Choose GeForce NOW if you already own supported PC games in connected storefront accounts and want to stream them to a compatible TV or another supported device. There is no universal winner. The practical choice depends on your endpoint, game ownership, television model, network, region and tolerance for monthly playtime limits.
This comparison separates two meanings of console play: using a cloud service on an actual Xbox console, and getting a console-like living-room experience by streaming to a television without a console.

The short answer
Xbox Cloud Gaming is the only one of these services with published support for Xbox consoles. Xbox says cloud gaming works on Xbox One and later consoles. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW device list covers smart TVs, Fire TV, Android TV, computers, phones and other clients, but it does not list Xbox consoles.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a television without a console, both services can work on selected models. Xbox Cloud Gaming focuses on games available through its cloud catalog, generally requiring a Game Pass subscription for most TV titles. GeForce NOW connects to supported PC-store accounts and streams compatible games you own, plus supported free-to-play games. In either case, the exact title, TV model, controller and regional service availability matter more than the brand name.

What console play means in this comparison
Playing through an Xbox console
If your target device is an Xbox One, Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X, Xbox Cloud Gaming is the relevant option. Xbox’s support material identifies Xbox One and later consoles as supported cloud-gaming devices. You sign in with your Microsoft account, choose an eligible cloud title and stream it instead of installing the full game locally.
GeForce NOW is not an Xbox-console app according to NVIDIA’s published client requirements. You cannot treat it as an alternative cloud layer inside an Xbox One or Xbox Series console. A GeForce NOW subscription may still be useful on a computer, phone or supported television in the same home, but it does not add GeForce NOW access to the Xbox dashboard.
Playing on a TV without a console
Both services can provide a living-room experience when the television or attached streaming device is supported. You use the service’s TV app, pair a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller, connect to the internet and launch games from the app.

Samsung’s Gaming Hub supports both Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW on selected Samsung televisions from 2022 onward, where Gaming Hub is available. Samsung’s information is specific to Canada, so availability, app support and subscription requirements should be checked for your country. A supported TV is a shared endpoint; it does not make the services’ game catalogs or plans interchangeable.

How game access differs
Xbox Cloud Gaming: a changing catalog
Xbox Cloud Gaming is organized around an Xbox cloud catalog rather than your entire owned library. Xbox says most games in its TV app require an active Game Pass subscription and supporting games, with some exceptions. Selected free-to-play titles and most games in the Game Pass library may be available in the cloud, but availability varies over time, by region, by plan and by platform.
Before subscribing for a particular game, search the current Xbox cloud catalog while signed in to the account and region you will use. A game being included in Game Pass does not automatically mean its cloud version is available on every device. Conversely, selected free-to-play games may be playable without the same subscription requirement that applies to paid catalog titles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGeForce NOW: your connected PC stores
GeForce NOW does not provide a universal paid game library. You connect supported accounts such as Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app, GOG or Xbox, then launch games that you own and that NVIDIA supports. Supported free-to-play titles can also be available.
Store ownership and GeForce NOW support are separate conditions. Owning a PC version does not guarantee that the game can stream through the service. Check NVIDIA’s current game catalog for the exact edition and store before buying a game or membership. Some games may be available from one storefront but not another, and catalog support can change.
Where each service can run
Xbox Cloud Gaming devices
- Xbox consoles: Xbox One and later consoles are supported for cloud play.
- Televisions and TV devices: Xbox lists select Fire TV devices, select Samsung TVs, LG TVs running webOS 24 or newer, and select VIDAA OS devices running version 9.6 or later. Some older LG model years qualify after receiving the required software update.
- Other screens: Xbox also identifies consoles, PCs and tablets in its general network guidance. Exact browser, app and regional support should be checked on the current Xbox device page.
For most TV cloud games, Xbox requires a Game Pass subscription and a compatible controller. A high-speed internet connection is required, and Xbox gives 20 Mbps as general guidance for consoles, PCs and tablets. That figure is not a latency guarantee.

- Smart TVs: NVIDIA lists 2020–2025 LG and Samsung TVs with current webOS or browser updates.
- Streaming platforms: Supported Fire TV devices, Android TV and Chromecast devices, and SHIELD TV are listed by NVIDIA.
- Personal devices: Compatible computers, phones and other clients are supported according to NVIDIA’s current requirements.

Model-year labels are not enough by themselves. Check the exact television model, installed software, country and app availability before purchasing hardware for GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Samsung Gaming Hub as a shared TV endpoint
Samsung describes Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW support on selected 2022-and-newer Samsung TVs with Gaming Hub support. Cloud streaming requires a stable connection, a compatible Bluetooth controller and a subscription to the chosen service. Samsung recommends 20 Mbps or faster. Because the cited Gaming Hub information is for Samsung Canada, local app availability and plan terms must be verified separately.
Network, resolution and responsiveness
Published Xbox guidance
Xbox recommends a high-speed connection and gives 20 Mbps as a general rate for consoles, PCs and tablets. Xbox also says streaming quality depends on connection, location, device and other factors. Treat 20 Mbps as a starting point, not a guarantee of sharp video, stable frame pacing or responsive controls.
Published GeForce NOW TV targets
NVIDIA publishes more granular smart-TV targets:
| Target mode | Minimum listed bandwidth |
|---|---|
| HD, up to 60 FPS | 15 Mbps |
| Full HD, 60 FPS | 25 Mbps |
| 4K, 60 FPS | 40 Mbps |
| 4K, 120 FPS | 45 Mbps |
NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and requires less than 80 ms network latency to an NVIDIA data center. Ultimate membership is required for 4K on smart TVs. The TV, app, game, controller and local network must also support the selected mode.
Why bandwidth numbers do not predict your exact experience
A speed test measures throughput to a test server, while cloud gaming also depends on the route to the service data center, jitter, packet loss and congestion. A television can add processing delay through motion smoothing or other picture modes. Bluetooth interference can affect controller input, and a busy 2.4 GHz network can produce inconsistent frame delivery even when its headline speed looks high.

Compare stability in the games you actually play rather than assuming a published maximum will appear in your home. No controlled latency or image-quality test establishes a universal winner between these services.
Memberships, costs and monthly limits
Prices and offers vary by country and can change. The current pages cited here do not provide a stable global price table, so check the local checkout screen before subscribing.
| Service and tier | Published allowance or policy | What is not established here |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Essential | The current US Xbox TV page displays 5 hours of cloud play per month. | Local pricing, regional availability and whether the same allowance appears in every market. |
| Xbox Premium | The current US Xbox TV page displays 10 hours of cloud play per month. | Local pricing, regional availability and whether the same allowance appears in every market. |
| Xbox Ultimate | The captured current TV page did not state a monthly allowance. | Do not infer a number from memory or from another market. |
| GeForce NOW Performance | 100 hours per month, with up to 15 unused hours available to roll over. | Price depends on locale and is shown in the account membership area. |
| GeForce NOW Ultimate | 100 hours per month, with up to 15 unused hours available to roll over; Ultimate is required for 4K on smart TVs. | Price depends on locale and is shown in the account membership area. |
NVIDIA says that after reaching the monthly limit, members can purchase extra hours or continue with the free-user experience until the monthly reset. An older Xbox Wire getting-started article published on December 19, 2025 described unlimited cloud gaming with Essential, Premium and Ultimate, but the current Xbox TV page now displays explicit 5-hour and 10-hour allowances for Essential and Premium. For a current decision, use the live product page and your local account checkout; the Ultimate allowance was not stated in the available current page.
How to play Xbox Cloud Gaming on an Xbox console
- Update the Xbox console and sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the eligible Game Pass subscription.
- Open the Xbox cloud-gaming area or select a game marked as playable from the cloud. Do not assume every installed or Game Pass title is cloud-enabled.
- Confirm that the game is available in your region and on your plan. Catalog entries can change.
- Use a wired connection or a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection where possible. Xbox gives 20 Mbps as general guidance, but stability and latency are equally important.
- Start the stream and check controller response before beginning a long session. If controls feel delayed, stop downloads on the network and try Ethernet or a less congested Wi-Fi channel.
How to use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a TV
- Verify the exact TV or Fire TV model, operating-system version and country against Xbox’s current compatibility list. LG support requires webOS 24 or newer, while VIDAA support requires version 9.6 or later on selected devices.
- Install or open the Xbox app, then sign in. Some older TV models need a software update before the app appears.
- Pair a compatible controller. Xbox says a controller is needed for most TV cloud games.
- Check that the intended title is available in the Xbox cloud catalog and that your subscription covers it.
- Use a stable connection at or above Xbox’s 20 Mbps general guidance. Leave room for other household traffic, because a connection that barely meets the figure can still stutter.
How to use GeForce NOW on a TV
- Check NVIDIA’s current requirements for the exact TV, streaming stick or box, software version and country. A supported brand or model year does not guarantee every regional app.
- Install GeForce NOW and sign in or create the NVIDIA account required by your membership.
- Connect the relevant game-store accounts, such as Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app, GOG or Xbox.
- Search NVIDIA’s catalog for each game and storefront edition you plan to play. Buy or redeem the PC game through the appropriate store if you do not already own it.
- Pair a supported controller. NVIDIA lists Xbox controllers and DualSense and DualShock controllers for TV use.
- Choose a membership that matches your desired quality. Ultimate is required for 4K on smart TVs, and NVIDIA’s published bandwidth targets rise from 15 Mbps for HD/60 FPS to 45 Mbps for 4K/120 FPS.
- Prefer Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and verify latency to an NVIDIA data center is below 80 ms. If the app reports poor conditions, lower the stream mode before troubleshooting the game itself.
Common problems and fixes
The service does not appear on the TV
Check the exact model, operating-system version, country and pending firmware updates. Xbox TV support is limited to selected Fire TV, Samsung, LG and VIDAA devices. NVIDIA has its own model-year and software requirements. A television that supports one app may not support the other.
The controller pairs but does not control the game
Confirm that the controller is supported by the service and TV, then pair it from the TV’s Bluetooth settings rather than only from a phone or console. Close other devices that may be connected to the controller. On a TV, restart the cloud app after pairing so it can detect the gamepad.

Video is blurry or keeps dropping frames
Run a speed test near the TV, switch from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet, pause downloads and move the access point closer. On GeForce NOW, compare your measured bandwidth with the 15, 25, 40 and 45 Mbps targets for the selected mode. On Xbox, remember that 20 Mbps is general guidance rather than a guaranteed quality threshold.
Controls feel delayed
Latency can come from the internet route, Wi-Fi interference, TV picture processing or the controller link. Enable the TV’s game-oriented picture mode if available, disable motion smoothing, use Ethernet where practical and test with the controller close to the TV. A fast connection with high latency can still feel poor.
A game you own cannot be launched
On Xbox, verify that the title is currently cloud-enabled for your plan, region and device. On GeForce NOW, verify both the connected storefront and the exact supported edition in NVIDIA’s catalog. A game being sold by Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app, GOG or Xbox does not automatically make every version streamable.
You reach the monthly allowance
Xbox’s current US TV page displays 5 hours for Essential and 10 hours for Premium, while the available page does not state an Ultimate figure. For GeForce NOW Performance and Ultimate, the published allowance is 100 hours, with up to 15 unused hours rolling over. NVIDIA says members can buy extra hours or continue with the free-user experience until reset. Check your account’s live meter rather than relying on an older article or a plan description from another country.
Which service fits different console-play goals?
Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming when
- Your main device is an Xbox One, Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X.
- You want games selected from the Xbox cloud or Game Pass catalog instead of buying PC versions from several stores.
- You already use an Xbox account and controller ecosystem.
- Your target TV or Fire TV device appears on Xbox’s current compatibility list.
Choose GeForce NOW when
- You own supported PC games and want to use those purchases on a TV, computer, phone or supported streaming device.
- The games you care about are confirmed in NVIDIA’s catalog for the storefront editions you own.
- Your TV, subscription and network can support the resolution and frame rate you want, especially if you are targeting 4K.
- You prefer the published 100-hour monthly allowance of Performance or Ultimate and understand the rollover and extra-hour rules.
Use a TV comparison rather than a console comparison when
If you do not own an Xbox and simply want controller-based play from the sofa, compare the exact TV apps, controller pairing, catalog entries, monthly limits and local prices. Samsung Gaming Hub can place both services on one supported television, but you still need separate subscriptions and must meet each service’s requirements.
Bottom-line decision
For actual Xbox-console play, Xbox Cloud Gaming is the clear fit because Xbox One and later consoles are supported and GeForce NOW’s published client list does not include Xbox. For console-like TV play without a console, Xbox Cloud Gaming is better when the desired games are in its current cloud catalog and you value Xbox integration. GeForce NOW is better when you already own supported PC-store games and your TV or streaming device, controller and network meet its requirements.
Before paying, check three things in order: the device you will use, the exact games you want to play and the current plan allowance in your region. Those checks determine the practical winner more reliably than a generic claim about picture quality or input lag.
