or in Sleep mode for the described Ally setup. |
| Listed as cloud-playable | Cloud Gaming | You need the required subscription, supported device and regional access. |
| Available as a compatible Windows PC game | Local play on a Windows handheld | You need the PC version and enough hardware, storage and controller support. |
| Only released for Xbox console and absent from the cloud catalog | Remote Play, if you own an Xbox and have it installed | A Windows handheld does not convert a console-only game into a native PC install. |
Decision guide: choose by your priority
You already own an Xbox and mainly want another screen
Start with Remote Play. It uses the console library you already maintain and avoids buying a Windows handheld solely for streaming. Confirm the console’s remote settings and standby behavior first.

You do not own an Xbox and want the simplest streaming route
Check Cloud Gaming’s current subscription, device, region and catalog rules. This route is designed around supported cloud titles, not your personal console library.
You want local installs and PC storefronts
Consider a Windows handheld. It gives you native PC play and can still add Cloud Gaming or Remote Play, but you must evaluate each game as a Windows title and verify the exact hardware configuration.
You want all three options in one device
A Windows handheld such as an ROG Xbox Ally model is the broadest of the three approaches because Xbox describes it as supporting native play, Cloud Gaming where available and Remote Play. That breadth does not mean every game is available in every mode, and the hardware cost is unnecessary if you only need Remote Play on a phone or tablet.

“I own the game, so it must be playable from the cloud.”
Ownership and cloud availability are different. Look for the title in the current Cloud Gaming catalog and verify the account and subscription terms.
“A handheld marked Xbox can install every Xbox game.”
Xbox branding does not erase the distinction between console software and Windows PC software. Use Remote Play for an installed console game, Cloud Gaming for a supported cloud title, or a native Windows install when a compatible PC version exists.

“Remote Play works with the console completely off.”
For the Ally scenario described by ASUS, the console must be on or in Sleep mode, with remote features enabled. Check those settings before troubleshooting the handheld.
“The compatibility indicator guarantees perfect performance.”
The Handheld Compatibility Program is intended to help assess fit. It is not a substitute for checking the game’s requirements, updates and controls on your exact model.
“A stronger handheld will fix a poor stream.”
Remote Play and Cloud Gaming are streaming paths. A faster handheld cannot remove network congestion between the service or console and the receiving device. Improve the network path and confirm service availability before replacing hardware.
What to verify before committing
- Current subscription tier and whether it includes the cloud access you want.
- Country or regional eligibility for Cloud Gaming.
- The current cloud catalog entry for each game you care about.
- Whether your Xbox console supports and has enabled Remote Play.
- Whether the console will remain on or in Sleep mode when you are away.
- Whether a game has a Windows PC edition suitable for the handheld.
- Exact memory, storage, processor and graphics configuration of the model sold in your region.
- Current price, retailer stock and warranty terms, which can change independently of the feature set.
Service rules, catalogs, supported devices, regional access and hardware availability are volatile. Recheck those details immediately before purchase or subscription; the distinctions between console Remote Play, Cloud Gaming and local Windows play are the stable part of the decision.
