The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was scheduled to leave Xbox Game Pass on August 31, 2026. That date has now passed. If you were halfway through Velen, or had been saving the game for a quiet month, the practical question is what to do next. My answer: buy it only if you will actually finish it, and otherwise spend your subscription on something else. A 2015 game’s exit doesn’t make the service worse.
What was reported
ComicBook.com’s Logan Moore reported on August 18, 2026 that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would leave Game Pass on August 31, 2026. The piece described it as one of the best games of all time. It’s secondary reporting, not an official Xbox catalog record, so the removal date is the reported schedule rather than something I’ve independently confirmed.

The same report made these points:
- The game originally released in 2015.
- CD Projekt Red was still supporting it. The report mentioned an expansion called Songs of the Past, planned for 2027. That title and timing come from the August report, so treat them as announced plans that could change.
- As of publication, neither Xbox nor CD Projekt Red had confirmed that the game would return to Game Pass.
Game Pass titles can leave and sometimes come back, but nothing in the report suggests a return is planned. Don’t wait for one.
Check your own status first
Catalogs differ by tier, region and platform, and they change often. Before spending anything, open the Game Pass app on your console or PC, or the Xbox app, and search for the title. If it’s gone, check whether your saves are still on your console or in Xbox cloud storage. Saves from a Game Pass copy should work again if you later own the same game on the same platform, but confirm that the listing you buy is the same platform version before assuming so.
#1 Best Overall
- If you buy this game, you will receive a free next-gen update on December 14th!
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
Should you buy it?
I couldn’t verify a current price, active discount or edition lineup, so I won’t quote one. The report said the game had been discounted routinely in the past, but that no promotion was running when it was published. Check the Microsoft Store listing for today’s price and for what each edition includes. Then use this framework.
| Your situation | Reasonable move |
|---|---|
| Mid-playthrough with a save you care about | Buy a copy and continue. The game is long enough that the hours already invested favor finishing it. |
| Never played it and want to | Buy it, ideally during a sale. You can wait, since this is a 2015 game and its discount history suggests sales recur, but that is a pattern rather than a promise. |
| Wanted a casual look | Skip it. A game this large is a poor fit for a “try an hour” mindset, and it’s not worth paying full price for a quick look. |
| Planning to play the 2027 expansion | Buy once the expansion’s details are firm. Announced plans can shift, so don’t pay early on that basis alone. |
The case that Game Pass can live without it
The headline’s claim is an argument, not a measured fact. Nobody has published evidence about how much this one game contributed to subscriptions. Still, there’s a sound reasoning behind it.
- It’s a game most people already own or can get cheaply. Over a decade, a title that sells that widely, and that has been discounted often, tends to be in many libraries already. Its presence on a subscription adds less than a new release would.
- A subscription’s value is in rotation. Game Pass is strongest as a way to sample many things. A single 100-hour RPG can hold your attention for months, which works against that purpose.
- Losing it changes little for most subscribers. If you hadn’t installed it by August, nothing you pay for has changed.
The counterpoint is fair: for someone who subscribed specifically to play it, the loss is real, and a game of this reputation is a strong draw. For those players, a one-time purchase is likely cheaper than a few more months of subscription spent on a game no longer there.

Open the Game Pass catalog and sort by recently added or filter by RPG. Pick something with a shorter commitment than a 100-hour epic if you want to get value from the monthly fee. I haven’t verified what is in the catalog today, so judge the options on the current listing rather than on any list written in advance.
