An Xbox controller that will not connect or charge is usually recoverable without opening it. Start by identifying the controller’s USB connector, then replace or reseat its power source, test it with a known-good USB data cable, resync it, and only then attempt firmware recovery. Xbox Series X|S Model 1914 uses USB-C, while many older Xbox One controllers, including Model 1708, use Micro-USB; using the wrong cable cannot solve the problem.
Start with the symptom, not the cable
The fastest fix depends on whether the controller fails to start, fails only wirelessly, fails only over USB, or stopped working during an update. Use the symptom as a routing guide, then follow the full sequence below so a weak battery or wrong connector does not send you toward unnecessary repairs.

| What you observe | Most useful first checks |
|---|---|
| No lights, no response | Replace AA batteries or reseat and charge the rechargeable pack; then test wired operation. |
| Controller blinks but will not pair | Check power, resync with the console, remove nearby wireless interference, and disconnect unused controllers. |
| Works by cable but not wirelessly | Repeat the sync-button procedure after the power check; investigate interference or a saturated controller connection list. |
| Does not work by cable or wirelessly | Try the correct connector, a known-good data cable, another console USB port, fresh power, and USB firmware recovery. |
| Stopped during a firmware update | Keep it connected by USB and rerun the update through the console’s Devices and Accessories flow or the Xbox Accessories app on Windows 10 or 11. |
1. Identify the controller generation and USB connector
Do this before buying or borrowing a cable. Xbox controllers that look similar can use different connectors, and a physically incompatible cable cannot provide a useful test.

Many Xbox One controllers, including Model 1708: Micro-USB
Many older Xbox One controllers, including Model 1708, use Micro-USB rather than USB-C. Use a Micro-USB data cable for these controllers. A USB-C cable is not an upgrade for a Micro-USB controller; it is simply the wrong connector.
How the connector check changes your next step
- If the port is USB-C, select a known-good USB-C data cable.
- If the port is Micro-USB, select a known-good Micro-USB data cable.
- Do not force a plug into the port or use an adapter as your first diagnostic. Adapters add another possible failure point and can damage a loose or misaligned connector.
2. Check power before diagnosing wireless pairing
Battery condition affects more than startup. A depleted or failing power source can prevent the controller from turning on, make wireless connection unreliable, or make charging appear to fail. Power checks are inexpensive and reversible, so perform them before opening the controller.
Controllers using AA batteries
- Turn the controller over and remove the battery cover.
- Replace both disposable AA cells with a fresh, matched pair. Do not combine an old cell with a new one.
- Confirm that each cell follows the polarity marks in the compartment.
- Refit the cover and press the Xbox button.
If the controller starts with fresh AAs, the original cells were the immediate cause. If it still shows no response, continue with the wired test rather than repeatedly pressing the power button.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsControllers using a rechargeable battery pack
- Remove and reseat the pack so its contacts sit fully in the compartment.
- Charge the pack using the charging method intended for that pack.
- Try the controller again after charging.
A pack that will not hold a charge should be replaced. A failing pack can create two apparently separate symptoms: the controller may not start reliably, and its wireless connection may drop even when it briefly powers on. Replacing the pack is a safer first move than opening the controller.
What the power result tells you
- Fresh batteries or a healthy pack restore operation: the controller and wireless system may be fine; monitor the old power source for recurrence.
- Power is restored but wireless remains unavailable: proceed to the cable and resync checks.
- There is still no response: perform the wired isolation test with the correct connector and a data-capable cable.
3. Use USB as an isolation test
A wired test separates a power, cable, or console-port problem from a wireless-pairing problem. It is not enough for a cable merely to fit: the cable must be known good and support data as well as charging.

- Try to operate the controller while it remains connected.
- If there is no response, unplug it and try another USB port on the console.
- If possible, repeat the test with a second known-good data cable of the same connector type.
If the controller works over USB
The controller’s buttons and main electronics can communicate with the console, so focus on wireless pairing, interference, or the power source. Leave it connected while you perform a firmware check if an update was interrupted.
If the controller still fails over USB
Do not conclude that wireless pairing is the only issue. The remaining possibilities include the cable, the console USB port, the controller’s charging/data port, its battery or pack, or its firmware. Test the other port and cable before treating the controller as failed.

A charging-only cable may supply power without carrying the data required for wired control or firmware recovery. That can produce a controller that appears to light up but remains invisible to the console or the Xbox Accessories app. Replace it with a cable confirmed to support data before escalating.
4. Resync the controller to the console
If the controller powers on and works by cable but not wirelessly, repeat the pairing process after the power and cable checks. A blinking Xbox light generally means the controller is searching rather than completing a wireless connection.
- Turn on the Xbox console.
- Press the console’s sync button.
- Within the pairing window, press the controller’s sync button.
- Wait for the controller light to stop blinking and remain connected.
- Test the controller wirelessly after disconnecting the cable.
If the first attempt fails, repeat the sequence once after moving closer to the console and turning off nearby wireless devices. Pairing should be tested only after the controller has a reliable power source; otherwise a weak battery can look like a sync failure.

5. Remove wireless interference and connection saturation
Wireless-only failures can come from the environment rather than a damaged controller. Xbox One troubleshooting guidance also identifies an eight-controller connection limit. A console that already has eight controllers connected may reject another pairing attempt.

Reduce interference for the test
- Move or turn off nearby wireless devices temporarily.
- Bring the controller closer to the console while pairing.
- Keep the console and controller in the same open area for the test rather than behind dense furniture or other electronics.
Free a controller slot
- Turn off or disconnect controllers that are not being used.
- Wait briefly for the console to release those connections.
- Run the console-sync and controller-sync procedure again.
If the controller works immediately after unused controllers are disconnected, the original failure was connection saturation rather than a charging fault.
6. Recover an interrupted firmware update
A controller that stopped working during an update may lose wireless availability until its firmware is recovered over USB. This situation is different from ordinary pairing: repeatedly pressing the sync buttons will not repair an incomplete update.
- Identify the controller connector and attach the correct USB-C or Micro-USB data cable.
- Connect the controller directly to the Xbox console. If the console does not detect it, try another console USB port and another known-good data cable.
- Open the console’s Devices and Accessories flow and select the controller.
- Rerun the available controller update while the cable remains connected.
- If you are using a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, connect the controller by USB and use the Xbox Accessories app to run the update instead.
- After the update completes, disconnect the cable and repeat the normal sync-button pairing procedure.
Do not interrupt the cable connection while firmware is being written. If the update fails to start, return to the cable and port checks: a charging-only cable, loose connector, or unstable USB port can prevent recovery.
7. Troubleshoot charging separately from connecting
“Won’t charge” can describe several different failures. The controller may not receive power, the rechargeable pack may no longer retain it, or the controller may charge but still fail to pair wirelessly.

When the controller shows no charging response
- Confirm that the cable matches the controller’s connector generation.
- Use a different known-good data cable of that connector type.
- Try another console USB port.
- Reseat the rechargeable pack and test with a replacement pack if the original will not hold charge.
When it powers on but will not connect
Charging has supplied enough power, so continue with resyncing and interference checks. USB power alone does not prove that wireless pairing is healthy.
When it works only while plugged in
The battery or rechargeable pack is the leading suspect. Replace disposable AAs or the failing pack before treating the wireless circuitry as defective. If a fresh power source makes no difference, repeat the wireless and firmware steps.
8. Decide whether the fault is reversible or physical
Use the least invasive fixes first. Battery replacement, cable replacement, another USB port, resyncing, and USB firmware recovery can all be undone and do not require opening the controller.
| Diagnostic axis | What to verify | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Connector generation | USB-C on Series X|S Model 1914; Micro-USB on many Xbox One models, including Model 1708 | A cable must match the port before its result is meaningful. |
| Power source | Disposable AA cells or a rechargeable pack | Replace depleted cells or a pack that no longer holds charge before deeper diagnosis. |
| Symptom scope | Wireless-only, wired-only, or both wired and wireless | Wireless-only failures point toward pairing or interference; failures in both modes require cable, port, power, firmware, or board checks. |
| Reversibility | Battery or cable replacement before opening the controller | Start with external, low-risk checks and reserve repair or service for persistent faults. |
9. Escalate persistent failures to service or repair
If a controller still fails after the following complete sequence, a physical fault becomes more likely:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Correct connector identified.
- Fresh AA batteries or a replacement rechargeable pack tested.
- Known-good data cable tested.
- More than one console USB port tested.
- Console and controller resynced.
- Nearby wireless devices moved or turned off.
- Unused controllers disconnected so the eight-controller limit is not reached.
- USB firmware recovery attempted after an interrupted update.
Likely remaining causes include a failed cable that was not actually data-capable, a damaged charging/data port, a battery or pack that is electrically failing, wireless circuitry, or the controller board itself. Use Microsoft service or an appropriate repair guide. Do not repeatedly force a loose plug, pry at the port, or open the controller while a service option is available; those actions can turn an intermittent connection into permanent physical damage.

Which fix should you try first?
If the controller will not turn on
Replace the AA cells or reseat and charge the rechargeable pack. If it remains unresponsive, use the correct USB data cable and another console port.
If the controller is blinking and never pairs
Confirm a healthy power source, disconnect unused controllers, reduce nearby wireless activity, and run the console-sync/controller-sync sequence again.
If it works wired but not wirelessly
Keep the power source installed, repeat pairing, and test away from nearby wireless devices. If the problem began during an update, run USB firmware recovery before further pairing attempts.
Recommended Free Tools
If it will not work wired or wirelessly
Recheck whether the controller needs USB-C or Micro-USB, substitute a known-good data cable, test another port, replace the power source, and attempt the update through Devices and Accessories or Xbox Accessories on Windows 10/11.
If a USB-C cable is the proposed solution
It can help only when the controller has a USB-C port, the cable carries data, and the underlying fault is power, cable, port, or firmware related. It will not fit a Micro-USB Xbox One controller, will not repair a failed rechargeable pack by itself, and will not restore damaged wireless circuitry.
Final decision point
Most connection failures are isolated by checking power, matching the connector, testing a data-capable USB cable, and resyncing under low-interference conditions. An interrupted update adds one special requirement: recover the firmware over USB before expecting wireless pairing to return. When those checks fail with fresh power, multiple cables or ports, and a completed recovery attempt, stop forcing connections and arrange Microsoft service or a suitable repair.
