Xbox Display Settings for the Best Picture on Your TV

The best Xbox picture is the highest resolution-and-refresh combination that every part of your setup can sustain: the Xbox, the television, the exact HDMI input, the cable, and any receiver, switch, or extender between them. On Xbox Series X|S, start at Settings > General > TV & display options, verify the result on 4K TV details, enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode, then configure Game Mode, HDR, VRR, and ALLM only when the connected equipment reports support.

There is no universal set of television numbers that works for every model. TV menus, HDR behavior, HDMI capabilities, and image processing differ, so use the procedures below to establish a working signal first and calibrate in the picture mode you actually use for games.

What the Xbox should output

Choose the strongest mode supported by the complete signal path, not simply the highest option shown in a specification sheet. A Series X|S can output up to 120 Hz and supports features such as variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatic low-latency mode switching (ALLM), but those features appear and work only when the television and HDMI path are compatible. A set that accepts 4K at 60 Hz does not automatically accept 4K at 120 Hz.

Refresh rate is the display’s maximum update rate; it is not a promise that every game renders at the same frame rate. Selecting 120 Hz gives compatible games and the console a 120-Hz output mode, while a game may still run at a lower frame rate or offer its own performance and quality choices.

Use the console generation as your starting point

Xbox hardware Relevant capability What must also be true
Xbox Series X|S Up to 120 Hz, with VRR and ALLM available on supported equipment The television, the particular HDMI port, cable, and any pass-through device must report the selected mode.
Xbox One S 4K and HDR content can use a 4K TV with HDR10 support For the described pass-through path, the receiver or other device must support 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2.
Xbox One X or another legacy setup Actual choices depend on the console and connected display Use the TV’s specifications and the Xbox video-information screen rather than assuming Series X|S features.

These are capability limits, not picture-quality rankings. A more expensive television does not automatically produce a better-calibrated image, and a higher refresh setting cannot overcome a port or cable that lacks the required bandwidth.

Check the TV and HDMI path before changing settings

Identify the exact HDMI input

Read the television manual or on-screen input information for the port where the Xbox is connected. Manufacturers often give only some inputs the highest bandwidth or gaming features. Look specifically for support for the resolution and refresh rate you want, HDR on that input, VRR, and ALLM. Do not infer that every HDMI socket on one television has identical capabilities.

Enable the port’s enhanced mode

Many televisions have a setting that changes an HDMI input from a basic compatibility mode to a higher-bandwidth mode. The label varies by manufacturer and model. Some Samsung sets, for example, use Input Signal Plus, also described in some documentation as HDMI UHD Color, to expose HDR on applicable inputs. Follow your television’s wording and enable the setting for the port actually connected to the Xbox; enabling it on a different port has no effect.

Account for every device in the middle

An AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, capture device, wall plate, or extender can restrict the signal even when the TV and Xbox each support it. Check that each device is specified for the same resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode, and gaming features. For an Xbox One S 4K content path described by Xbox guidance, a pass-through device also needs 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2 capability.

Use the existing cable as a diagnostic

Start with the cable supplied with the console where applicable. A replacement cable is justified only if testing shows that the current cable is the limiting link. An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable can be appropriate for a supported high-bandwidth mode, but it does not improve image quality when the present cable already carries the desired signal.

Set resolution and refresh rate on Xbox Series X|S

  1. Open Settings on the Xbox.
  2. Go to General > TV & display options.
  3. Set Resolution to the highest value the connected television and path support reliably.
  4. Set Refresh rate to the highest supported value shown by the console. Select 120 Hz only when the TV’s relevant input and the entire HDMI chain support it.
  5. Review the available video modes on the same page. Options that are missing or unavailable are useful compatibility clues, not settings to force blindly.
  6. Open 4K TV details. This screen reports what the Xbox detects from the connected setup, including which 4K, HDR, refresh-rate, and feature combinations are available.

If the screen confirms 4K at 120 Hz, you can select that combination when it suits your games. If it reports only 4K at 60 Hz, leave the console at the highest confirmed mode unless you are deliberately troubleshooting; choosing an unavailable mode cannot create support that the television or connection does not have.

When 1440p or another compromise is sensible

Some displays accept a higher refresh rate at a lower resolution than they do at 4K. In that case, compare the two modes using the console’s reported capabilities and your priorities. Choose the mode that your TV actually supports and that matches whether you value higher detail or a faster update rate. The correct choice is setup-specific; a 120-Hz selection is not automatically superior if it forces an unsupported or unstable path.

Configure the television for gaming

Turn on Game Mode when latency matters

Game Mode reduces the image processing that a television normally applies, which can lower the delay between an Xbox action and the image appearing. Enable it for the HDMI input used by the console, usually through the TV’s picture-mode menu. On some models, Game Mode changes or disables other processing controls. That is expected: it is a low-processing gaming mode, not a universal color-accuracy preset.

Let ALLM automate the switch when supported

ALLM allows compatible equipment to tell the TV when to enter its low-latency mode and when to return to a normal viewing mode. It works only when the Xbox, TV, HDMI input, and any intervening device all support the feature. If the TV does not switch automatically, use its manual Game Mode control; do not assume that an ALLM toggle on one device can make an incompatible chain support it.

Keep the TV in the picture mode you intend to calibrate

Choose the television’s gaming picture mode before running HDR calibration. A calibration performed in one mode does not necessarily describe another mode, because TVs can store separate settings for standard and HDR signals and may change available processing controls.

Enable and calibrate HDR

Confirm HDR support first

Use 4K TV details to see whether the Xbox detects HDR support. The TV must support the relevant HDR mode, and its HDMI input may require the manufacturer’s enhanced setting before HDR appears. Xbox One S guidance specifically describes a 4K TV with HDR10 support for its 4K/HDR use case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the Xbox HDR calibration tool

  1. Put the television in its gaming HDR picture mode for the Xbox input.
  2. Open the Xbox HDR calibration tool from the console’s TV and display settings. Menu labels can move with firmware updates, but the tool is part of the display-setup controls.
  3. Follow each on-screen pattern and adjust only as instructed until the reference details are barely visible at the specified points.
  4. Save the result and test it in an HDR game. If a particular game provides its own HDR sliders, use those in addition to the console calibration when the game asks for them.

The walkthrough helps tune advanced picture settings for games; it does not replace every game’s own HDR controls, and there are no universal brightness or contrast numbers that can be safely prescribed for every TV.

Xbox One S HDTV walkthrough

Xbox One S also provides an HDTV calibration walkthrough for brightness, contrast, and color. Run it with the TV input and picture mode you will use for the console. Treat its patterns as a way to match your particular display, not as a reason to copy values to another television.

Set up VRR without masking a problem

VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh behavior with a compatible game’s output within the range supported by the TV. On Series X|S, enable VRR only when the 4K TV details screen and the TV documentation confirm support for the connected input. A receiver, switch, or extender that does not pass VRR can remove the feature even if the TV itself supports it.

If you see flicker, blanking, handshake failures, or other instability after changing video options, disable VRR temporarily as a diagnostic step. If the picture becomes stable, investigate the TV firmware, input mode, cable, and intervening devices before deciding whether to re-enable it. Disabling VRR is a troubleshooting measure, not a general recommendation to leave it off.

Use this compatibility matrix when choosing a mode

Desired setup Xbox setting to try TV and connection checks Important qualification
Maximum detail at a conventional refresh rate Highest confirmed resolution, commonly 4K, at the refresh rate shown as supported Correct HDMI input, enhanced mode enabled, cable and pass-through device support that combination Do not treat a 4K/60 report as evidence of 4K/120 support.
High-refresh gaming 120 Hz on Series X|S when listed as available TV input and every HDMI device must support 120 Hz at the selected resolution Only compatible games can use a 120-Hz output; the setting does not guarantee 120 frames per second.
HDR gaming HDR option enabled when the console detects it TV HDR support, the port’s enhanced HDMI setting, and an HDR-capable cable path Calibrate in the TV’s gaming HDR mode and follow the console patterns.
Variable-refresh gaming VRR enabled when offered by the console TV input, cable, and any receiver or switch must pass VRR Turn it off temporarily if it causes instability while you diagnose the chain.
Automatic low-latency switching ALLM enabled when the equipment reports support Compatible Xbox, TV, input, and pass-through equipment Manual Game Mode remains the fallback on TVs without ALLM.

Troubleshoot missing 4K, HDR, or 120 Hz

When an option is absent from 4K TV details

  1. Check that the Xbox is connected to the television input documented for the desired feature.
  2. Enable the TV’s enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI setting for that input.
  3. Read the TV specification for that exact port, including the combination of resolution and refresh rate rather than either value alone.
  4. Temporarily remove receivers, switches, extenders, and capture devices. Connect the Xbox directly to the TV with the supplied cable.
  5. Reopen Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details and compare the report.

If direct connection restores the mode, the removed device or its cable is the bottleneck. Check that device’s specifications before replacing anything.

When HDR is missing but 4K works

Verify that the TV’s enhanced HDMI setting is active on the Xbox port and that the television supports the HDR mode expected by the console. A port can accept 4K while lacking HDR or while requiring a separate input toggle. Recheck 4K TV details after changing the TV setting.

When 120 Hz is missing

Confirm the TV supports 120 Hz at the selected resolution on that input; many sets reserve the highest refresh rate for specific ports or resolutions. Bypass intermediate equipment and test the supplied cable. If direct connection still reports no 120 Hz, the TV, its firmware, or the chosen resolution may be the limiting factor.

When the image cuts out or flickers

  • Return temporarily to a known stable resolution and refresh rate.
  • Disconnect pass-through devices and test the Xbox directly on the TV.
  • Try the console-supplied cable before purchasing another one.
  • Disable VRR temporarily to determine whether the feature is involved.
  • Re-enable features one at a time so the setting that reintroduces the fault is identifiable.

These steps isolate compatibility problems; they do not prove that one feature is defective until the rest of the chain has been tested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical setup checklist

  • Identify whether the console is a Series X|S, Xbox One S, or another model.
  • Read the television’s specification for the exact HDMI port in use.
  • Enable the port’s enhanced HDMI or high-bandwidth mode.
  • Check every receiver, switch, soundbar, extender, or capture device in the path.
  • Use Settings > General > TV & display options on Series X|S.
  • Set resolution and refresh rate to the highest combination confirmed by 4K TV details.
  • Enable Game Mode when reducing processing delay is important.
  • Use ALLM and VRR only when the connected equipment reports support.
  • Run HDR calibration in the TV’s gaming HDR mode and follow the displayed patterns.
  • Test a game, then change one setting at a time if you need to diagnose a problem.

What a correct final setup looks like

A properly configured system is not defined by a particular brand of TV or a copied list of brightness values. It is one in which the Xbox’s TV-information screen, the television’s port specification, and the physical HDMI path agree. Series X|S owners should see the modes their display actually supports in 4K TV details, use Game Mode or ALLM for low-latency play when available, and calibrate HDR with the console’s patterns. Owners of older Xbox hardware should apply the same compatibility logic while observing the additional 4K UHD, HDR10, and HDCP 2.2 requirements documented for the Xbox One S pass-through scenario.
