Why affordability is about more than a console’s price

• Upfront hardware: A console or gaming PC can be a substantial initial expense. Xbox’s June 10 memo said storage-component costs were rising sharply, though those figures describe the company’s own reported costs rather than an independent market index.
• Recurring subscriptions: Multiple services can compete for the same monthly entertainment budget. A subscription’s value depends on whether its games and features are useful to a particular player, not just on the size of its catalogue.
• Time and attention: A library of included games has limited practical value if a player has little time to use it. Sharma explicitly included the “attention economy” in her explanation.

Sharma separately called Game Pass too expensive

The June interview was not her only affordability comment. In an internal memo reported by GameSpot on April 13, 2026, Sharma wrote: “Game Pass has become too expensive for players, so we need a better value equation. Long term, we will evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system which will take time to test and learn around.” GameSpot reported that the memo had been obtained by The Verge.

That statement signals a goal, not a completed change: it does not specify what a more flexible system would include, when it would arrive, or what it would cost. GameSpot reported that Game Pass Ultimate was $30 after an October 2025 increase described as 50%; that historical figure should not be treated as a current price guarantee, since subscription prices and terms can change and vary by region.

What Xbox says is driving its business reset

In a June 10, 2026 memo, Sharma and Xbox Game Studios chief Matt Booty described a business facing financial, hardware and portfolio pressures. These are Xbox’s own reported figures and explanations, not independent verification of every cause or forecast.

• Xbox said it had spent more than $20 billion over five years on ongoing content, platform and hardware subsidies, excluding Activision Blizzard King, while annual revenue had declined by nearly half a billion dollars over that period.
• The memo said console storage-component prices were more than twice the previous fall’s level when Sharma became CEO in February 2026, doubled again afterward, and were expected to exceed five times the price Xbox paid two years earlier by the 2027 holiday season. The final figure was a company forecast, not a verified future outcome.
• Xbox said it could not make as many consoles as players wanted to buy and needed a new hardware business model and partnerships. It also said the studio system had been overextended across changing strategies and major franchises had not been funded adequately to compete and win.
• The company said it expected to end its fiscal year at about a 3% accountability margin, down year over year.

The same memo said Xbox reaches more than 1 billion players a year, across console, PC, mobile and streaming, who account for 72 billion hours of play. Xbox said those figures exclude much of China and a few other properties. It argued that reaching a large audience and strengthening the business must go together, while calling reliable first- and third-party exclusives and new intellectual property critical to success. The memo’s company-authored framing was blunt: “We won’t succeed by hiding hard truths, nor will we succeed by doing the same thing and expecting different results.”

Xbox still faces a reach-versus-exclusivity trade-off

Making games available to more people can expand their audience, but a platform also needs reasons for players to choose its hardware and services. Sharma acknowledged that tension in comments reported by GameSpot on June 5, 2026: games should reach large audiences, she said, while platforms need exclusive content. Xbox was weighing the issue title by title.

That is evidence of deliberation, not a blanket promise that every Xbox game will become exclusive—or that none will. For players deciding what hardware or service is worthwhile, access to the specific games they want matters as much as the overall size of a platform’s library.

Does the evidence show gamers have been saying this for years?

Sharma’s comments support the narrower claim that Xbox’s CEO now recognizes affordability as a real problem for many players. They do not prove a long-running consensus among gamers. A Windows Central reader poll reported June 24, 2026 found that 151 of 228 participants—66%—said gaming costs were getting out of control. Because this was a self-selected poll of the publication’s readers, it illustrates the views of those participants, not the opinion of gamers generally or a multi-year trend.

How to judge whether gaming is affordable for you

1. Count the full cost of access. Include the hardware you would need, any recurring subscription, and games or add-ons you expect to buy.
2. Check access to your must-play games. Confirm that the titles you care about are available on the platform or plan you are considering; exclusivity and catalogue availability can change.
3. Compare subscription value with your play time. A plan is more useful when you regularly play games included in it. Consider whether it replaces purchases you would otherwise make, rather than counting every available title equally.
