Xbox Gift Cards vs Microsoft Store Credit: What’s the Difference?

There is no separate Xbox-only wallet. An Xbox gift card and a Microsoft gift card both add their value to the recipient’s Microsoft account balance after redemption. That balance can then pay for eligible purchases from Microsoft Store online, on Windows, or on Xbox. The useful distinction is not the card’s branding; it is the product being bought, the account’s region, and Microsoft’s eligibility rules.

For most gifts, choose the card denomination and format that are easiest for the recipient to redeem in their country. Before buying, check whether the intended purchase is an eligible game, app, movie, TV show, accessory, hardware item, or Xbox subscription rather than Microsoft 365 or another excluded product.

The short answer: Xbox and Microsoft gift cards fund the same account balance

Microsoft says Xbox gift cards, Microsoft gift cards, download codes, and tokens work the same way once redeemed to a Microsoft account. The full value is credited to that account’s balance; it does not remain in an Xbox-specific purse. The balance can be used for eligible Microsoft Store purchases online, on Windows, and on Xbox.

“Microsoft Store credit” is therefore a useful reader-facing description of the funds, not the name of a second wallet that is different from an Xbox gift-card balance. A card’s label may help a buyer choose a gift for a console player, but it does not limit the redeemed funds to Xbox games.

Eligibility still matters. Microsoft allows account funds for many games, apps, movies, TV shows, hardware items, and accessories, subject to region and product rules. Xbox-related subscriptions can qualify, while Microsoft 365 subscriptions cannot be bought with gift-card funds.

The practical result is that the recipient’s shopping goal, location, and account setup are more important than whether the package says Xbox or Microsoft.

What “Microsoft Store credit” means

When people say Microsoft Store credit, they usually mean money already attached to a Microsoft account. It can come from an Xbox-branded gift card, a Microsoft-branded gift card, a redeemed code, or another account-funding method. Once credited, Microsoft treats it as account balance at checkout.

That wording should not be confused with a retailer-specific coupon or a one-product discount. Account funds are a payment source for eligible Microsoft products and content. They are not cash, cannot be exchanged for cash, and cannot generally be used to buy another gift certificate or similar payment product, except where local law requires otherwise.

Why the branding can be misleading

An Xbox card is marketed toward console players, so a buyer may assume it can pay only for Xbox games. A Microsoft card looks broader, but after redemption the two types are handled the same way. The brand printed on the card does not create different spending categories inside the account.

What the balance does not guarantee

Having money in the account does not make every Microsoft product purchasable. A product must be offered for the recipient’s region, support account-balance payment, and meet Microsoft’s category rules. A game available on Xbox may have different availability on Windows, and hardware eligibility can vary by country.

How to redeem either card safely

The exact button names can vary between Microsoft Store and Xbox interfaces, but the account decision is the same: redeem the code while signed in to the Microsoft account that should own the funds.

  1. Confirm the recipient account. Check the Microsoft account email or gamertag that will make the purchase. Once redeemed, the value belongs to that account and cannot be moved to another person or Microsoft account.
  2. Check the card’s country and currency. A card issued for one jurisdiction may not redeem on an account registered in another. Do this before opening a physical card or sending a code.
  3. Sign in to Microsoft’s redemption experience. Use the Microsoft Store or Xbox redeem-code option while logged in to the intended account.
  4. Enter the code exactly as issued. Keep the code private. Do not post it in a screenshot, chat, marketplace listing, or support forum.
  5. Verify the confirmation account and amount. Read the account identifier and value shown before accepting the redemption.
  6. Check the account balance. Confirm that the expected amount appears before attempting a purchase.
  7. Use the balance at checkout. If the item is eligible and costs less than or equal to the available funds, the balance can cover it. If it costs more, Microsoft can apply the balance first and charge the remainder to another registered payment method.

Why redeeming on the wrong account is a serious mistake

Microsoft’s terms make account balances non-transferable. Customer support may not be able to move a redeemed value to a family member’s account, so verify the account before confirming the code rather than trying to correct the error afterward.

What you can buy with the balance

Games

Eligible Xbox and Windows games are the most common use. The card type does not determine whether a game is allowed; the Store listing, account region, and payment rules do. A console-focused gift can therefore help with a Windows game if that title is sold through an eligible Microsoft Store checkout.

Apps and software

Some apps and other software can be purchased with account funds. Eligibility is product-specific, so check the checkout payment options rather than assuming every Microsoft Store listing accepts gift-card balance.

Movies and TV shows

Microsoft lists movies and TV shows among the content that may be obtained with account funds. Availability and catalog rights differ by region, and a title offered in one country may not be offered in another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware and accessories

In most regions, Microsoft says account funds can be used for eligible Surface, Xbox, and accessory purchases. Taiwan is specifically excluded from gift-card hardware purchases in Microsoft’s guidance. A recipient planning to buy a console, controller, or other device should verify local checkout eligibility before relying on a gift card.

Xbox subscriptions

Microsoft says Xbox-related subscriptions can be purchased with account funds, and its spending guidance describes gift-card money as usable for Xbox subscriptions. Eligibility can depend on the region, the subscription offer, and the checkout flow, so treat “Xbox subscription” as the supported category rather than extending the rule to every Microsoft service.

Microsoft 365 and other excluded subscriptions

Microsoft 365 subscriptions cannot be bought with Microsoft account funds from a gift card. Do not buy an Xbox or Microsoft gift card for someone whose specific goal is a Microsoft 365 plan. The card may still be useful for eligible Store content, but it will not pay for that subscription.

Items the balance cannot become

Gift-card funds cannot be converted into cash and cannot be used for cash, gift certificates, or similar payment products, except where required by law. They are also not a general-purpose bank balance that can be sent to another account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Region, currency, and travel restrictions

Region is the most important practical caveat when giving either card. Microsoft ties denominations and account funds to the jurisdiction in which the account is registered. The balance cannot be converted to another currency, and Microsoft says funds do not move with an account when its country or region changes.

If the recipient moves countries

Microsoft recommends changing region only when moving for a long time because products obtained in one region may not work in another. Any existing account balance remains associated with the original region rather than following the user across borders. A person who is about to relocate should use or plan the balance before changing regions, and should not assume a new-country Store will accept the old funds.

If you are buying from another country

Match the card’s currency and jurisdiction to the recipient’s account, not to the buyer’s location. A discounted foreign listing is not a safe bargain if the code cannot be redeemed on the recipient’s account. Microsoft’s local terms can differ, so check the current rules for the recipient’s country before purchasing.

Balance limits, expiration, and fees

Maximum balance and adding funds

Microsoft’s current limits guidance lists a general maximum of USD 1,000, or the local-currency equivalent, for money added to or held in an account. Country-specific rules can be lower or otherwise different. Microsoft gives France as an example with a EUR 150 limit in a 30-day period. These are policy limits, not a promise that every account or country uses the same threshold; consult the current limits page when loading a large amount.

Ordinary balance does not expire

Microsoft says the standard, non-promotional balance added by a gift card has no expiration date and no balance-keeping fee. That does not mean every credit ever displayed in an account lasts forever.

Promotional balance is different

Promotional credit follows the expiration date and other conditions stated in the promotion. Keep promotional and gift-card funds conceptually separate when planning a purchase: the no-expiration rule applies to ordinary balance, not automatically to a promotional award.

What happens when the balance is too small

You do not need an exact card value for every purchase. Microsoft says checkout applies available account balance first, then allows a different registered payment method to cover the shortfall. For example, a 20-unit balance can contribute toward a 25-unit eligible item, with the remaining 5 units charged to the alternate method.

This split payment works only when the product and account support account-balance payment and a second payment method is registered. It does not bypass regional restrictions, subscription exclusions, or product-level ineligibility.

Which card should you give?

Give an Xbox-branded card when the presentation matters

An Xbox card is a sensible choice for a known Xbox player because the branding immediately communicates the intended use. It still provides the same Microsoft account funds after redemption, so the recipient is not locked into Xbox games if their needs change.

Give a Microsoft-branded card for a mixed-device household

If the recipient uses Windows, Xbox, and Microsoft Store entertainment, Microsoft branding may better signal the broader range of eligible purchases. The underlying balance rules remain the same.

Ask about the account region for an international gift

For a recipient in another country, region and currency should decide the purchase. An apparently generous denomination is unusable if it cannot be redeemed on the recipient’s account. Buy for the account’s jurisdiction rather than the buyer’s.

Do not use either card as a Microsoft 365 gift

If the intended present is Microsoft 365, choose a payment method or offer specifically accepted for that subscription. Gift-card balance is not an eligible payment source for Microsoft 365.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the amount with the account limit in mind

Large gifts can run into country-specific limits, including limits on how much may be added during a period. For a substantial purchase, check the recipient’s local rules and consider whether one card or several redemptions would approach the account maximum.

Common problems and how to avoid them

“The code worked, but I cannot see an Xbox balance”

That is expected. The value appears in the Microsoft account balance rather than a separate Xbox wallet. Check the signed-in account and its balance in the Store or Xbox payment area.

“The recipient cannot redeem the code”

First verify the account’s country, the card’s currency, and whether the code was already redeemed. A region mismatch is a likely explanation when a code is valid but rejected for the intended account.

“The purchase will not accept the balance”

Check whether the item is an eligible Microsoft Store product, whether the account region supports it, and whether the category is excluded. Microsoft 365 is one explicit exclusion. Hardware eligibility can also vary, with Taiwan excluded from gift-card hardware purchases in Microsoft’s guidance.

“The balance is not enough”

Ensure a second payment method is registered. Microsoft says the account balance is applied first and the alternate method pays the difference when the checkout supports split payment.

“I redeemed it to the wrong account”

Do not assume the funds can be transferred later. Microsoft’s terms state that account balance cannot be transferred to another person or Microsoft account. Confirm the account before redemption to prevent this error.

“The balance disappeared after changing country”

Microsoft says account funds do not move when the account changes region and cannot be transferred between regions. A regional move should be planned around the existing balance and previously acquired content.

A practical checklist before buying

  • Ask which Microsoft account will redeem the card.
  • Match the card’s currency and jurisdiction to that account.
  • Confirm that the intended purchase is not Microsoft 365 or another excluded product.
  • For hardware, check local eligibility; Taiwan is excluded from gift-card hardware purchases in Microsoft’s guidance.
  • For a large amount, check the current country-specific balance and loading limits.
  • Remember that ordinary gift-card balance does not expire, while promotional credit can have its own deadline.
  • Tell the recipient that redeemed funds cannot be moved to another account or region.

Bottom line for buyers

Choose an Xbox gift card for Xbox-themed presentation or a Microsoft gift card for a more platform-neutral gift, but do not expect different spending power after redemption. Both add funds to the same Microsoft account balance. The decisive checks are the recipient’s account region, the product category, subscription eligibility, and applicable balance limits. Xbox subscriptions and many Store products can qualify; Microsoft 365 cannot. Ordinary gift-card funds do not expire, but promotional credit can, and a balance cannot be transferred between accounts or regions.
