For US subscribers, the right Xbox Game Pass tier depends on three things: where you play, how quickly you want new releases, and whether you will use the bundled services. Essential is the low-cost console option, Premium suits players who want a larger multi-device library without requiring day-one first-party access, Ultimate is for day-one releases and the broadest bundle, and PC Game Pass targets PC-only players who want day-one games and EA Play. The prices below are the monthly rates displayed on US Xbox and Microsoft Store pages accessed October 13, 2026; verify the live storefront before subscribing because prices, promotions and availability can change.
Quick answer: which plan should you choose?
- Choose Essential if you mainly play on Xbox consoles, need online multiplayer for paid games and want the lowest-cost library subscription.
- Choose Premium if you use console and PC, want a substantially larger catalog and can wait for select Xbox-published games to arrive within one year rather than on launch day.
- Choose Ultimate if day-one releases, cloud play and included memberships such as EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics will all get regular use.
- Choose PC Game Pass if you play on Windows PC and want day-one titles plus EA Play, but do not need Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Free-to-play multiplayer games on Xbox do not require a paid Game Pass plan, so do not buy Essential solely to play those titles online.

Xbox Game Pass plans and US prices
This table uses the displayed US monthly rates and advertised catalog sizes on the official comparison and Store pages. Prices are recurring subscription rates unless canceled; taxes, promotions and local terms can alter the amount you see at checkout.
| Plan | Displayed US monthly rate | Advertised catalog | Best fit | Key features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $9.99 | 50+ games | Budget-focused console players | Online console multiplayer, in-game benefits, Rewards and five cloud-play hours per month; no day-one new releases |
| Premium | $14.99 | 200+ games | Multi-device players who can wait for releases | Select new Xbox-published games arrive within one year, 10 cloud-play hours per month, in-game benefits and Rewards |
| Ultimate | $22.99 | 500+ games | Players seeking the broadest bundle | New games on day one, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, 15 cloud-play hours per month and the highest-quality or priority streaming described on the Store listing |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 | 300+ PC games | PC-first players | Day-one PC titles, EA Play and in-game benefits; Xbox Cloud Gaming is not included |
“50+,” “200+,” “500+” and “300+” are headline counts, not guarantees that every listed game works in every country, on every device or throughout your subscription. Xbox says game titles, counts, features and availability vary over time, by region, plan and platform.

What Essential actually includes
Who benefits most
Essential is the entry point for a console player who wants a smaller rotating library at $9.99 per month. Its main practical advantage is online multiplayer for paid console games, combined with access to more than 50 advertised games and plan-specific in-game benefits.
What it does not provide
Essential does not include new releases on day one. The Store listing shows a limit of five cloud-play hours per month, so it is better suited to occasional streaming than to replacing local console play. Check each game’s platform listing before assuming a catalog title is playable on console, PC or the cloud.
When the cheaper plan is enough
Compare the catalog with your personal “must-play” list. If most of your time goes to games you already own, free-to-play multiplayer or a few titles in the Essential library, paying for a higher tier can add cost without adding useful playtime.
Why Premium is the middle-ground option
Larger library across devices
Premium raises the advertised catalog to more than 200 games and is presented for console, PC and supported devices. That makes it a better fit for households or individuals who move between Xbox and PC and want more variety than Essential provides.

“Within one year” is not day one
Select new Xbox-published games are promised within one year of release, not at launch. If you are comfortable waiting months, Premium can avoid Ultimate’s higher monthly price while still bringing some newer first-party games into the catalog. The timing is not a guarantee that every Xbox-published title will qualify.
Cloud allowance
Premium’s listed cloud-play allowance is 10 hours per month. That is a plan-page limit, not an independent performance measurement. Supported regions, devices and cloud-enabled games still apply.
What makes Ultimate different
Day-one access and the largest advertised catalog
Ultimate is the only tier in this comparison that combines a 500-plus advertised catalog with new games on day one. It is the logical choice for players who would otherwise buy several launch-day releases each year and can use enough of the included catalog to offset the $22.99 monthly rate.
Recommended Free Tools
Bundled memberships
The plan includes EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics, in addition to in-game benefits and Rewards. Treat those as potential value, not automatic savings: calculate what you would otherwise pay for services you actually use, rather than assigning full value to memberships that would sit unused.

Cloud streaming
Ultimate lists 15 cloud-play hours per month and the highest-quality or priority streaming description on the Store listing. Streaming still depends on your region, supported device, network and the game’s cloud availability. A higher allowance does not remove those conditions.
When PC Game Pass is the better buy
Designed for Windows PC play
PC Game Pass costs $13.99 per month and advertises more than 300 PC games, day-one titles, EA Play and in-game benefits. For someone who never plays on an Xbox console or supported cloud device, it concentrates the subscription around the platform actually being used.
No Xbox Cloud Gaming
PC Game Pass does not include Xbox Cloud Gaming. If streaming to a phone, browser, television or another supported device is part of your plan, compare Ultimate instead and confirm that the target device and region are supported.
Check PC requirements individually
A PC catalog subscription does not mean every game runs on every computer. Review the game’s Windows requirements, storage needs, account requirements and controller or keyboard support before installing a large title.

The differences that should drive your decision
1. Release timing
Ultimate and PC Game Pass include day-one titles. Premium brings select Xbox-published games within one year. Essential has no day-one new-release access. This distinction matters more than the raw game count if you buy or play games immediately at launch.
2. Where you play
Essential, Premium and Ultimate are presented across console, PC and supported devices, but the exact catalog differs by platform. PC Game Pass is focused on PC. Do not infer cross-platform rights from a game appearing in a general catalog.
3. Catalog size
The advertised counts are 50-plus for Essential, 200-plus for Premium, 500-plus for Ultimate and 300-plus PC games for PC Game Pass. They are useful indicators of breadth, not a permanent inventory or a promise of local availability.

Essential, Premium and Ultimate list five, 10 and 15 cloud-play hours per month respectively. PC Game Pass excludes cloud gaming. Check the current plan page for any changed allowance and verify that your region, device and desired games are supported.

| Your habit | Best starting point | Reason | Check before subscribing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mostly Xbox console, budget first | Essential | Lowest displayed price with paid-game online multiplayer and a starter catalog | Whether your regular games are among the 50-plus titles; free-to-play games need no paid plan |
| Console and PC, broad library, little launch-day urgency | Premium | 200-plus games and select Xbox-published releases within one year | Whether waiting for those releases is acceptable and whether your key games are on both platforms |
| You want every major launch immediately | Ultimate or PC Game Pass | Both include day-one titles; Ultimate adds console, cloud and bundled services | Choose PC Game Pass only if you do not need cloud or console access |
| Cloud-first play | Ultimate, usually | Highest listed cloud allowance at 15 hours per month | Region, device, network quality and the specific cloud catalog |
| PC only, with EA Play | PC Game Pass | 300-plus PC games, day-one titles and EA Play at $13.99 displayed monthly | PC hardware requirements and the absence of cloud gaming |
How to choose without overpaying
- List your must-play games. Search the current Xbox catalog for each title and note its platform, edition and removal or availability notice.
- Mark your launch-day requirement. If you need new releases immediately, eliminate Essential and choose between Ultimate and PC Game Pass based on your devices.
- Count your actual devices. A multi-device plan has value only when you use those devices; a PC-only player may gain nothing from console or cloud features.
- Estimate cloud hours. Compare your expected streaming time with the listed five, 10 or 15 monthly hours and verify that your region supports cloud play.
- Value bundled services realistically. Include EA Play, Fortnite Crew or Ubisoft+ Classics only when you would otherwise use them.
- Check the checkout total. Confirm US currency, current promotion, recurring-billing terms and cancellation details immediately before purchase.
Catalog, region and platform caveats
Microsoft’s availability notice is unusually important for this subscription: game titles, counts, features and availability can change over time and differ by region, plan and platform. A game shown on a US page may not be licensed in your country, may be unavailable on your device or may leave the service later. Search the local Xbox storefront for a specific game before treating it as a reason to subscribe.
The prices in this article are not a worldwide price list. Local currency, tax, promotions and supported plan details vary. Readers outside the US should use their local Xbox storefront rather than converting the figures above.

Billing, cancellation and gifting considerations
Subscriptions are described with recurring billing unless canceled. Review the renewal date and cancellation controls in your Microsoft account, and save confirmation after changing the setting. A promotion can have different renewal terms from the displayed introductory price, so read the checkout language rather than assuming the first charge repeats indefinitely.
Microsoft also references Xbox Gift Cards and eligible Microsoft Store purchases as possible payment or gifting routes. Redemption rules and eligibility vary, so confirm the recipient’s account region and the current terms before buying a card.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the biggest number wins: a 500-plus catalog is not useful if your preferred games are absent or unavailable on your device.
- Confusing Premium with day-one access: its within-one-year window is intentionally different from launch-day availability.
- Buying PC Game Pass for cloud play: cloud gaming is not included in that plan.
- Counting free-to-play multiplayer as a paid-plan benefit: Xbox allows multiplayer access for free-to-play games without a subscription.
- Ignoring cloud limits: the five-, 10- and 15-hour figures are monthly plan allowances, not unlimited streaming.
- Using US prices globally: storefront pricing and plan availability are market-specific.
Bottom-line recommendation by player type
Essential is the sensible starting point for a price-sensitive console player. Premium is the compromise for a larger cross-device library when waiting up to a year for select first-party games is acceptable. Ultimate earns its premium when you will use day-one releases, cloud play and at least one of its bundled memberships. PC Game Pass is the focused choice for a Windows PC player who wants day-one games and EA Play and has no need for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Whichever tier you choose, verify your must-play games and the live local price at checkout first.
