What is the Xbox refund policy?
Microsoft’s general rule is that digital goods, including games and add-on content, are not returnable unless the offer itself or applicable law makes you eligible for a refund. That means an Xbox purchase is not automatically refundable simply because you changed your mind. Eligibility depends on the terms attached to the offer and the market in which the purchase was made.

Microsoft summarizes the possibility this way: “If you purchased a game or app from Microsoft, you may be able to request a refund.” You can read the current general guidance in Get a refund on apps and games bought from Microsoft.
The important distinction is between requesting a refund and being eligible for one. The online form lets Microsoft evaluate the transaction; it is not an automatic return button. Xbox’s market-specific terms can add conditions, and consumer-protection law in your country may provide rights that differ from the general Microsoft rule.

How to request a refund for an Xbox game
Use the account and purchase record associated with the transaction. The same process applies whether you begin from Microsoft’s refund guidance or from your Xbox order history.
- Open Microsoft’s refund route. Start with the Microsoft Support refund article or the Xbox digital-games refund/order-history flow linked from it.
- Sign in with the purchasing Microsoft account. This must be the account that completed the Xbox transaction. If you use a different account, the game may not appear in the list of eligible purchases.
- Find the transaction. Review the listed purchases and select the Xbox game or add-on you want Microsoft to evaluate. Check the title carefully if you bought a bundle, deluxe edition, or several add-ons.
- Select Request a refund. The option appears beside a purchase when the online system can accept a request for that item. Its presence allows you to submit a request; it does not promise approval.
- Choose or enter the reason. Give an accurate explanation of what happened. Keep the description specific to the selected transaction rather than describing a different order.
- Continue and submit. Review the item and reason, then complete the submission. Save the confirmation or take a screenshot so you can refer to the request later.
- Check Refund status. Microsoft provides a Refund status tab for updates. The support guidance says processing may take up to 72 hours.
Microsoft also documents the process in Get a refund for apps and games purchased from Microsoft Store. The labels can vary slightly by region or by whether you start in order history, but the essential sequence is the same: identify the purchase, request a refund, provide a reason, and submit.
What the 72-hour estimate does—and does not—mean

Do not treat 72 hours as a promise that money will be back in your account by then. It is Microsoft’s estimate for processing the request. Once approved, the payment provider may need additional time to show the credit, and that timing is not specified in the cited Microsoft guidance.

The general Microsoft guidance covers digital games and add-on content purchased through Microsoft. Each item must be identified in the Microsoft account’s purchase history, and the request is evaluated under the terms for that offer and market.

Purchases made through another retailer
If you paid a separate retailer or another platform rather than Microsoft, Microsoft’s Xbox refund form may not control that transaction. The seller that charged you normally handles its own returns. Check the receipt or payment statement to identify the merchant before submitting a request; sending a Microsoft request for a transaction that is not in your Microsoft purchase history will not move it to the correct seller.
Subscriptions, physical products, and other transactions
The procedure described here is for digital Xbox games and add-on content. A subscription, console, accessory, disc, or service purchased under different terms can have a different cancellation or return process. Select the exact transaction type in your account and follow the instructions presented for that item.
Why Microsoft may not show a refund button
The order-history system does not necessarily display Request a refund for every transaction. The absence of the button is a signal to troubleshoot the account, item, or applicable terms—not proof of a universal Xbox rule.
- Wrong Microsoft account: Sign out and sign in with the account that actually paid for the game. Family members can have different Microsoft accounts even when they use the same console.
- Wrong purchase record: Check whether you selected a related add-on, bundle, or edition instead of the original game. Open the order details and match the title and transaction.
- Different seller: A code or purchase completed through another retailer may not appear in Microsoft order history. Contact the merchant shown on the receipt.
- Regional or offer terms: Eligibility can depend on the country or region and on the terms attached to the offer. Review the Xbox Digital Game Purchase Refund Terms for your market.
- Temporary account or page problem: Refresh the order-history page, try a current browser, and check again after signing in. If the terms page loads dynamically and does not display its text, use Microsoft Support’s general refund article and avoid relying on unofficial thresholds.
If the item still cannot be selected, do not submit a request for a different purchase merely to reach an agent. Record the order number, title, date, and account used, then use Microsoft Support’s available contact options for account-specific help.

Xbox-specific limits: what is confirmed and what is not
The Xbox Support page titled Digital Game Purchase Refund Terms is the place to check the conditions for your market. However, the accessible Microsoft guidance does not publish a universal Xbox age-of-purchase limit, play-time limit, or other numeric threshold that can safely be applied everywhere.
Do not assume that a commonly repeated “14-day” period, “two-hour” play limit, or similar number is an official rule for every Xbox purchase. Such figures may belong to another platform, a particular country, a specific promotion, or an outdated version of the terms. Verify any condition on the live Xbox terms page for the market and offer involved. If the page does not display the details, ask Microsoft Support to confirm the rule that applies to your transaction instead of treating an unverified number as guaranteed.
This qualification matters in both directions. A request that falls outside a published Xbox condition may be declined, while local consumer law can sometimes provide a remedy even when a general digital-goods policy would not. The terms and law governing the transaction—not an internet summary—determine the final decision.

- Identify the exact game, edition, bundle, or add-on.
- Keep the order date and order number from the receipt or order history.
- State the reason accurately and keep it tied to the selected item.
- Note whether Microsoft charged you directly or another retailer processed the payment.
- Save the submission confirmation and the date you sent it.
A clear explanation is preferable to a long one. Describe the relevant fact, such as selecting the wrong edition or experiencing a purchase problem, without claiming a legal entitlement you have not verified. Microsoft’s form is for evaluating the transaction; it is not a place to demand approval.

While the request is pending
Use the Refund status tab rather than repeatedly submitting the same request. Multiple submissions for one transaction can make it harder to tell which request is current. Wait through the stated processing window, then check the status again.
If Microsoft approves the request
An approval means the refund has been authorized for issue. It does not guarantee an instant balance change. Microsoft’s 72-hour estimate concerns processing the request; the card issuer, bank, or other payment provider controls when the credit appears on the original payment method.

If Microsoft declines the request
Review the status message and the terms for your market. If you believe the decision conflicts with the offer terms or consumer law, contact Microsoft Support with the order details and the explanation shown in your status. Do not present an unverified time or play limit as evidence; ask support to identify the rule applied to your transaction.
If the refund is approved but missing
First confirm in Refund status that Microsoft marked the refund as issued. Then check the original payment account and allow for the provider’s posting time. If the credit remains absent, contact the payment provider with Microsoft’s refund confirmation, and contact Microsoft again if the status itself is unclear.
