Short answer: Xbox is the only one of these services with an official direct-to-TV route that can work without a game console. The Xbox app runs on selected Samsung and LG smart TVs, certain Amazon Fire TV devices and selected VIDAA televisions. PlayStation Plus cloud streaming is documented for PlayStation 5 consoles and PlayStation Portal; for a living-room television, Sony’s documented route is a PS5 connected to the TV. Portal is a handheld remote player, not a TV streaming stick.
That difference determines the purchase. If you want cloud games on a TV without buying a console, start by checking whether your television supports the Xbox app. If you want Sony’s cloud library on a television, budget for a PS5, a compatible controller and PlayStation Plus Premium.

What “cloud gaming on a TV” means in this comparison
Cloud gaming renders a game on a remote server and sends the video to your screen while your controller inputs travel back over the internet. You do not install the full game locally, but you still need a supported endpoint, a subscription where required, a compatible controller and a connection with low enough delay and stable throughput.

There are two different meanings of “playing on a TV” here:

- Direct TV app: the television or a plugged-in streaming device runs the service app. No console is required for the supported Xbox route.
- Console connected to TV: the service runs on a PS5, which outputs the picture to the television. This is still cloud streaming, but you must own the console.
PlayStation Portal belongs to neither TV category. It is a handheld device that remotely plays compatible content; it does not turn a television into a PlayStation cloud endpoint.

Neither service promises that every game in a subscription catalog is streamable. Check the specific games you intend to play before choosing a platform.
Which TVs and devices support Xbox Cloud Gaming?
The current Xbox on TVs page lists four device families. “Selected” is important: support can depend on model year, operating-system version, country and the current app rollout.
Samsung smart TVs and monitors
Xbox lists selected Samsung smart TVs from 2020 onward and selected Samsung smart monitors from 2022 onward. A model’s year alone is not enough; confirm that the Xbox app appears in the television’s app store for your region and that the installed software is supported.
LG televisions
LG support includes televisions running webOS 24 or newer, plus some 2022 and 2023 models updated to software version 23.20.01 or later. Update the TV before troubleshooting the app, then verify the exact model on Xbox’s live compatibility page.
Amazon Fire TV devices

A compatible Fire TV device can be useful when a television lacks the Xbox app, but it does not add PlayStation Plus cloud streaming. Availability of the app and service can still vary by market.

Xbox lists selected VIDAA OS devices running version 9.6 or higher. Check the TV’s software-information screen and the current Xbox list rather than assuming every VIDAA set qualifies.
Hisense and V homeOS announcement
An Xbox Wire announcement dated January 5, 2026 said the Xbox app was coming during 2026 to selected Hisense and V homeOS-powered smart TVs. The announcement did not publish a definitive model list or confirm the rollout state for every market. Treat those televisions as unconfirmed until the app is visible for your exact model and region.
What Sony officially supports for cloud streaming
Sony’s Cloud streaming on PS5 page documents two endpoints: PS5 and PlayStation Portal. The page does not list a smart-TV application comparable to the Xbox TV app.
PS5 connected to a TV
A PS5 is the living-room option. Connect it to the television over HDMI, sign in with the account holding PlayStation Plus Premium, and start an eligible title’s cloud-streaming option. The game is rendered remotely, but the console remains necessary as the endpoint.

PlayStation Portal
Portal is a handheld remote player. It is designed for playing away from the TV and should not be described as a streaming dongle, smart-TV app or replacement for a PS5 connected to a display. It therefore does not satisfy the “cloud games directly on my TV without a console” use case.

Selected-game limitation
Sony says only selected PS5 games can stream. Eligible titles can come from the PlayStation Store, Game Catalog, Classics Catalog and selected free-to-play offerings. Use Sony’s game finder for the individual titles you care about; a game’s presence in a catalog does not by itself establish cloud eligibility.
Subscription and account requirements
Xbox
Xbox says cloud gaming is included with Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate. Its TV FAQ also says an active Game Pass subscription and supporting games are required for most cloud games. Plan names, entitlements, prices and regional availability can change, so use the current local Xbox plan page when subscribing rather than relying on an old price quoted in an article.
Some free-to-play games may be cloud playable, but do not assume that every free-to-play title is available on every TV, plan or market. The title page or cloud-play indicator is the decisive check.

PlayStation
PlayStation Plus Premium is required for the cloud-streaming feature described on Sony’s page. You also need a PlayStation Network account, a PS5 for TV play and a controller supported by the console and game.
Premium membership does not make the entire PlayStation library streamable. Sony’s selected-game rule applies even when a title is otherwise available through a catalog or store purchase.
Internet speed, latency and picture quality
Vendor speed figures are thresholds or recommendations, not guarantees of smooth play. Latency to the cloud region, Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, congestion, the television or streaming device and the game itself can matter as much as headline download speed.

Xbox guidance
Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps for stable cloud gaming and advises using a wired Ethernet connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. That figure is a recommendation from Xbox’s 2025 getting-started guide, not a promise of a particular resolution or input response.

Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as the minimum to establish a cloud-streaming session. It recommends the following speeds by target resolution:

These are Sony’s recommendations, not measured guarantees. A line that passes a speed test can still feel poor if latency spikes or the wireless signal drops.
Practical home-network checks
- Use Ethernet to the TV, Fire TV device or PS5 when possible.
- If using Wi-Fi, prefer 5 GHz and keep the access point close enough for a strong signal.
- Pause large downloads, 4K video uploads and other heavy traffic during play.
- Run a speed test at the same location and time you normally play; a test beside the router may not represent the TV.
- Judge responsiveness as well as throughput. Delayed menus, repeated image blocks and controller actions arriving late indicate a network-quality problem even when the speed number looks adequate.
How to set up Xbox Cloud Gaming on a TV
- Confirm the endpoint. Check the model and software against the live Xbox on TVs list. For Fire TV, verify that your device is one of the listed generations.
- Update the device. Install the latest TV firmware or Fire TV software, then restart it. LG owners should pay particular attention to webOS 24 or later, or the stated 23.20.01 update for supported older models.
- Install the Xbox app. Open the television or Fire TV app store, search for Xbox and install the official app. If it is absent, the model, region or rollout may not be supported; do not sideload an unofficial package.
- Sign in. Use the Microsoft account that owns the Game Pass subscription. Complete any on-screen account-linking code from a phone or computer.
- Connect a controller. Pair a supported Bluetooth controller or connect by USB where the device permits it. Xbox says official Xbox controllers, Sony PlayStation controllers and more may be supported, but directs users to its verified-controller list; compatibility is not universal.
- Check the network. Aim for Xbox’s 20 Mbps recommendation, preferably over Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Stop other bandwidth-heavy activity before testing a game.
- Choose a cloud-eligible title. Open the cloud section or look for the cloud-play indicator. Verify the exact game rather than assuming that its presence in Game Pass means it can stream.
- Start and evaluate. Play for several minutes, watching for input delay, resolution changes or disconnects. If the session is unstable, use the troubleshooting branches below before replacing hardware.
How to set up PlayStation cloud streaming on a TV
- Use a PS5. Connect the console to the TV over HDMI and complete the normal system and PlayStation Network setup. Sony’s documented TV endpoint is the PS5, not a smart-TV app.
- Subscribe to PlayStation Plus Premium. Sign in with the account that holds the Premium membership. The cloud-streaming benefit is tied to that account.
- Update the console and controller. Install available PS5 system and DualSense updates so the streaming interface and eligible-game checks are current.
- Test the connection from the PS5’s play location. Sony’s minimum is 5 Mbps both down and up to establish a session; use the higher resolution recommendations if you want 720p, 1080p, 1440p or 2160p output.
- Find an eligible game. Use Sony’s game finder or the cloud-streaming label in the PS5 interface. Only selected titles can stream.
- Start cloud streaming. Select the game’s cloud-streaming option instead of downloading it. The PS5 handles the TV output while the game runs on Sony’s servers.
- Keep Portal’s role separate. If you also use PlayStation Portal, treat it as a handheld endpoint. It does not provide a method for showing PlayStation cloud games directly on the television.
Which service fits common buying scenarios?
You do not own a console and want the least hardware
Xbox is the practical match if your existing TV is on the supported list, or if you are willing to add a listed Fire TV device. You still need a controller, Game Pass entitlement and adequate internet, but no Xbox console is required for that route.
You already own a PS5 connected to the TV
PlayStation Plus Premium can add cloud streaming to the console you already use. It is useful when you want to try an eligible title without downloading it, subject to Sony’s selected-game list and network guidance.
Your television is unsupported but you can add a streaming device
A listed Fire TV Stick or Fire TV Cube can provide the Xbox app when the TV itself lacks support. Confirm that the app and service are available in your country before buying the device. This workaround does not create a PlayStation TV endpoint.

You mainly want a handheld experience
PlayStation Portal is designed for handheld remote play, while Xbox cloud gaming can also run on compatible phones, PCs and other supported devices. Those are different use cases from playing on the living-room TV and should not be treated as equivalent hardware.
You care about one particular game
Search that title in each platform’s current cloud catalog first. Xbox availability varies by plan, region, platform and time; Sony limits streaming to selected games. A larger advertised catalog is not evidence that your chosen game will stream.
Troubleshooting: what to check when it does not work
The Xbox app is missing
- Recheck the exact model, TV year and operating-system version against Xbox’s current list.
- Install pending firmware updates and restart the TV or Fire TV device.
- Confirm the store region and Microsoft account region; app availability can differ by market.
- If you are considering a Hisense or V homeOS model, remember that the January 2026 announcement did not establish a complete model list or universal rollout.
The app opens but a game cannot start
- Verify that the Game Pass subscription is active on the signed-in account.
- Look for the cloud-play indicator and check whether the title is available in your plan and region.
- Try another known cloud-eligible game to distinguish a title restriction from a device or network fault.
- Sign out and back in after changing subscriptions or account permissions.
PlayStation streaming is unavailable on the TV
- Confirm that you are using a PS5 connected to the TV; Sony’s cited page does not document a smart-TV app.
- Check that the account has PlayStation Plus Premium, not a lower PlayStation Plus tier.
- Verify the game’s cloud eligibility with Sony’s game finder.
- Update the PS5, test the network at the console and retry after stopping other downloads.
The picture is blocky or controls feel delayed
- Move from congested 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to 5 GHz or Ethernet.
- Stop simultaneous streaming, backups and downloads.
- Retest at a different time to identify household or ISP congestion.
- Reduce expectations about resolution when the connection only meets a minimum threshold; minimum speed establishes a session but does not guarantee a high-resolution stream.
The controller will not pair
Use the platform’s verified-controller information rather than assuming that any Bluetooth gamepad works. Xbox explicitly points users to its verified list, and PlayStation compatibility depends on the PS5, controller model and game.

Xbox Wire reported a 45% increase in overall Xbox cloud-gaming hours compared with the same time in the prior year in its December 19, 2025 getting-started guide. That is a company-reported growth figure, not an independent measurement and not a comparison with PlayStation usage. Sony’s cited pages do not provide a directly comparable user-growth statistic.
The available official information also does not establish that one service always has lower latency, better image quality, a broader game selection or better value. Those outcomes vary with region, device, plan, server distance, network conditions and the particular title. Choose on the basis of your endpoint and games rather than an unsupported overall winner.
Bottom line: which is better for a TV?
Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming when your priority is playing on a television without purchasing a console. It has the clearly documented direct-app path across selected Samsung and LG TVs, Fire TV devices and VIDAA sets. Verify the exact model, region and software first, then add a compatible controller and an active supported Game Pass plan.
Choose PlayStation Plus Cloud Streaming when you already have—or plan to buy—a PS5 for the living room and want Sony’s selected cloud-streamable games. PlayStation Portal is valuable for handheld play, but it is not a way to stream PlayStation games directly to a TV without a PS5.
