Choose PC Game Pass if you play on a Windows PC and want the PC catalog, day-one releases and EA Play at the lower listed US price. Choose Xbox Game Pass Ultimate if you also need Xbox console access, cloud gaming, online console multiplayer or its extra memberships and perks.

The cited US Xbox listings show $13.99 per month for PC Game Pass and $22.99 per month for Ultimate, a $9 monthly difference before tax. Those are current US listings accessed October 13, 2026—not universal prices—so verify your local checkout price, renewal amount and plan terms before subscribing.

Xbox warns that game titles, catalog size, features and availability change over time and can differ by region, plan and platform. Treat the figures in the table as snapshots of Xbox’s listings, not permanent guarantees.

Start with the platform you actually use

Windows PC only: PC Game Pass is the focused option

PC Game Pass is designed for someone whose main screen is a Windows PC. Its value comes from the PC catalog, day-one titles, EA Play and in-game benefits. If you do not own an Xbox console and do not need to stream games, Ultimate’s additional $9 per month buys capabilities you may never use.

“PC only” should include your expected use during the whole billing period, not just the game you are installing today. A player who occasionally visits a friend with an Xbox, wants to play on a television without moving a PC, or plans to use cloud gaming on a tablet is no longer making a PC-only decision.

PC plus Xbox console: Ultimate removes the split

Ultimate is the single subscription intended for people who move between Windows PC and Xbox console. It provides the console catalog alongside PC access, includes day-one games on the covered platforms and adds online console multiplayer. You avoid maintaining a PC-focused subscription and a separate console-oriented arrangement when both systems matter.

Supported phones, tablets, browsers or other devices: check cloud eligibility first

Ultimate’s cloud feature can extend play beyond a local PC or console, but it is not a blanket “play anywhere” promise. Xbox limits cloud gaming to supported devices and selected regions, and the games available for streaming can differ from the broader catalog. A compatible device, reliable connection and any required controller are separate from the subscription itself.

What day-one access really means

Both plans include day-one games on Xbox’s current plan descriptions. Ultimate is not the only way to receive new releases on their launch day, and upgrading solely for that reason does not add a benefit to a PC player who already qualifies through PC Game Pass.

Day-one inclusion does not mean every game is available on every platform. A title may launch for console, PC or both, and the catalog can differ by region and platform. Before subscribing for one specific release, check that game’s listing for your platform and country. Xbox’s availability notice explicitly says titles, numbers, features and availability vary over time, by region, plan and platform.

Cloud gaming is the decisive feature difference

PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming

Xbox’s PC Game Pass description excludes cloud gaming. You install and run the PC games locally, so your computer must meet the game’s requirements and have enough storage for the installation. A PC player who expects to stream a console game to a browser or mobile device will need a plan that includes cloud access instead.

Ultimate includes cloud play with conditions

Ultimate includes cloud gaming, but Xbox describes it as subject to plan limits, supported devices and regional availability. The streamable library is not necessarily identical to the installable PC or console library. Check the cloud-play indicator for the game you want and confirm that your device and country are supported before treating streaming as a substitute for a local installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud gaming can be useful when you have a modest computer, want to try a game without a large download, or switch between devices. It does not remove every practical requirement: you still need a supported client, an internet connection that can sustain interactive video and, for many setups, a controller. Xbox does not establish a universal bandwidth or latency figure in the cited plan pages, so do not rely on a specific minimum number without checking the current cloud-support documentation for your region.

EA Play and the extra memberships

EA Play is in both plans

EA Play is listed with PC Game Pass and Ultimate. If EA’s included games and member benefits are the reason you are subscribing, the cheaper PC plan already covers a Windows PC player. Ultimate does not provide a second EA Play membership; its advantage is the wider set of platforms and other bundled benefits.

Ultimate’s named extras can change the calculation

Xbox lists Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, in-game benefits and rewards with Ultimate. These extras have value only if you would otherwise use them. Someone who regularly plays the included Fortnite content or wants the Ubisoft+ Classics selection may recover part of the $9 difference through avoided standalone spending. Someone who never touches those services should assign them zero personal value rather than treating every listed perk as savings.

Console multiplayer matters only when you play on console

Ultimate includes online console multiplayer. That is relevant when you use an Xbox console for multiplayer games that require the platform’s online service. PC Game Pass is a PC-oriented plan and does not present console multiplayer as one of its included features. A Windows player who never signs into an Xbox console gains nothing from paying for this capability.

If you are buying a console soon, include that future use in the decision. Subscribing to PC Game Pass now and upgrading later can make sense if the console purchase is uncertain; choosing Ultimate from the start can be simpler when console multiplayer is an immediate requirement.

Price, billing and the real monthly cost

How much more is Ultimate?

Using the cited US listings, PC Game Pass is $13.99 per month and Ultimate is $22.99 per month. Subtracting the listed prices gives a $9 monthly difference, or $108 over twelve months if both rates stayed unchanged and you paid every month. The $108 figure is arithmetic, not a separate Xbox statistic, and it excludes taxes, promotions and any price changes.

Calculation Result using the cited US listings
Ultimate minus PC Game Pass $22.99 − $13.99 = $9 per month
Difference over 12 months at unchanged rates $9 × 12 = $108 before tax
PC Game Pass listed annualized rate $13.99 × 12 = $167.88 before tax
Ultimate listed annualized rate $22.99 × 12 = $275.88 before tax

The listings are for the United States. Your country may have a different currency, tax treatment, catalog, promotion or plan name. Xbox says subscriptions continue automatically unless canceled, promotional offers can convert to the then-current regular price, and the amount can change. The checkout screen and Microsoft account subscription settings are the authoritative places to confirm your renewal terms.

How to avoid an unexpected renewal

  1. Open the official Xbox or Microsoft account subscription page for your region and select the plan.
  2. Review the displayed price, tax, billing frequency, promotional period and the regular price that follows any offer.
  3. After subscribing, open your Microsoft account subscription settings and verify the next billing date and recurring amount.
  4. If you do not want automatic renewal, cancel recurring billing from those settings before the next charge; check the account page for the exact cancellation and access terms shown for your purchase.

Which plan fits common player profiles?

Choose PC Game Pass when all of these are true

  • Windows PC is the only platform you expect to use.
  • You want the PC catalog and day-one PC releases.
  • EA Play is useful to you.
  • You do not need cloud gaming or online Xbox console multiplayer.
  • The additional Ultimate perks are not worth $9 per month to you.

This is the straightforward value choice for a PC-first player. The lower listed US price leaves money for games or hardware while retaining the core PC benefits.

Choose Ultimate when any of these is true

  • You play on both Windows PC and Xbox console.
  • You need online multiplayer on an Xbox console.
  • You want to stream supported games to a supported device.
  • You would use Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics or the included rewards and benefits.
  • You want one subscription that covers changing play locations rather than managing separate access.

One of these needs can justify Ultimate; you do not have to use every extra. The question is whether the feature you need would otherwise require a separate subscription, purchase or compromise.

Choose neither immediately if your target game or device is uncertain

Pause before paying when your decision depends on one title, one country or one unusual device. Search the current Xbox listing for that title, confirm the platform version and look for the cloud-play indicator if streaming is your goal. If the game is absent, unavailable in your region or unsupported on your device, neither tier solves that particular problem.

How to compare the catalog without being misled by counts

Xbox’s overview advertises 300+ PC games for PC Game Pass, while its US comparison listing advertises 500+ games for Ultimate across console, PC and supported devices. These are useful indicators of scale, not a promise that every one of those games works on your preferred platform. Catalog membership can change as licensing agreements and platform versions change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the platform on which you will actually play the title.
  2. Check the game’s current page for inclusion in your specific plan and region.
  3. Distinguish an installable PC or console version from a cloud-playable version.
  4. Check whether the title is a day-one release, a later catalog addition or a time-limited benefit.
  5. Recheck before a long-term renewal if your subscription is justified by a single game.

This approach is more reliable than choosing the tier with the larger headline number. A smaller catalog that contains the games you play is worth more than hundreds of unavailable titles.

Setup considerations for PC and cloud players

Local PC play

PC Game Pass and the PC portion of Ultimate require a Windows PC capable of running the games you select. The cited plan pages do not specify universal processor, graphics, memory or storage requirements because those requirements belong to individual games. Read each game’s system requirements before subscribing for a demanding title, and leave sufficient storage for updates.

Controller-based play

A controller is optional for many PC games but may be preferable for console-style games or cloud gaming. The plan pages support the broader supported-device context but do not verify compatibility for a particular controller model. Confirm that the controller works with your operating system, browser or cloud client before buying one; it is not required to purchase either subscription.

Cloud troubleshooting

  • No cloud option appears: verify that you are signed into the account with Ultimate, that the title supports streaming and that cloud gaming is available in your region.
  • The device is unsupported: use a device and browser or app listed by Xbox for your location; a subscription cannot override a platform restriction.
  • Streaming quality is poor: test the connection, reduce competing network traffic and try a supported wired or stronger wireless setup. The cited pages do not promise a particular performance level.
  • A game is playable locally but not in the cloud: treat those as separate availability lists and install it on the supported platform when local requirements are met.

Common mistakes when selecting a tier

Assuming Ultimate is the only day-one plan

Xbox lists day-one games with PC Game Pass as well as Ultimate. If you play exclusively on PC, paying for Ultimate solely to obtain launch-day access is unnecessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting every perk as cash savings

Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics and rewards have no practical value if you will not use them. Calculate the value from your own play habits, not from the number of logos on the plan page.

Expecting PC Game Pass to stream games

Cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass. Select Ultimate only when the supported cloud feature addresses a real use case for you.

Ignoring regional and platform differences

Prices, catalogs, features and cloud availability can differ by country and device. A US comparison cannot establish what your local checkout will show.

Forgetting promotional renewal terms

A discounted introductory price can convert to the then-current regular rate, and subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. Record the renewal date and amount when you subscribe.

Decision checklist

  1. Write down every device you will use during the next month: Windows PC, Xbox console and any supported cloud device.
  2. Mark whether you need console multiplayer, cloud gaming or either of Ultimate’s named extras.
  3. Confirm that your must-play games are included on your intended platform and in your region.
  4. Compare your local checkout prices, taxes, promotion length and recurring amount.
  5. Choose PC Game Pass if PC access covers your list; choose Ultimate when at least one required feature is exclusive to it.
  6. Set a reminder to reassess when your promotion ends or your device mix changes.

Verdict: which subscription do you need?

For a Windows-PC-only player, PC Game Pass is the sensible default: it includes the PC catalog, day-one games and EA Play at the lower listed US price of $13.99 per month. Upgrade to Ultimate at the listed $22.99 per month when you will use Xbox console access, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming or the additional bundled benefits. Neither plan is a universal winner; the right choice follows the platforms and features you will actually use, checked against your local Xbox checkout because prices and availability change.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
