If you would rather choose and keep access to specific games than pay for a rotating catalogue, buy titles individually. On Xbox, that means a digital purchase from the Xbox store or, with a disc-drive console and a supported title, a physical disc. On PC, a storefront such as Steam sells individual games under its account licence terms. A different subscription can change the catalogue, but it does not turn access into buy-to-own software.
The right route depends on your hardware, whether you want a disc, how often you play, your need for online multiplayer, and how comfortable you are with account-based licences.

The alternatives at a glance
| Route | Payment model | Format | Best fit | Important access condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox digital purchase | Pay for each selected game | Digital licence | Xbox players who want particular titles without a catalogue subscription | Access is tied to the account and the store’s applicable terms |
| Xbox Series X physical game | Pay for each disc, new or used | Physical disc | Players who want a tangible copy or the used-game market | Disc support is title- and console-specific; verify compatibility |
| PC storefront purchase | Pay for each selected game | Digital licence | PC players who want to build a personal library one title at a time | Store account, client and the platform’s licence rules apply |
| Another console subscription | Recurring payment | On-demand catalogue | Players who still want a rotating selection rather than individual purchases | Games and benefits depend on the plan, region and subscription status |
| Nintendo digital or physical purchase | Pay for each selected game | Digital or physical | Nintendo-console owners choosing individual games | Nintendo titles and hardware are not substitutes for Xbox-compatible games |
There is no honest universal game-count formula for deciding when a subscription becomes cheaper. Prices, discounts, play time and the particular games you would actually buy determine that result.

Game Pass access is recurring, and Xbox says its games, features and availability vary by time, region, plan and platform. A subscription can be excellent when you regularly use a broad catalogue, but it is an inefficient choice if you mainly play a few paid titles and do not use the other benefits.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Buying individually changes the question from “What is in the catalogue this month?” to “Which games do I want on my account or shelf?” You can wait for a sale, buy only the releases you expect to play, and avoid paying during months when you are busy. A physical copy can also let you shop for a used version, although condition, edition and compatibility require checking.
The trade-off is that individual purchases do not automatically include a catalogue, and multiplayer or other platform benefits may require a separate subscription. Compare the benefits you will actually use, not the maximum list of features advertised with a plan.
Buying individual games on Xbox
Digital purchases from the Xbox store
Xbox users can purchase a selected game directly through the Xbox store instead of subscribing to a catalogue. This is the simplest option when you already play on Xbox, do not need a disc, and want the game available through your account.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose the exact edition you intend to play; standard, deluxe and bundled editions can have different content.
- Check the product page for the supported Xbox generation and any required downloads or online features.
- Confirm that the purchase is being made on the account that will use the game.
- Review the store’s current refund, licence and account rules before completing the transaction.
Calling this “buying a game” is normal consumer shorthand, but a digital transaction is an account-based licence rather than an unrestricted physical object. The precise terms come from the relevant platform and publisher; terms applying to one storefront should not be assumed to apply to another.

What happens if you stop subscribing?
A game you purchased separately is not the same entitlement as a title accessed through Game Pass. Ending a subscription removes subscription access according to that service’s rules, while a separately purchased game remains governed by the store account and licence terms under which you bought it. Keep receipts and use the correct account if your household has multiple profiles.
Physical Xbox games: what Series X owners need to know
Disc support is real but not universal
Microsoft’s Xbox Wire announcement of August 26, 2026 says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support a feature that can attach a digital entitlement after you insert a supported disc and launch the game on Xbox One or Xbox Series X. The rollout began with thousands of titles. The announcement also says the disc continues to work as it always did.
That wording matters: “most” does not mean every game, and it does not establish support for every console configuration. A disc-drive Xbox Series X is the relevant hardware for physical Xbox games. Before buying, verify the exact title, edition, console model and any publisher requirements. Do not assume that a game without a disc edition, a special release or a particular backward-compatible version will work.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why choose a disc?
- Tangible copy: You have a physical item rather than only a download entry in an account library.
- Used-game access: You may find lower prices through used listings, subject to condition, completeness and seller reliability.
- Collecting and lending: A disc is easier to organize as a shelf collection and can be handed to another person, although each game’s licence and online requirements still matter.
- Resale possibility: A disc may be resold, but resale value is not guaranteed and depends on demand, condition, edition and local rules.
Disc-buying checklist
- Confirm that your console has a disc drive and identify whether it is Xbox Series X or another model.
- Match the listing to the exact game, region, edition and platform generation.
- Ask whether the disc is readable and whether the case, code or bonus content is included.
- Check whether the game requires a large download, an update or online services before play.
- Keep the disc: even where a digital entitlement is attached after insertion, the source announcement does not make every title permanently independent of the disc or guarantee identical behaviour for every release.
There is no published price comparison that proves discs are always cheaper or more expensive than digital copies. Sales, stock and used-market conditions change, so compare the specific listing with the current store price.

Buying PC games one at a time
Steam and the licence distinction
Steam supports individual PC-game purchases, making it a direct alternative to a catalogue subscription for players who want to select titles. Its Subscriber Agreement states that the content and services are “licensed, not sold” and that a licence confers no title or ownership in the content and services.
In practical terms, you pay for permission to use the game through your Steam account under the agreement. Steam says use may require an account, the Steam client and an internet connection. Publisher rules, regional law and the terms of another storefront can differ, so do not transfer Steam’s exact wording to Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo.
When a PC purchase makes sense
- You play primarily on a compatible PC and do not need an Xbox-console copy.
- You want to buy during a sale and keep a focused library instead of paying during months when you do not play.
- You accept that your access is mediated by the store account, client and licence terms.
Check system requirements, supported operating systems, controller support, multiplayer requirements and any publisher launcher before buying. A purchase on a PC storefront does not automatically grant a console entitlement.

PlayStation Plus
Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page describes Essential, Extra and Premium. Extra and Premium add an on-demand Game Catalog, while Premium also adds benefits such as game trials and cloud streaming. This is a useful comparison if you still want a subscription catalogue, not a direct answer to a preference for buying selected games.

The page displayed US Premium pricing of $19.99 per month, $54.99 per three months and $159.99 per year when accessed. Those are a dated US snapshot, not a worldwide or permanent price. Check your own country and the current Sony page before comparing costs.
Nintendo’s two purchase formats
Nintendo’s US store presents individual digital downloads and physical games as purchase formats. That demonstrates that console players can choose between a download and a tangible copy, but Nintendo software runs in the Nintendo ecosystem. It is not an Xbox-compatible substitute for a game you intend to play on Xbox.

Multiplayer, accounts and access terms
Separate the game licence from online service access
Buying a game does not answer every multiplayer question. A paid online game may require the platform’s applicable multiplayer subscription, while Xbox says free-to-play multiplayer is available to every Xbox player. Check the current requirement for the specific title before assuming that a one-time purchase covers online play.
Account dependence is unavoidable for digital libraries
Digital purchases on consoles and PC storefronts are associated with accounts. Protect the account with a strong, unique password and two-step verification where available, and do not buy on a profile you may later lose access to. Family-sharing and console-sharing rules are platform-specific; read the current terms rather than assuming a friend’s library transfers to you.
A practical decision process
- Identify your primary device. Choose Xbox console, PC, PlayStation or Nintendo first. A purchase must match the hardware on which you intend to play.
- List the games you actually want. Record the exact title and edition, including whether you want add-ons or a physical release.
- Choose digital or physical. Pick a digital licence for convenience and immediate download, or a supported disc when you value a tangible copy or used-market shopping.
- Check compatibility. On Xbox, verify the console model and the game’s disc or digital support. On PC, check system requirements and storefront requirements.
- Price the complete use case. Add the individual game prices, required multiplayer access and any storage or accessory needs. Compare that total with only the subscription benefits you would use.
- Review account and refund terms. Confirm the purchasing account, region, edition, licence conditions and refund window before paying.
- Reassess after a few months. If your play pattern changes, you can switch between buying selected games and subscribing; neither decision has to be permanent.
Cloud play changes announced for November 2026
Xbox Wire announced on September 3, 2026 that Game Pass would include monthly cloud hours beginning in November: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential. After included time, players would be able to buy additional hours. The same announcement described a path for people without Game Pass to buy cloud hours and stream eligible games they own.

At the October 13, 2026 information date, Microsoft had not supplied the prices, eligible-game list or market availability details. Treat the feature as an announced upcoming option, not a universally available replacement for buying and downloading games. The announcement said Microsoft expected the limits to affect 4% of subscribers; that is a forecast, not an independent measurement or a post-launch result.
Cloud hours may help someone who owns a supported game but lacks suitable local hardware, yet the practical value depends on the final price, latency, supported regions and eligible titles. Recheck the Xbox announcement and your local service page when the November changes take effect.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every Xbox game has a disc edition: physical availability is title-specific.
- Assuming every disc works on every Xbox: confirm the model, generation and supported entitlement.
- Treating a digital purchase as unrestricted ownership: storefront licences and account rules still govern access.
- Using Steam’s terms as a universal rule: Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and individual publishers have their own agreements.
- Comparing a temporary promotion with a permanent purchase price: note the promotion’s end and the recurring rate that follows.
- Counting catalogue games you will never launch: calculate value from your actual play list.
- Assuming a cloud announcement is already live: the November 2026 Xbox change still requires confirmation of prices, titles and markets.
Bottom line
For an Xbox player who prefers choosing games, individual purchases are the cleanest Game Pass alternative. Select digital Xbox purchases when convenience matters, or choose a compatible Xbox Series X disc when you want a physical copy or the used market. PC players can buy individual games through a storefront while accepting account-based licence terms. Consider another subscription only if you still want a changing catalogue, and treat the announced November 2026 cloud-hour options as provisional until Xbox publishes the final details.
