Buy a game if you want dependable access to one specific title; use Game Pass if your priority is trying many games while they remain in the catalog. A Game Pass subscription is conditional access, not ownership. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules say that if your subscription ends or a game leaves the catalog, you must reactivate the subscription or buy the game separately to continue using it. A separate purchase is therefore the clearer choice for a favorite you expect to replay, while Game Pass usually has the lower upfront cost for sampling a rotating library.
When a game is marked as leaving, check its current Xbox Store listing, your region, platform compatibility, any member discount and a physical edition before deciding. Xbox announced in September 2025 that eligible members could save up to 20% on games leaving the library, but that was a maximum offer, not a guaranteed discount for every title or market.

Quick verdict: subscription access or a separate entitlement?
| Your situation | Usually better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want to sample many games and rarely replay them | Game Pass | One subscription provides access to a changing catalog without buying every experiment separately. |
| You have one favorite game you will play for months or years | Buy the game | Microsoft identifies a separate purchase as the way to continue after a catalog removal, subject to its digital-goods rules and service requirements. |
| The game is leaving soon and you are midway through it | Compare the current purchase price, discount and remaining play time | A member discount may be shown, but the advertised maximum is “up to 20%,” not a title-specific promise. |
| You are worried the game may disappear from sale | Check digital availability and compatible physical editions | Leaving Game Pass and being removed from a store are separate events. A disc can be an alternative where a compatible release exists. |
| You need a precise financial answer | Calculate for your title, market and plan | There is no reliable universal break-even point without the current price and the period you expect to play. |
What happens when a Game Pass game leaves?
Game Pass access depends on two conditions: your subscription must be active, and the game must still be included in the catalog for your market and plan. It does not turn every catalog item into a permanent purchase entitlement.
If your subscription ends
Microsoft’s digital-goods rules state: "If your subscription terminates or a content item is removed from the catalog, you must reactivate your subscription or buy the content separately to continue using it." In practical terms, canceling or allowing a subscription to lapse removes your right to launch games that you only accessed through the subscription. Buying a game separately creates the purchase path Microsoft describes instead of relying on the subscription.

If the game leaves while your subscription is active
A catalog removal is a different event from your billing status. Even with time left on your subscription, a title can stop being included. The Xbox Game Pass library uses a “Leaving soon” category and tells members to buy a game with a member discount to keep playing. Treat the departure date shown for your own market as the deadline for subscription-based access, not as proof that the game has vanished from every storefront.
If the game is also delisted from sale
“Leaving Game Pass” does not establish that a game has been removed from the Xbox Store, another authorized storefront or physical retail. Conversely, a title can become unavailable to new buyers even though people who purchased it earlier can still download or play it under the applicable rules. Check the exact listing for your account, region and console before assuming either outcome.

1. Decide how much access you actually need
- Short trial: If you only want to finish a brief campaign before the departure date, staying subscribed may be enough.
- Long-term replay: If you expect to return for expansions, achievement hunting or occasional sessions over several years, a separate purchase removes the catalog-removal condition.
- Shared household use: Confirm which account owns the purchase and how your console’s sharing settings work. Do not assume another household profile receives an independent entitlement.
2. Compare the complete cost, not just the sticker price
Write down the game’s current purchase price, any tax shown at checkout, the member price if offered and the number of months of Game Pass you would otherwise pay for. Divide the purchase price by the months you realistically expect to play; this gives you a personal comparison, not a universal break-even rule. Include likely expansions, an upgrade edition or a second purchase on another platform if those matter to you.
3. Check the exact departure and store status
Open the game’s current Xbox listing from the account and console you intend to use. Confirm whether it shows a purchase button, a departure date, the edition included in Game Pass and the platform on which the license works. Catalog information and prices can vary by country, plan and platform, so a screenshot or price seen in another market is not reliable evidence for your checkout.

4. Check whether a physical release changes the decision
If the digital listing is unavailable or you prefer a copy that is not tied solely to catalog inclusion, look for the exact Xbox disc edition and verify that your console has a disc drive. A disc is not proof that every online feature, patch, downloadable expansion or server-dependent mode will remain available. Compatibility must be checked for the specific console generation and edition.
How the buying options differ
Digital purchase
A digital purchase is the direct alternative Microsoft names when a catalog item is removed. It is associated with the purchasing account and remains subject to Microsoft’s digital-goods terms, platform support and any services the game requires. Buying before a departure date can also avoid a rushed decision if the title is still listed and a member price is displayed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not describe a digital purchase as an unconditional guarantee of permanent access. A game may require authentication, updates, downloadable content or online servers that are controlled by the publisher or platform holder. The purchase protects your entitlement relative to Game Pass; it cannot guarantee that every future service will operate indefinitely.
Physical disc
A compatible disc can be useful when a game is no longer sold digitally or when you want a tangible copy. Confirm the region and edition, whether the disc contains the full game or only an installation license, and whether your console accepts that disc format. A disc may still require a large download, patches or an online account. It does not automatically include later downloadable content, season passes or online-only functionality.
Use the official Xbox compatibility information for the game and console combination. Availability of a physical edition is title-specific; do not assume that every Game Pass departure has a disc release or that every disc remains in stock.

How the “up to 20%” leaving-catalog discount works
In a September 16, 2025 Xbox Wire announcement, Xbox said members could purchase games leaving the library with a discount of up to 20% to keep them in their library. The wording establishes a maximum published offer, not a flat discount applied to every departure. Eligibility, the actual percentage, the sale window, the account, the platform and the market can all affect what you see.
Check the price on the game’s current store page while signed in. If the member price is absent, expired or different from the announced maximum, use the displayed amount rather than an old article, social-media post or price from another country. A departure notice is also not evidence that a sale will continue after the game exits the catalog.
Can you still buy a game after it leaves Game Pass?
Often, yes, if the game remains listed for sale in your market and on your platform. A catalog departure only says that the subscription library no longer includes it. It does not by itself prove store delisting. Search the exact title in the Xbox Store and check authorized physical sellers if a disc edition exists.
If the game has been delisted, new digital purchases may no longer be possible. That is why checking the current listing before the departure date matters when the title is important to you. A previous purchase is a different status from future availability: people who already own a license may retain download or play rights under the applicable rules even when a new purchase button is gone.
Does buying protect a game from delisting?
Buying protects your access from the specific Game Pass event—the subscription ending or the game leaving the catalog—because you now have the separate purchase Microsoft identifies. It does not make the game independent of all platform conditions. You may still need the Xbox account that made the purchase, compatible hardware, authentication, patches or functioning online services.

For online multiplayer, live-service features and downloadable content, identify the dependency before paying. A purchase can preserve the base-game entitlement while a publisher’s server closure, an expired license for a soundtrack or a missing expansion changes what remains playable. Those risks apply to many purchased games as well as subscription titles.
A practical checklist for a game marked “Leaving soon”
- Open the notice in your own market. Record the listed departure date and the edition included in your plan.
- Open the current store page. Verify that the game is still sold digitally for your intended console and account.
- Read the signed-in price. Note the standard price, member price, tax and any sale end date. Treat “up to 20%” only as the published maximum, not your guaranteed amount.
- Estimate your play horizon. Decide whether you need a few days, the rest of the year or indefinite replay access.
- Check add-ons and editions. Confirm whether your save, downloadable content or desired upgrade is included in the edition you would buy.
- Investigate a physical alternative. Verify the exact disc release, console compatibility and whether online or downloadable components are required.
- Save your account and installation details. Make sure the purchasing account is the one you will retain and that your console has enough storage for the game and required updates.
- Decide before the deadline. If you buy, complete the transaction while the listing and any displayed discount are still available; if you do not, plan to finish within the remaining subscription window or accept that you may need to purchase later.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming Game Pass means ownership
A subscription grants conditional use. The Microsoft rule about reactivating or buying separately applies both when the subscription terminates and when content is removed from the catalog. Keep that distinction in mind when building a long-term library.
Treating every departure as a store delisting
Catalog removal and removal from sale are separate events. Check the current Xbox listing rather than inferring store status from a “Leaving soon” notice.
Assuming every departing game gets 20% off
The 2025 announcement says “up to 20%.” Verify the exact title, account, market and date. The maximum is not evidence that a particular game receives the full amount or that the promotion remains active.
Buying the wrong platform edition
Xbox versions, console generations, PC licenses and cross-device entitlements can differ. Confirm the platform label and any Play Anywhere or upgrade terms shown on the listing before checkout.

Relying on a disc without checking dependencies
A disc may require installation, updates, an account or servers. It may not include expansions or guarantee online functionality. Verify compatibility and the game’s service requirements first.
Using an old price or departure date
Prices, catalog dates and promotions change. Use the live listing in your region and treat older announcements as historical context only.
Examples of the decision
You want to try a single-player campaign
If you can complete it before the departure date and have no intention of replaying it, remain subscribed and avoid an unnecessary purchase. Keep enough time for installation and updates, not just the nominal campaign length.
Recommended Free Tools
You are halfway through a long role-playing game
Compare the time remaining with the departure date. If finishing is uncertain, buying during a displayed member offer can be safer than rushing. Check whether your saves transfer from the Game Pass installation to the purchased edition and whether the edition includes the content you are using.
You return to a multiplayer game every few months
A purchase may make sense if you expect to play after the catalog exit, but first verify that the servers, required account and multiplayer access remain available. The purchase secures the game license; it does not guarantee the ongoing operation of an online service.
The digital listing has disappeared
Look for a compatible physical release and verify the console, region and required downloads. If no legitimate purchase route remains, do not treat a Game Pass subscription as a way to preserve access after removal; subscription access ends when the catalog entitlement does.
Bottom line for long-term access
Game Pass is best viewed as a flexible access plan for exploration. Buying is the more appropriate tool for a specific game you want to keep using after a subscription lapse or catalog removal. When a title is leaving, make the decision from the live listing in your market: compare the actual purchase price and member offer, check whether the game is still sold, and investigate a compatible physical edition and online dependencies. That process avoids both overpaying for games you will not replay and losing access to a favorite you assumed the subscription had permanently granted.
