On December 10, 2020, Xbox added Pause Screen Time to its free Family Settings mobile app. A parent can use it to block a child’s Xbox account immediately—even when the child still has scheduled time left. Xbox describes an account-level block, not a command that powers down the console.
What “kick them off” actually does
Pause Screen Time temporarily stops the selected child from using their Xbox account. The child sees the standard “Your screen time is up” message. The pause ends when the parent resumes play or when the block expires at the end of that day.

Xbox does not describe this feature as shutting down an Xbox, cutting its power, ejecting a disc, or removing someone from the room. The console may remain on; the restriction is applied to the child’s account and gaming access.

Xbox said the pause control had been its “number-one requested feature from parents and caregivers.” That is a qualitative statement; Xbox did not publish a respondent count, survey method, or numerical demand figure with it.
How parents use the pause
- Set up the child’s family account and normal limits. The app supports recurring daily schedules, so a child can have different allowed times on different days.
- Open the child’s settings in the Family Settings app. Pause Screen Time can be used even if the child has not used all of that day’s allowance.
- Resume access when appropriate. Once the parent allows play again, the family’s existing game-time rules apply.
The announcements establish the pause behavior, but they do not publish a universal button label sequence for every app version. Labels and placement can change as Microsoft updates the iOS and Android apps.

Other controls in Xbox Family Settings
Scheduled screen time
Parents can create daily play schedules and review how much time a child has used. Pause Screen Time is the immediate override; scheduled limits remain the standing rule afterward.
Content and communication restrictions
Age-based content filters and settings for playing or communicating with other players can be managed from the family controls. Parents can also manage friend requests and friend-list activity.

Activity and incoming requests
Activity reports show information about a child’s gaming use. The current Xbox Family Settings page also lists incoming requests to add console screen time or friends.
Minecraft exception
The 2020 preview and launch descriptions included a Minecraft-specific setting that could permit Minecraft access and multiplayer under the configured exception, even when broader restrictions were in place.

Spending and account balance
The current product page lists account-balance and spending-history review, plus the ability to add money to a child’s account.
What Ask to Buy adds
Ask to Buy is a separate companion feature announced alongside Pause Screen Time. When enabled, a child’s game-purchase request is sent to the parent’s phone. The parent can follow a link to learn about the game, then approve or decline the request. Approved purchases appear in the app.

Supported devices and limits
Xbox’s current product information says the app manages Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. With the stated family-account setup, content and screen-time limits can also apply to Windows PCs. The page says these settings do not extend to mobile gaming experiences.

Operating-system requirements and supported-platform details can change, so check the current Xbox listing before relying on an older phone or tablet.
