Xbox Game Pass explained: which tiers include first-party games and day-one releases

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass are the only plans Xbox currently identifies as including new games on day one. Ultimate is the console-and-PC choice, while PC Game Pass is limited to PC. Premium is not a day-one plan: Xbox says new Xbox-published games join it within 12 months of launch, with Call of Duty titles excluded from that benefit. Essential does not include new releases on day one.

Those statements come from Xbox’s current US plan descriptions and day-one FAQ. Catalogs, prices, game counts, supported platforms and availability can change by time, region, plan and platform, so check the current listing for the specific game you want.

The short answer

If your priority is playing a new release on its launch day, choose between Ultimate and PC Game Pass based on where you play. Xbox’s FAQ states: “Day one games are only included with XBOX Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.” Ultimate is the broad plan for supported Xbox consoles and PC; PC Game Pass is the PC-only option.

Premium does not provide day-one access. Xbox says new Xbox-published games are added to Premium within 12 months of launch, and its FAQ specifically excludes Call of Duty titles from that Premium timing promise. Essential also does not include new releases on day one. It is positioned around a smaller catalog and online console multiplayer instead.

#1 Best Overall
$100 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • THE PERFECT GAMING GIFT — Buy an XBOX Gift Card for yourself or a friend and let them choose the games, add‑ons, subscriptions, and accessories they want most.
  • USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.
  • GAME PASS READY — Apply your balance toward XBOX Game Pass Ultimate to play new titles on day one* and access a library of hundreds of high‑quality console games.
  • PRE‑ORDER & PRE‑INSTALL GAMES — Use your balance to pre‑order and pre‑download upcoming titles so you’re ready to play the moment they launch.
  • NO FEES OR EXPIRATION — XBOX Gift Cards never expire and have no service fees, so your balance is ready whenever you are.

“First-party” and “day one” are related but not identical. First-party generally means games published by Xbox or Microsoft. Day-one access is a timing feature. Ultimate’s comparison description covers day-one Xbox-published and third-party games, while Premium’s promise concerns delayed access to new Xbox-published games only.

What “day one” means in Game Pass

A day-one title is available through the qualifying subscription when the game launches, rather than being added months later. It does not mean every game released anywhere is included, nor does it guarantee that one title will remain in the catalog permanently. Xbox says game availability varies over time, by region, plan and platform.

Premium’s “within 12 months” language is a separate benefit. It gives Premium subscribers a stated window for new Xbox-published games, but it is not launch-day access and it has the stated Call of Duty exception. A game can therefore be an Xbox-published release without being a day-one Premium game.

Which tier includes which release benefit?

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

Ultimate is the clearest choice for a subscriber who wants new releases at launch on a console or PC supported by the particular game. Xbox’s US comparison describes its day-one library as including new Xbox-published and third-party games. The exact titles and platforms still depend on the current catalog.

Ultimate is the only tier in this comparison that combines day-one access with the broadest listed library and support for both console and PC use. It is not a guarantee that every Xbox-published title will run on every device, however; platform support remains game-specific.

Rank #2
$10 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code]

PC Game Pass

PC Game Pass also includes day-one games according to Xbox’s FAQ and plan page. It is listed as a PC-only plan, so it should not be treated as a way to access Game Pass games on an Xbox console.

Choose this tier when your intended device is a Windows PC and you want qualifying launch-day releases. Before subscribing for one title, verify that the game has a PC version and that the current PC catalog lists it under the plan.

Xbox Game Pass Premium

Premium is a delayed-access tier for new Xbox-published games. Xbox says those games join Premium within 12 months of launch. The official day-one FAQ adds the qualification that Call of Duty titles are excluded from this benefit.

That timing statement does not cover every first-party or third-party game in existence, and it does not turn Premium into a day-one plan. It is best understood as a willingness-to-wait option for subscribers who value a larger catalog and can accept a delay on qualifying Xbox-published releases.

Xbox Game Pass Essential

Essential does not include new releases on day one. Xbox presents it with a smaller listed library and online console multiplayer rather than a launch-day new-game promise.

Rank #3
$50 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code]

If a new Xbox release is the reason you are subscribing, Essential is the wrong tier for that purpose. It can still suit someone seeking the lower-priced entry point and its included catalog, provided the specific games and online features meet their needs.

Plan comparison

The following figures are from Xbox’s US plan page observed on October 13, 2026. They are product-page snapshots, not permanent guarantees. Essential and Premium were displayed with introductory offers; all prices should be rechecked in your account’s region before purchase.

Plan Launch-day access Delayed Xbox-published access Listed platform Listed library size US monthly price shown
Essential No new releases on day one Not stated as a general Premium-style benefit Xbox console features, including online console multiplayer 50+ games $9.99, shown with an introductory offer
Premium No day-one games New Xbox-published games within 12 months of launch; Call of Duty titles excluded from this benefit Xbox plan availability as listed locally; verify the game’s platform 200+ games $14.99, shown with an introductory offer
Ultimate New Xbox-published and third-party games on day one, subject to catalog and platform availability Not applicable as the defining timing benefit Console and PC use where the game is supported 500+ games $22.99
PC Game Pass Day-one games Not stated as a Premium-style timing promise PC only 300+ games $13.99

Xbox’s page uses “50+,” “200+,” “500+” and “300+” as rounded library counts. Additions, removals and regional licensing can change those totals, so they should not be read as fixed entitlements.

How to choose if you care about first-party releases

You play on an Xbox console and want launch-day games

Start with Ultimate. PC Game Pass is not a console plan, and neither Essential nor Premium includes day-one releases. Then check whether the particular game is available for your console model and region; a subscription’s day-one label does not override a game’s platform requirements.

You play only on PC

Compare PC Game Pass with Ultimate according to the other features you need. PC Game Pass is the dedicated PC option and includes day-one games. Ultimate may be relevant if you also use a supported Xbox console or want its broader cross-platform offering, but a PC player should still confirm the game’s PC listing before subscribing.

Rank #4
$25 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code]

You can wait for Xbox-published games

Premium may fit if launch-day access is not important and the stated one-year window is acceptable. Remember that “within 12 months” is a maximum timing description rather than a promise that every title arrives on a particular date, and Call of Duty releases are expressly excluded from this benefit.

You mainly want a lower-cost catalog and online console multiplayer

Essential is designed for that use case, not for new-release access. Check its current catalog for the games you actually play and treat the listed library size as a changing snapshot.

How to verify one specific game before subscribing

  1. Identify your platform. Decide whether you need an Xbox console version, a PC version or both. A title’s inclusion on one platform does not establish inclusion on another.
  2. Open the current Xbox Game Pass catalog for your region. Use the plan and platform filters shown on the current Xbox site or app rather than relying on an old screenshot, launch article or social-media post.
  3. Search for the exact game title. Check the game’s listing for the included plan, supported device and any launch-date wording.
  4. Check the timing. For a new release, distinguish “available day one” from a later catalog date. For Premium, confirm whether the game is Xbox-published and whether the listing provides a date; do not assume the 12-month language applies to Call of Duty.
  5. Confirm your local price and terms at checkout. US prices and introductory offers do not establish what another country will be charged, and promotional pricing can expire.

Common misunderstandings

“Premium includes first-party games on day one.”

Not according to Xbox’s current descriptions. Premium’s stated benefit is access to new Xbox-published games within 12 months of launch, not at launch. The FAQ excludes Call of Duty titles from that benefit.

“Every first-party game is automatically on every Game Pass platform.”

Xbox does not make that blanket promise. Games can have different console and PC versions, and availability varies by platform, region, plan and time. Verify the individual listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A day-one plan means the game stays forever.”

Day-one describes when access begins. It does not guarantee permanent catalog membership. Xbox can change availability, so keep an eye on the current listing if you are partway through a long game.

  • XBOX GIFT CARD: Buy full digital game downloads, game add-ons, in-game currency, memberships, devices, apps, movies, TV shows, and more.
  • DIGITAL GAMES: Choose from hundreds of games, from AAA to indie options. Start playing the moment your most anticipated game is available when you pre-order and pre-download it.
  • GAME AD-ONS: Extend the experience of your favorite games with add-ons and in-game currency.

  • PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.

“PC Game Pass works on Xbox consoles.”

Xbox lists PC Game Pass as PC-only. Console access requires a plan that supports the console and the game in question.

“A gift card is a Game Pass subscription.”

An Xbox gift card or account credit can be used as a payment method or redeemed through Xbox’s available code and gift-card paths, but it is not itself a Game Pass plan and does not automatically include a subscription.

What the current US figures do—and do not—tell you

The October 13, 2026 US page snapshot shows Ultimate with the largest listed library at 500+ games, followed by PC Game Pass at 300+, Premium at 200+ and Essential at 50+. Those figures help show the relative positioning of the plans, but they are not independent measurements and should not be used to predict the exact catalog in another country.

The displayed monthly prices likewise describe that US page at that time: $9.99 for Essential, $14.99 for Premium, $22.99 for Ultimate and $13.99 for PC Game Pass. Essential and Premium were presented with introductory offers. Taxes, billing terms, currency conversion, regional pricing and later price changes can alter the amount you see.

A practical decision checklist

  • Need launch-day access on console? Look at Ultimate.
  • Need launch-day access on PC only? Look at PC Game Pass.
  • Can wait up to 12 months for qualifying Xbox-published releases? Consider Premium, excluding the stated Call of Duty exception.
  • Do not need new releases and want online console multiplayer with a smaller catalog? Essential may be sufficient.
  • Choosing for one particular game? Check its current regional listing, platform support, plan inclusion and timing before paying.

The key distinction is timing: Ultimate and PC Game Pass are Xbox’s day-one plans; Premium offers delayed access to qualifying Xbox-published games; Essential does not include new releases on day one.
