With an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc in a supported disc-drive console, you can claim a limited digital license and then install and play without keeping the disc inserted. You must still keep the qualifying disc, and not every game is eligible.
How Xbox Disc-to-Digital works
Microsoft describes the entitlement as a “limited access digital license.” To claim it, insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a supported Xbox console and launch the game. The license is granted when the disc is successfully claimed, according to Microsoft’s digital goods usage rules.

- Use a console that can read the qualifying game disc.
- Insert the disc and launch the game to claim the license.
- After the claim, install and play without leaving the disc in the console.
Microsoft’s rules do not promise eligibility for every disc or console configuration. Check the current eligibility of the specific title and make sure your console has a disc drive that can read it.

Who can use it, and which games qualify?
Xbox announced the feature for Insiders on August 26, 2026, with testing to begin the following week. Windows Central reported general availability for all players beginning September 29, 2026. Xbox said it was starting with “thousands of titles” and that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, while noting that not every title would be available at launch.

Those launch descriptions are not a guarantee that a particular copy qualifies. Microsoft says eligibility can vary for technical, licensing, publishing, and other reasons, and that it may add or remove eligible discs. The formal rules refer to supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game discs and supported consoles; check the current status rather than assuming that a game’s platform or publisher makes it eligible.
As a snapshot, Windows Central reported on September 29, 2026 that the community-maintained XCT.live database listed 1,585 compatible and 205 unsupported games. Those are dated community counts, not official Microsoft figures, and may not reflect the current list. Windows Central also reported that selected Ubisoft and SEGA games were included at that time.

Do you still need the disc?
Yes. Although you do not need the disc inserted to play after claiming the digital license, Microsoft conditions that license on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Its rules allow the license to be revalidated and access to be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess the disc. You cannot transfer the disc-to-digital license separately from the disc.

Windows Central reported that when a disc is sold or lent, another user may be able to claim the license after installing the game, with the original holder’s access revoked until the disc is returned or the game is bought again. That is reported use behavior; Microsoft’s formal rule is that continued possession is required and access may be suspended or revoked if it is not.

Disc-to-digital versus other ways to play
| Access route | Disc needed to launch? | Key condition | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disc-only play | Yes | Keep using the physical disc in a compatible console with a disc drive. | The disc remains the way you access the game. |
| Disc-to-digital license | No, after the license is claimed | Keep possession of the qualifying disc; the title must be eligible. | Install and launch without inserting the disc, subject to Microsoft’s limited-license rules. |
| Purchased digital game | No | Microsoft’s ordinary digital-game account and home-console rules apply. | This is a separate digital purchase, not a license obtained from a disc. |
Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming can extend access beyond the console only for games and services that support those features. They are not automatic benefits of every disc-to-digital claim.

Xbox VP Next Generation Jason Ronald called the feature “part of our broader commitment to game preservation” in the Xbox announcement. Practically, a qualifying disc can provide a more convenient way to install and play without repeatedly inserting it. Windows Central cited delisted games among examples reported to have become playable digitally when a physical copy qualified, but that does not mean every delisted title is supported.

- Title line up: Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear (NES/FC version), and Snake’s Revenge
- Digital books: Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear, and Metal Gear; Screenplay and Master Books included
- Video: Metal Gear Solid; Digital Graphic Novel and Metal Gear Solid 2; Digital Graphic Novel
- Includes Metal Gear Solid: Digital Soundtrack
The feature improves access for some physical games; it does not turn the disc into an independent digital purchase or guarantee permanent access. Availability remains title-specific, the disc must stay in your possession, and access remains subject to supported hardware and Microsoft’s account and service rules. Eligibility can also change.
