Short answer: Xbox currently separates Game Pass into three console-access tiers—Essential, Premium, and Ultimate—and a PC-only subscription called PC Game Pass. Essential and Premium are console-focused tiers with different libraries and cloud allowances. PC Game Pass is for Windows PCs, includes day-one PC releases and EA Play, and does not include cloud gaming. Ultimate is the broadest option for people who want both Xbox console and Windows PC access, day-one releases, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming, and several bundled memberships. Catalogs, features, prices, and availability vary by country, platform, and time, so verify the live local listing before subscribing.
What each Game Pass plan includes
The current U.S. Game Pass overview lists four plans. Three provide console access, while PC Game Pass is specifically for Windows PCs. The figures below are Xbox’s displayed claims on the U.S. page retrieved in October 2026, not permanent guarantees or independent counts. Xbox says game quantities, titles, features, and availability can change by region, plan, platform, and time. Check the official plan page for your market before buying.

| Plan | Xbox’s displayed library claim | Release timing | Cloud play allowance shown | Notable inclusions | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games | Does not include new releases on day one | 5 hours per month | Online console multiplayer, in-game benefits, rewards | Console players who want a lower-tier library and multiplayer |
| Premium | 200+ games | Select Xbox-published games within one year of launch; the page footnote excludes Call of Duty titles | 10 hours per month | Online console multiplayer, in-game benefits, rewards | Console players who can wait for many first-party releases |
| Ultimate | 500+ games | New games on day one | 15 hours per month | EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer, rewards | People who want the widest console-and-PC bundle and cloud access |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games | Day-one PC games | Cloud gaming is not included | EA Play, in-game benefits, rewards | Windows PC players who do not need console access |
The library totals and cloud-hour figures are snapshots of Xbox’s U.S. overview. They do not mean every listed game runs on every device, nor that a particular title is available in every country. Individual game pages and the live library determine platform and regional availability.

Essential
Essential is the entry-level console tier in the current U.S. overview. Xbox advertises more than 50 games, online console multiplayer, in-game benefits, rewards, and five hours of cloud playtime per month on that page. It specifically does not include new releases on day one. That makes it unsuitable if immediate access to newly launched Xbox titles is your main reason for subscribing.

- 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.
Essential is also not a substitute for PC Game Pass. Its advertised access is centered on Xbox console use, and its smaller library and lower cloud allowance reflect that position in the lineup. Confirm the exact console catalog in your region because Xbox can change titles and quantities.
Premium
Premium expands the advertised library to more than 200 games and raises the displayed cloud allowance to 10 hours per month. It includes online console multiplayer, in-game benefits, and rewards. Xbox says select Xbox-published games arrive within one year of launch, rather than on their release date; a footnote on the U.S. page excludes Call of Duty titles from that timing promise.
Premium therefore suits a console player who values a larger rotating library but is comfortable waiting. “Within one year” is a maximum timing statement for eligible titles, not a guarantee that every Xbox-published game will appear or that all games will be available in every market.
Ultimate
Ultimate is the broadest bundle shown on the U.S. page: more than 500 games, new games on day one, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer, rewards, and 15 hours of cloud playtime each month. Xbox lists Ultimate across supported Xbox console and PC device categories, making it the plan intended for households or individuals who regularly use both platforms.
The bundle still has platform boundaries. A game in the Ultimate library may be console-only, PC-only, or available through cloud play, and Xbox says availability depends on the specific platform and plan. Check each game’s listing rather than assuming that every title can be installed on both devices.

What PC Game Pass includes—and what it does not
PC Game Pass is a separate Windows PC subscription. Xbox’s PC page advertises more than 300 PC games, day-one PC releases, EA Play, in-game benefits, and rewards. The plan is played on a Windows PC through the Xbox PC app; Xbox’s FAQ states, “You can play on a Windows PC.”
PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming. If you want to stream games instead of installing them, you need a plan that advertises cloud play—currently the console tiers and, most broadly, Ultimate—and a supported device in a supported market. PC Game Pass also does not turn into a console subscription: subscribing to the PC plan alone does not grant access to the console catalog or online console multiplayer.

Console versus PC: the practical differences
| Question | Xbox console | Windows PC |
|---|---|---|
| Which plans apply? | Essential, Premium, and Ultimate are the console-access choices. | PC Game Pass is PC-only; Ultimate also lists PC access. |
| Day-one releases | Essential excludes them; Premium offers select Xbox-published games within one year; Ultimate includes new games on day one. | PC Game Pass and Ultimate advertise day-one PC games. |
| Online console multiplayer | Included with Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Free-to-play games have multiplayer access open to every Xbox player, according to Xbox’s comparison information. | PC Game Pass is not a console-multiplayer plan. PC multiplayer rules depend on the individual game and its services. |
| Cloud gaming | Plan-specific monthly limits are shown for Essential, Premium, and Ultimate, subject to supported device and market availability. | PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming. Ultimate can provide cloud access where supported. |
| Installation | Install compatible console games from the console library, or use cloud play where available. | Use the Xbox PC app and meet the game’s hardware and Windows requirements. |
| Library scope | Console catalog varies by tier and region. | PC catalog is a Windows library; a console title is not automatically a PC title. |
Ultimate is the only plan in this lineup designed as a single subscription for both console and PC use. That does not eliminate the need to check the platform icon on every game: cross-device access is title-specific.
How Game Pass access works
Access lasts only while the subscription and title are active
Game Pass is a changing subscription library, not ownership of the included games. Xbox states that subscribers retain access until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the Game Pass library. If a title leaves, you must purchase it or use another entitlement to continue playing it. If your subscription ends, the subscription-based access ends even if the game remains in the catalog.

Catalogs rotate
Because titles enter and leave, a static list can become inaccurate quickly. Use the live Game Pass library and the individual console or PC game page to verify that a particular title is currently included, on which platform, and under which plan. Xbox’s comparison information also warns that titles, features, quantities, and availability vary by time, region, plan, and platform.
Cloud play is limited and conditional
The U.S. overview displayed five hours per month for Essential, 10 for Premium, and 15 for Ultimate at retrieval. These are plan-level allowances shown by Xbox and can change. Cloud gaming additionally requires a supported device and a supported market; an eligible subscription alone does not guarantee that streaming is available where you live.
How to start playing on an Xbox console
- Choose a console-access plan. Compare Essential, Premium, and Ultimate on the U.S. overview or your local Xbox page. Base the choice on day-one timing, catalog size, cloud hours, and whether bundled memberships matter.
- Confirm the current local price and catalog. Prices are dynamic and regional. The U.S. page captured for this guide displayed masked price fields rather than a usable dollar amount, so no reliable current U.S. price is quoted here.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used on the console. Redeem a subscription or code on that account; switching accounts later can make the entitlement appear to be missing.
- Open the Game Pass area on the console. Browse the included library, filter for console-compatible games, and open a title’s page to see plan and platform requirements.
- Install or stream where offered. Install a compatible game to the console, or select cloud play when the title, plan, device, and region support it. Cloud use counts against the plan’s displayed monthly allowance.
- Check multiplayer eligibility. Essential, Premium, and Ultimate include online console multiplayer. Free-to-play games are an exception: Xbox says online multiplayer for those games is open to every Xbox player.
How to start playing on a Windows PC
- Check Windows first. The PC app requirement listed by Xbox is Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher. Apply available Windows updates before troubleshooting the app.
- Install or open the Xbox PC app. Sign in with the Microsoft account that holds PC Game Pass or Ultimate.
- Filter for PC games. A shared Ultimate subscription can show console, PC, and cloud entries. Select the PC version or the PC platform filter rather than assuming a console listing includes a Windows build.
- Read the game’s requirements. Compare the title page’s minimum operating-system and hardware requirements with your computer. The subscription does not waive storage, graphics, memory, or update requirements.
- Install the game. Download it through the app, then launch it from the app or your Windows library. PC Game Pass does not provide cloud play, so PC Game Pass-only use requires a local installation for PC titles.
- Recheck access if a title disappears. Confirm that the subscription is active and that the game has not left the catalog or changed platform availability.
Can you use PC Game Pass on an Xbox?
No. PC Game Pass is a Windows-PC subscription, not a console plan. It does not grant access to the Xbox console library or console multiplayer. For one subscription that covers both an Xbox console and a Windows PC, choose a plan that explicitly lists both platforms—currently Ultimate on the U.S. overview—and verify each game’s platform entry.
Does Ultimate include both PC and console?
Yes, Xbox lists Ultimate across Xbox console and PC device categories, along with day-one games, cloud gaming, online console multiplayer, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, and rewards. The entitlement is still subject to title-by-title platform support, regional catalog differences, and the cloud service’s supported-device and market limits.
Billing, recurring charges, and cancellation
Recurring billing
Xbox says recurring billing is enabled by default. A promotional or introductory price does not automatically end the subscription: recurring billing continues after the offer unless you turn it off. Review the renewal date and future amount in your Microsoft account when you subscribe or redeem a code.

Turning off renewal
Xbox says you can disable recurring billing through your Microsoft account or your console. Turning off renewal prevents the next automatic charge; it does not necessarily remove access immediately if paid time remains. Keep the confirmation screen or email so you can verify that renewal is disabled.
Refund qualification
The U.S. overview says a refund for the most recent recurring-billing charge may be requested within 30 days after payment, limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product. Treat that as a statement of the page’s current U.S. terms, not a universal promise: eligibility, timing, region, and purchase method can affect the result. Use the current Xbox account and support terms linked from the plan page before relying on a refund.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which plan should you choose?
Choose Essential when console basics are enough
- You mainly play on an Xbox console.
- You need online console multiplayer for paid games.
- A 50-plus-game advertised library is sufficient.
- Day-one releases and a larger cloud allowance are not priorities.
Choose Premium when waiting is acceptable
- You want the larger 200-plus-game advertised console library.
- You can wait for eligible Xbox-published games to arrive within one year.
- You want 10 displayed cloud hours per month rather than Essential’s five.
- You do not need the day-one release promise or the extra memberships listed with Ultimate.
Choose Ultimate for mixed-device and day-one use
- You play on both Xbox console and Windows PC.
- You want new games on day one rather than waiting.
- You will use EA Play, Fortnite Crew, or Ubisoft+ Classics enough to value their inclusion.
- You want the largest displayed library and the highest displayed cloud allowance among these plans.
Choose PC Game Pass for a Windows-only setup
- You play exclusively on a compatible Windows PC.
- Day-one PC releases and EA Play matter.
- You do not need console access or cloud gaming.
- Your computer meets each game’s published requirements.
Cost and availability checks before subscribing
Do not compare plans using an old screenshot or a price from another country. Xbox’s U.S. overview used dynamic price fields at retrieval, and introductory promotions can have different renewal terms. Check the local price, tax treatment, renewal amount, and cancellation conditions in your Microsoft account.
Then check the live catalog for the games you actually intend to play. A plan’s “50+,” “200+,” “300+,” or “500+” figure is a vendor-published total, not a guarantee that your preferred title is included. Confirm the title’s platform, region, plan eligibility, and whether it is installable or cloud-playable on your device.

A game appears on console but not PC
Look for a Windows PC version on the game’s page. Ultimate’s cross-device scope does not convert a console-only game into a PC game. If no PC version is listed, the title cannot be installed through the PC library.

Cloud play is unavailable
Check three conditions: your plan includes cloud play, your device is supported, and cloud gaming is offered in your market. PC Game Pass by itself does not include cloud gaming. Also check whether you have used the plan’s displayed monthly cloud allowance.
The subscription is active but a game is locked
Verify that you are signed into the account that owns the subscription, that the title has not left the library, and that the title is included in your tier. Catalog membership can differ between console, PC, and cloud versions.
Renewal charged unexpectedly
Open your Microsoft account’s subscription settings and review recurring billing, renewal date, and purchase history. If the charge is the most recent recurring-billing payment, consult the current Xbox refund terms promptly; the U.S. overview describes a possible request within 30 days with a one-time-per-product limitation.

The practical bottom line
For an Xbox-only player, the decision is mainly about library size, release timing, multiplayer, and cloud hours: Essential is the basic tier, Premium trades day-one access for a larger library and later first-party availability, and Ultimate adds day-one releases and the broadest bundle. For a Windows-only player, PC Game Pass is the focused choice, with day-one PC games and EA Play but no cloud gaming. If you use both console and PC, Ultimate is the plan explicitly built for that combination. In every case, confirm your local price and the live title list because Xbox changes catalogs, features, and regional availability.
