Xbox Game Pass can work on a handheld in four different ways: install supported PC games on a Windows handheld, stream supported games from Xbox Cloud Gaming, stream games from your own Xbox console with Remote Play, or use eligible Xbox Play Anywhere games across supported devices. The best option depends on your handheld, the game, your region, your internet connection and whether you need to play offline.
Choose how you want to play

These are distinct routes, not a promise that every Game Pass title is available on every handheld. Xbox’s cloud gaming information and handheld guidance describe different device and game requirements.

Which handhelds work?
Windows handheld PCs
Xbox presents the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X as handheld gaming devices with access to Game Pass. Xbox’s handheld guidance covers the Xbox mode experience, downloading and playing games, cloud streaming, Remote Play and Xbox Play Anywhere. For a particular title, check the PC version’s hardware requirements and compatibility; performance and storage needs vary by game.
Cloud-focused handhelds
Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 guide lists the ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, Logitech G Cloud and Razer Edge among handhelds for cloud gaming. Device support can change, so confirm the current list and availability for your region on Xbox’s cloud gaming page.

Steam Deck
Xbox Wire described Steam Deck cloud support as in beta in its December 19, 2025 guide. The outlined setup uses Desktop Mode to install Microsoft Edge, then opens Xbox.com/play. This is a browser-based setup, not native Xbox app support; check current instructions and beta status before relying on it.
Other devices
Xbox’s cloud FAQ lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, selected LG, Samsung and VIDAA TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and select Meta Quest headsets. The live supported-device and region information is the place to verify a specific model or country.

What you need for each play method
Cloud gaming
- An active Essential, Premium or Ultimate subscription and a supported game in a supported region. Selected free-to-play cloud games can instead be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
- A supported device and an internet connection. Xbox’s cloud FAQ gives 10 Mbps downstream as a minimum and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality; it recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 guide recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable connection and suggests wired Ethernet where available, 5 GHz Wi-Fi or capable 5G. These are guidance figures, not a guarantee of performance.
- A compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB, unless the game supports touch controls. Xbox says selected games offer touch controls.
- A supported browser, such as Edge, Chrome or Safari, when playing through a browser.

You need a compatible Windows handheld, an Xbox account and access to the PC version of the game. Check the title’s individual hardware and storage requirements: Xbox cautions that PC requirements vary and that performance can depend on frame rate and other game specifications. A local install may be the better route to investigate when you expect to play without continuous cloud streaming, but do not assume every title works offline. Check its license and launcher behavior.

Remote Play
Remote Play streams from your own Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Xbox requires a supported device and game, remote features enabled on the console, and the console to be on or in Sleep mode. Internet or mobile-data charges may apply. Online console multiplayer through Remote Play requires a Game Pass subscription sold separately. The current cloud page’s monthly limits differ from the “unlimited cloud gaming” description in Xbox Wire’s 2025 guide. Use the live plan terms rather than assuming the older description still applies. For total cost, add the handheld’s current price, subscription, applicable tax, internet or mobile data, and any controller or other accessories you need.

How to choose the right route
- Choose local installs when the handheld runs the PC version and you want less dependence on streaming. Budget for storage and verify the title’s requirements and offline behavior.
- Choose cloud gaming when the device and game are supported and your connection is dependable. It avoids installing the game locally, but needs a supported region and a connection while you play.
- Choose Remote Play when you want to stream games from a console you own and can leave configured and available.
- Check compatibility title by title. Xbox describes a handheld compatibility program for the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X; Steam Deck cloud support was described as beta by Xbox Wire on December 19, 2025. Neither establishes universal compatibility across games and devices.
- Compare the full setup cost. Verify the subscription tier and renewal price for your country, then include hardware, data or broadband and any needed peripherals.
