There is no single winner. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the stronger all-round package if you use an Xbox console and PC, want selected eligible games on their release day, play through the cloud, or would use its included partner benefits. PlayStation Plus Extra is usually the better-priced choice for an existing PlayStation owner who mainly wants a large, rotating download catalog. Premium is worth the higher PlayStation price only when its classics, game trials, or cloud streaming are features you will actually use.
Prices and catalogs change, so compare the specific games you expect to play and the hardware you already own rather than relying on the largest advertised game count. The prices below are current US storefront figures checked in October 2026; other regions can differ.

Xbox Game Pass vs. PlayStation Plus at a glance
These are not two single products. Each service has multiple tiers with different libraries, release timing, online features and streaming options. The closest practical comparisons are Game Pass Ultimate with PlayStation Plus Premium, and Game Pass Premium with PlayStation Plus Extra, but the bundles are not equivalent.

Which service is better for the console or computer you already own?
If you own a PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4
PlayStation Plus is the natural first comparison because its download catalog and most console benefits are designed for PlayStation hardware. Extra is the value-focused choice when you want a broad rotating library without paying for Premium-only features. Essential is enough if your priority is online multiplayer and the monthly games rather than a large back catalog.
Choose Premium instead of Extra only when you will use at least one of its distinguishing features: older PlayStation games in the Classics Catalog, time-limited game trials, or cloud streaming. Paying for Premium solely because its name sounds complete does not create value if you download current games and never stream or try them.

If you own an Xbox console
Game Pass Premium is the lower-cost catalog option, while Ultimate adds the largest advertised library, selected eligible releases on day one, cloud access and the EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics bundle. Premium’s new Xbox-published games are described as arriving within one year, so it is not a substitute for Ultimate when playing a qualifying release immediately is the reason you subscribe.
If you play mainly on Windows PC
PC Game Pass is the direct fit at $13.99 per month. It includes 300+ PC games, day-one titles and EA Play on PC. Ultimate can make sense if you also want Xbox-console access, cloud streaming or the other included services; otherwise, paying for console-oriented benefits may not improve your PC value.
If you own more than one platform
Game Pass Ultimate is the only option in this comparison that explicitly combines Xbox console and PC access in one tier. That cross-device access can outweigh its higher monthly price when you regularly play on both systems. A PlayStation Plus subscription does not turn a PlayStation catalog into an Xbox or PC library, so do not count games on a platform you cannot use as part of your personal value calculation.
Catalog size is less important than catalog fit
Microsoft lists 50+ games for Essential, 200+ for Premium, 500+ for Ultimate and 300+ for PC Game Pass. Sony describes the Extra Game Catalog as containing hundreds of games and maintains a separate catalog page covering current catalog titles, classics and trials at PlayStation Plus games. Those figures are useful for understanding scale, but they are not a promise that the same genres, publishers or individual games appear on both services.

- GAME PASS ULTIMATE: Play new games on day one, and enjoy hundreds of high-quality games on console, PC, and cloud. Game Pass Ultimate also includes online console multiplayer, EA Play, and other great member benefits.

Before subscribing, make a short list of the games you would realistically start in the next one to three months. Check each title in the current Xbox or PlayStation catalog, confirm the platform version and note whether it is a downloadable game or a stream-only option. A subscription is poor value if its headline library is full of games you will not launch.
Games can leave a catalog
Sony warns that catalog titles can have end dates, and monthly games require an active membership to keep playing them. Microsoft and Sony can also change their lineups, so treat a catalog as temporary access rather than ownership. If a game is your main reason to join, check its current listing and any displayed removal date before beginning a long playthrough.
Day-one timing is not identical
Xbox Ultimate includes eligible day-one releases, and PC Game Pass also advertises day-one titles. Microsoft’s wording does not include every release: its Ultimate information specifically excludes Call of Duty titles. Game Pass Premium promises selected new Xbox-published games within one year, not on launch day.
The PlayStation plan descriptions reviewed here emphasize monthly games, the rotating Game Catalog and Premium features. They do not establish day-one availability for every PlayStation first-party release. Avoid assuming that either service guarantees every publisher’s new game on release day; verify the individual title.

Cloud gaming changes the calculation
Xbox cloud hours from November 2026
In a September 3, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement, Microsoft said monthly cloud gaming time included with Game Pass will change beginning in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium and 5 hours for Essential. The announcement is at Upcoming Changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Microsoft said pricing for additional hours, the games eligible for those hours and market availability would be explained in November. Those later terms should be checked before you rely on cloud gaming as your primary way to play. Do not treat the announced hour allowances as unlimited streaming or assume that extra-hour prices are already settled.
PlayStation Plus Premium streaming
PlayStation lists cloud streaming for Premium on PS4 and PS5 consoles and on PC. It states that at least 5 Mbps is required, with 15 Mbps recommended for 1080p streaming. Availability excludes some overseas territories, and Sony notes that not every title can be streamed. Connection quality, regional availability and the specific game’s streaming eligibility therefore matter as much as the Premium price.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For occasional streaming, either service may be useful if your connection and region qualify. For frequent cloud play, compare the announced Xbox monthly cap with PlayStation’s Premium requirements and your expected hours. A subscription that appears cheaper can become less attractive if you regularly exceed its included time or if your favorite games are not streamable.

How the extras affect real value
EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics
Ultimate includes EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. Count those benefits only if you would otherwise pay for them or would actively use their included content. They should not be treated as cash savings for someone who does not play those games or want those services.
Online multiplayer and monthly games
PlayStation Essential bundles online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play. If you already need PlayStation multiplayer access, the monthly games and discounts can make Essential worthwhile even without Extra’s catalog. Compare the cost with the games you would actually claim and play; a title that is merely added to your library has little practical value if you never start it.
Classics and trials
Premium’s Classics Catalog and game trials suit players who revisit older PlayStation releases or want to test a game before buying. Trials can reduce the risk of purchasing a game you may not enjoy, but the value depends on whether the titles you are considering have trials and whether you have enough time to use them.
Which tier should you choose?
Choose Xbox Game Pass Ultimate when:
- You use both an Xbox console and a PC and want one subscription across them.
- You plan to play eligible new releases on day one.
- You will use cloud gaming and can work within the announced 15-hour monthly allowance beginning November 2026.
- You will use EA Play, Fortnite Crew or Ubisoft+ Classics rather than valuing them only on paper.
- The current catalog contains several games you expect to play soon.
Choose Xbox Game Pass Premium when:
- You want an Xbox library at $14.99 per month and can wait up to one year for selected new Xbox-published games.
- You do not need Ultimate’s full bundle of day-one access, cloud allowance or partner services.
- The games you want are already in the 200+ game catalog or you are comfortable waiting for them.
Choose PC Game Pass when:
- You play only on PC and want 300+ games, day-one titles and EA Play on PC.
- You would not use Xbox-console access or the broader Ultimate bundle.
Choose PlayStation Plus Extra when:
- You already own a PlayStation console and want a rotating catalog at a lower monthly price than Ultimate.
- You care more about downloadable catalog games than classics, trials or streaming.
- The current Game Catalog contains the games you intend to play.
Choose PlayStation Plus Premium when:
- You specifically want the Classics Catalog, game trials or PlayStation cloud streaming.
- Your internet connection meets Sony’s stated 5 Mbps minimum, with 15 Mbps for 1080p, and the feature is available in your territory.
- You have checked that the games you want are eligible to stream.
Choose PlayStation Plus Essential when:
- You mainly need online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play.
- You do not expect to play enough Extra catalog games to justify the higher price.
A practical value test before you subscribe
- List your hardware. Write down the consoles and computers you will actually use. Exclude a platform you do not own instead of counting its games as theoretical value.
- Name the games. Pick the titles you expect to play first, then check their current inclusion, platform and any catalog end date on the official service pages.
- Mark release timing. If a new game matters, confirm whether the chosen tier includes it on day one, within one year or not at all. Remember that Microsoft’s day-one language excludes Call of Duty titles.
- Choose your streaming pattern. Estimate whether you will stream occasionally or for many hours each month. Apply the announced Xbox 15-, 10- or 5-hour allowance from November 2026, or verify PlayStation Premium’s connection and regional requirements.
- Compare equal billing periods. Use monthly prices against monthly prices, or compare a full year with a full year. PlayStation publishes annual prices; the Xbox figures here are monthly.
- Value only used extras. Count EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, classics, trials, cloud storage or Share Play only when you expect to use them.
- Recheck before payment. Catalogs, prices, cloud rules and regional availability change. A plan that was right for one release may not be right after that game leaves.
Common mistakes that lead to a poor subscription choice
- Comparing service names instead of tiers: Essential, Extra and Premium have different PlayStation benefits, just as Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass do on Xbox.
- Treating game counts as equivalent: 500+ Xbox games and hundreds of PlayStation games do not represent the same catalog or the same genres.
- Assuming every new game is day one: Eligibility varies, and Microsoft’s Ultimate statement explicitly excludes Call of Duty titles.
- Paying for features you cannot use: Premium streaming may not be available in your territory, and Xbox cloud use will have announced monthly allowances from November.
- Ignoring departures: A catalog title can leave, while PlayStation monthly games require an active membership.
- Mixing billing periods: Comparing a PlayStation 12-month price with one month of Game Pass produces a misleading result.
- Buying hardware solely for a subscription: The available evidence supports choosing around hardware you already own; it does not establish that purchasing a new console or accessory will pay for itself.
Bottom line: which is better value?
For a PlayStation owner seeking the lowest-cost route to a substantial rotating catalog, PlayStation Plus Extra is the strongest default. Essential is sufficient when online multiplayer and monthly games are all you need, while Premium earns its price through classics, trials and streaming rather than through a universally better catalog.
For someone who plays across Xbox and PC, wants selected eligible releases on day one, or will use the bundled partner services and cloud access, Game Pass Ultimate offers the broader feature package despite its $22.99 monthly price. Game Pass Premium and PC Game Pass are better-targeted alternatives when you do not need Ultimate’s complete bundle.
The final decision should come from the games you will play, your existing hardware and your expected use of streaming and extras. No independently published statistic establishes one service as universally better value, and no subscription’s advertised game count can replace that personal check.
