Xbox Cloud Gaming runs the game on Microsoft’s servers and streams it to your device. PS5 Remote Play runs the game on your own PS5 and streams that console’s output to another screen. That distinction determines whether you need a console, which games are available, what subscriptions apply, and how you should troubleshoot performance.

Xbox Cloud Gaming and PS5 Remote Play are different kinds of streaming
The word “streaming” describes the delivery method, not the location of the game engine. Xbox Cloud Gaming is a hosted session: Microsoft supplies the remote Xbox hardware, runs the title, and sends you an interactive video feed. PS5 Remote Play is a console extension: your PS5 supplies the processor, storage and game installation, while the remote device acts as a display and controller.
That difference affects availability. Cloud Gaming can work in a hotel, at a friend’s house or on a television without an Xbox console in the room, provided the account, title, device and region are eligible. Remote Play can work away from home too, but the PS5 must be online and available at home. If the PS5 is switched off without network wake configured, disconnected, or being used in a way that prevents a session, the remote device has nothing to connect to.

How Xbox Cloud Gaming works
With Xbox Cloud Gaming, a remote Xbox session is created in Microsoft’s data center. Your controller inputs travel over the internet, the server runs the game, and a compressed video stream returns to your screen. Your phone, browser, television or other client displays the stream rather than rendering the game locally.
For most games, you need an eligible Game Pass subscription, a supported title and a supported device. The important exception is selected free-to-play games, which can be launched with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Owning a game does not automatically mean it is streamable: cloud rights are title-specific and can change.
Supported devices and connection
Xbox lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, selected LG, Samsung and VIDAA OS televisions, Amazon Fire TV and selected Meta Quest headsets. The exact list, operating-system support and regional availability can change, so check the live Xbox page for your country and device.

- Plan for at least 10 Mbps download speed on mobile. Xbox notes that some devices may require 20 Mbps for best quality.
- Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi when available; distance from the router, interference, congestion and upload conditions still affect responsiveness.
- Check that your browser or television app is supported, rather than assuming every device that can play video can run an interactive cloud session.
Starting a cloud session
- Confirm that your Game Pass plan, region and intended game support cloud play. For a free-to-play title, sign in with a Microsoft account and confirm that the title is offered in your region.
- Open the supported Xbox cloud-gaming experience on your compatible device and sign in.
- Pair a compatible controller. On a television or headset, follow that device’s controller-pairing instructions.
- Select the game and choose the cloud-play option. The service allocates a remote session; loading time and image quality can vary with demand and network conditions.
Cloud Gaming is therefore useful when you do not own an Xbox console, when you want to play on a low-power screen, or when your installed hardware is unavailable. It is less suitable when your game is not in the catalog, your region is unsupported, or your connection has unstable latency.
How PS5 Remote Play works
PS5 Remote Play is a remote display and control feature, not cloud gaming. The PS5 installs and runs the game. Your phone, tablet, computer, compatible television, console or PlayStation Portal receives the video and sends controls back to that console.
You need a PS5 connected to broadband, a compatible client device, the relevant PlayStation app or integrated feature, and a compatible installed game. The console must be online. For Portal, PlayStation says the PS5 must be powered on or in Rest Mode and paired with the device.
Game and accessory limits
Remote Play generally works with compatible PS5 games installed on the console. Titles that require PlayStation VR, certain additional peripherals or PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming are excluded. A game’s own accessory requirements still apply: Remote Play cannot remove the need for hardware that the game requires.

Connection requirements
- PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed.
- It recommends 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience.
- Mobile data can be used, but streaming consumes the allowance on your cellular plan.
- Network quality, Wi-Fi interference, console placement and other household traffic can matter more than a speed-test headline number.
- Because the session travels from the PS5 through your home internet connection, the home upload path matters as well as the download path at the remote device.
Enabling and using Remote Play
- On PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- To wake the console remotely, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable staying connected to the internet and enabling PS5 turning on from the network.
- Install the supported PS Remote Play app on your compatible phone, tablet or computer, or use the supported Portal feature.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5 and follow the pairing prompts. Keep the console powered on or in Rest Mode.
- Choose the PS5, select an installed compatible game and connect a supported controller. On mobile, verify that the controller and app combination is supported before buying accessories.
Remote Play is strongest for a PS5 owner who wants to move from the television to another room or continue an installed game while the main screen is occupied. It does not let you play when the PS5 is unavailable, offline or unable to run the title.

Subscription, ownership and ongoing cost considerations
The services charge for different things. Xbox Cloud Gaming usually sits inside an eligible Game Pass plan, although selected free-to-play games are an exception. The relevant cost is therefore the current plan price in your country, plus any game that is not included and any compatible controller or supported screen you choose to use. Game Pass names, tiers, prices and cloud catalogs can change, so verify the live offer before subscribing.
PS5 Remote Play has no general PlayStation Plus Premium requirement. It does require the PS5 itself, the game installed on that console and an internet connection. You may already own those items, which can make Remote Play the lower additional-cost option for a PS5 owner. It is not a way to avoid buying or otherwise accessing the game. The separate PlayStation cloud-streaming service does require PlayStation Plus Premium, and its price and availability vary by account region.
Do not compare a subscription library directly with a personal console library without checking the title rules. A game can be installed on your PS5 and therefore usable through Remote Play while absent from an Xbox cloud catalog. Conversely, Xbox Cloud Gaming can provide access to an eligible title without an Xbox console, but only while the title remains supported and your plan or free-to-play eligibility applies.
Do not confuse Remote Play with PlayStation cloud streaming
PlayStation also offers a separate cloud-streaming service for eligible PS5 games on PS5 or PlayStation Portal. In that model, Sony’s servers run the game, so it is the closer PlayStation counterpart to Xbox Cloud Gaming. It requires PlayStation Plus Premium and is restricted by account, region, device and title eligibility.

These are current figures on PlayStation’s US cloud-streaming page, not guarantees of resolution or latency. Check PlayStation’s PS5 game cloud-streaming information for the current eligible titles and regions. PlayStation Plus Premium is relevant to this service, not a general prerequisite for PS5 Remote Play.
The distinction matters when diagnosing a Portal purchase. Portal can be used as a Remote Play client for your PS5, while its cloud-streaming capability follows the separate Premium service’s account, region and title rules. Seeing a cloud option on a device does not mean every PS5 game is available there.

Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming when:
- You do not own an Xbox console but want to play supported Xbox games.
- Your game is in the eligible cloud catalog or is a supported free-to-play title.
- You have a supported phone, tablet, PC, television, Fire TV or other listed client.
- You prefer a subscription library instead of installing games locally.
- You want the session hosted remotely, so an Xbox at home does not need to be powered on or connected.
Choose PS5 Remote Play when:
- You already own a PS5 and the game is installed on it.
- You want to use a second screen without buying another console.
- You need access to your own game library, including titles not offered by a cloud catalog.
- Your PS5 can remain connected and available at home.
- You want to use the same saved game and console environment you use on the main television.
Compare PlayStation cloud streaming instead when:
Your real requirement is “PlayStation games without using my own console to run the session.” In that case, compare Xbox Cloud Gaming with PlayStation’s separate cloud-streaming service, not with Remote Play. Compare the eligible libraries, Premium or Game Pass plan, supported devices, country availability and current title list.
Latency, image quality and data use
Neither company’s bandwidth number predicts a fixed frame rate, image quality or input delay. A connection can exceed the minimum and still feel poor if latency fluctuates, packets are lost, Wi-Fi is congested or the service is busy. Ethernet or a strong 5 GHz connection, a nearby router and reduced background traffic usually provide a more stable starting point, but neither publisher promises a particular experience from speed alone.
Cloud Gaming sends video from a data center to you; Remote Play sends video from your home PS5. The physical distance to the relevant server or console, your home upload capacity and your ISP’s routing can therefore produce different results. Remote Play also uses your home connection in both directions, while cloud play does not require your own console’s upstream connection.

On cellular networks, monitor data consumption and signal changes. A phone may meet the nominal download requirement in one location and fail in another because of congestion or radio conditions. If a session is shared with video calls, downloads or other players, pause those activities while testing. A speed test taken at a quiet time does not establish how the connection will behave during evening congestion.

Controllers, Portal and practical setup choices
A compatible Bluetooth game controller can make phone, tablet, PC or television play substantially easier than touch controls. Compatibility varies by operating system, client and game, so check the official Xbox or PlayStation list for the exact combination before purchasing. A controller that pairs successfully with a phone may still lack support in a television app or a particular game.
PlayStation Portal Remote Player is a dedicated device for PS5 owners. In its Remote Play role, it uses your PS5; it does not replace the console. Its separate cloud-streaming capability has PlayStation Plus Premium and eligibility requirements described by PlayStation. Before buying Portal, confirm that your PS5 location has a dependable connection and that the games you intend to play are compatible with Remote Play.
Xbox also supports console-to-device streaming through Xbox Remote Play, which is different from Xbox Cloud Gaming: the former streams from your own Xbox, while the latter runs games in Microsoft’s cloud. See Xbox Remote Play when evaluating that console-based option.
A decision checklist
- Identify the session location. If the game must run without your console, examine cloud gaming. If your console should run it, examine Remote Play.
- Check the exact title. Verify cloud eligibility, installation status, peripheral requirements and regional restrictions.
- Check the device. Confirm operating-system, app, television, browser and controller support for your model.
- Check the plan. Xbox cloud play usually uses an eligible Game Pass plan, with selected free-to-play exceptions. PlayStation cloud streaming uses Premium; PS5 Remote Play is a console feature.
- Check the network at the play location. Use the publisher minimums as a baseline, then test stability at the time and place you will actually play.
- Decide whether ownership matters. Cloud catalogs change with plan, region and time. Remote Play gives access to compatible games installed on your own PS5, but only while that console is available.
- Account for peripherals. Verify VR, camera, guitar, racing-wheel or other requirements before assuming a remote session can reproduce the local setup.
- Budget for the complete setup. Include the console or subscription you actually need, the game, a controller and any mobile-data charges rather than comparing subscription labels alone.
Common problems and fixes
The game does not appear
For Xbox, confirm the title’s current cloud eligibility, your Game Pass plan, region and device. For Remote Play, install the game on the PS5 and verify that it is compatible; VR, required peripherals and Premium-only streaming titles are common exclusions.
Remote Play cannot find the PS5
Confirm that Remote Play is enabled, the console is signed into the same account, the PS5 is online, and Rest Mode network wake settings are enabled. Pair the client again if the account or network has changed. If the console has been fully powered down, wake it locally before concluding that the app is defective.
Video is blurry or controls feel delayed
Move closer to the router, prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi or wired networking where supported, pause competing downloads and check upload as well as download performance. If the issue affects only one service, server distance, routing or service demand may be responsible; bandwidth alone cannot identify the cause. Try the same client on another network to separate a home-network problem from a service or routing problem.
Mobile play stops unexpectedly
Check cellular data limits, background battery restrictions, signal quality and whether the device switched between Wi-Fi and mobile data. A controller disconnect or an unsupported app/device combination can also end a session. Keep the app in the foreground where required and disable aggressive battery-saving modes during testing.
The picture is acceptable but inputs feel inconsistent
Look for jitter and packet loss rather than only peak download speed. Reduce wireless interference, use the nearer band or a wired connection, and stop other uploads. On Remote Play, test the PS5’s wired connection if possible; on cloud play, try a supported device closer to the router. Neither test guarantees a result, but it helps identify which part of the path is changing.

No. VR titles, games needing certain additional peripherals and games requiring PlayStation Plus Premium streaming are excluded.
Is PlayStation Portal cloud gaming?
Portal can use Remote Play from your PS5. Its separate cloud-streaming feature has PlayStation Plus Premium and title, device and region eligibility requirements.
The Bottom Line
Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming for hosted play without an Xbox console. Choose PS5 Remote Play when you own a PS5 and want to stream its installed games. For PlayStation cloud play without using your own console, compare Xbox Cloud Gaming with PlayStation’s separate Premium cloud-streaming service.
